Yeah I was pretty fortunate and saved a lot of money. The only reason it got into the washer was because we found fleas on one of the beds and wanted to make sure our clothes were clean- I had left my iPod in my pocket.

It's something you think will never happen and then it is just one of those moments that you wish never happened. I'm glad it turned out okay for you!

Wow, that's impressive, that is a long time to have a product and not have an problems, really good news.

We've had 5 Macs and 8 iPods in my household the last 5 years with no major issues (that is, no issues we couldn't deal with ourselves, by asking on MR :p).

So I disagree that that's a long time to have a product and not have a problem.

Have had my 32 gig Touch for 9 months, not a single problem.

same except 1st gen, no problems or regrets. just a couple Restores but that's because i Jailbroke it, something i don't regret either. :D

Yeah, I'd like to Jailbreak my iPod so I can customize my iPod, unfortunately I'm too much of a chicken to do it. Too bad Apple won't allow something like this to make things easier!

I had my 1st gen replaced last June after 9 months use due to a flaky battery. It was just behaving weirdly and the Genius said it was the battery. Had it replaced but had to buy a new Invisible Shield.

I have to say, the only thing I wasn't 100% satisfied with my iPod Touch was the battery life. It was usable, but I was charging every day and it just seemed like too much. At least Apple was able to get you taken care of, too bad about the Invisible Shield. BodyGuardz has a thing where they will replace the Bodyguardz, even if it just has to be removed for one reason or another, but by the time you pay for everything it is almost as much to buy a new set.

Me. Once. Plus my iPhone, 3 times

So what kind of problems were you having? Were the problems the same on the iPhone as the iPod Touch?

That's great to hear. I'm actually considering making the switch to Apple soon for my computers, for this very reason. I agree that it isn't a terribly long time to go without problems, what I actually meant to say is that it seems it isn't going to have the problems a lot of other Touch's have. If I had a technology product that only lasted 2 years or so I certainly wouldn't be happy with it, I simply mis-typed what I meant to say.

I've had mine replaced a few times because of dust under the screen for each one. My partner is replacing his because of dust tomorrow, too.
Other than recurring dust they have been working fine. No dead pixels or anything. Just wish they weren't such dust magnets.

Yeah, I've been reading a lot about this problem recently as well. Its too bad something like this is happening to the touch, especially since the screen is the "headliner" of the product. Hopefully the new touch's will work out better for both of you this time around!

3 repairs (2 on a single iPod, one on another) and 2 replacements.

So what kind of repairs have you had done? I've read about alot of the problems with the iPod Touch that require a replacement, but not really seen anything that needed a repair, just curious what kind of problems would require a repair over a replacement.

Actually, I remember reading about Ivan P's ipod touch problems, and they were EPIC...mroogle dust under ipt screen...

But I just wanted to note that after the third return I gave up and got my money back. I just couldn't believe the poor design of the IPT (or perhaps my bad luck? But I doubt that was it) that it would keep allowing dust under the screen. I was seriously fed up.

I think my partner's first ipt was fine, but it is his replacement that is going back for dust.
Anyway, just to point this out incase anyone is not aware: my partner bought his ipt on a CC that has some interesting policies. It automatically extends the warranty of electronics by one year, and if lost within a certain time frame, the CC company will simply buy you a new one (bf lost his). FWIW.

I've had an iPod touch since it was released in 2007, with one replacement due to a faulty home button. Rather than repair it, they replaced it with a refurbished one. The battery on the replacement is terrible, but I didn't try to get it replaced again.

Light leaks, dust, malfunctioning home buttons, damage inflicted by Apple's techs...

This covers most of it:

Start of the dust problem:

They're about the 2G that I had 'serviced' and 'replaced'; the replacement unit was in almost just as bad a condition as the one I sent in. Before I got the 2G I had a 1st gen that constantly froze and that, too, needed replacing...as did my 5.5G iPod from several years back. I seem to have no luck with iPods...

I've heard of the dust under screen problems, but didn't think it was quite this wide-spread. I had problems with dead pixels on my PSP, after 3 exchanges I was ready to give up, fortunately the last one finally worked. I was trying to decide if I would get the extended warranty on the iPod, but if something like this is that common, it may be something I get. Thanks for sharing the info!

That is one thing I don't like about them exchanging iPods, I've heard that they may give you a refurbished one. I don't think that they should replace an iPod that was bought new with a refurbished one. You pay the additional money upfront to get a new one, so I don't see why they can replace it with one that has been used. This is one thing that certainly has me questioning if I want to get an iPod again or not. I'm going to be closer to an Apple store, so that has me a little more comfortable than before, but I really don't want my iPod being replaced with a used one if it has a problem. I personally, think it should be an even exchange, buy new, it gets replaced with a new one, buy used, it gets replaced with a used one, but maybe I'm crazy

Now I think I remember reading some of those posts... if you have such bad luck with iPods, what keeps you coming back? Do you like the product that much, service, etc.? I don't think most people would put up with that many problems, so I was just curious what makes you continue to use iPods.

I've had my first gen iPod Touch since May last year, no problems.

Great to hear!

Was it replaced as a result of a problem with the iPod?

it just kept freezing and crashing so i think it was software

I see, I only had my iPod Touch for about a month, but I didn't seem to have an software issues, so I guess I was lucky.

Valid question. Very valid question.

The main reason is more of a comfort thing; I like Apple, I'm used to iTunes, I own a Mac...with an iPod it means that everything is integrated with Apple's machines/software, so it's designed to work properly. Other players may only be Windows compatible, and rely on crappy freeware or Windows Media Player...both of which I don't want to use.

The design of the iPods themselves are rather nice, and the interface is intuitive and easy to use. The iPod touch is the most beautiful hand-held device I have ever owned, but that doesn't mean it's without it's problems. The hardware itself is somewhat solid; the faults themselves aren't something that may necessarily cause a problem (for example, light leaks), but the problem lies in the fact that said problem can affect something different altogether - for example, allowing dust to enter the device. Also with something as 'gorgeous' looking and as expensive as the iPod touch, seeing light coming out of somewhere where you know it shouldn't be makes you feel a bit ripped off - it just looks ugly.

My LG cell phone is total crap. It's prepaid (or, as called overseas, 'pay as you go'), cost $120, covered in scratches when I've tried to look after it as carefully as possible, crashes regularly - but yet it doesn't bother me in comparison with the flaws I've suffered with my iPod, because, while LG is synonymous with somewhat favourable products, it isn't exactly to the same extent as Apple...they also don't exactly charge the premium like the infamous 'Apple tax'. So basically, what I'm saying, is yes, for the $420 I paid for my old, screwed up 16GB iPod touch I'd expect a little better in regards to the overall build quality and it's integrity over years of use. On the other hand, the alternatives are nowhere near as reliable or user-friendly as the iPod...at least not to me. It's just a shame that they don't try and step up their quality control and the integrity of their technicians - maybe they should have treated my iPod the same way they'd want theirs to be treated.

I'm just glad my 32GB touch hasn't screwed up on me yet.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, I must say, this is one of the best things I've heard all day. I'm wanting to make the switch to Apple, I plan to get a Mac as soon as I move (literally, I'm wanting to go the same day I get there :D ), which will be May. I really want to make the switch and I'm excited to, but at the same time I'm a little nervous about what I've been reading as I try to do more research into the products. I've always thought that you pay a premium for Apple and get great products, but as I always suspected they too have their problems, it just seems as if Apple is a little easier to deal with.

I had the iPod Touch for about a month after it was released, but had some problems and returned it and I'm just now getting around to getting a new one :-( I loved the product, it worked great, and even using it on a PC things worked really well. I really, really liked using it and I look forward to getting it back, but I totally know what you mean about imperfections with the iPod being a little different than other products. The iPod Touch is nearly a work of art and something you just want to look at, when it has a problem it is really hard to handle, and especially when you pay a premium.

I had a Mac back in highschool, it had its problems, but I think there were reasons for them. Since then I've not had an Apple product except for the iPod Touch. Despite the problems it had, it is really what made me want to make the switch. I've been wanting to make the switch for some time, but just was never convinced it would be worth the price. After using the iPod Touch I could tell there was a difference compared to other products out there. So, in just over a months time I should be a very, very happy Mac owner, and I'm really excited to give it a try, hopefully I too will be hooked!

Thanks again for sharing, much appreciated!

I was one of the first people to order the first generation iPod touch. When it arrived, it was in perfect condition and it's still chugging along just fine to this day. Never replaced it.

This was around the same time a lot of users were complaining about negative blacks, but after the first couple of weeks of production, that problem was gone. Thankfully mine was a week 38 and the blacks were nice.

I'm always a little hesitant to buy new products when they first come out because of problems with the first ones that come out. Glad to hear you had good luck and that everything is working well!

I cannot say the same thing about the iPhone 3G though. I've been through 3 of those and I'm on my 4th.

Well that definitely stinks! It is amazing how different the quality in one product can be compared to another, especially when both are quite similar. Hopefully the fourth time will be a charm ;) !

ok, i just got the Ipod touch 2 weeks ago and its was going fine until 2 days ago when in the screen appeared some messed up pixels after thati went to bed and it got worse, then that whole day it stayed the way it was, i went to bed, woke up and its worse. i got it on craigslist however, it was bought in november, and was parent owned, i dont know what is causeing the problem but is there anytrhing i can do about it?

how bad was the dust problem?
i have one speck of dust under my ipod touch screen which is a bit annoying, but it obviously isn't enough to get it replaced.
how bad does it have to be before apple will replace it?

I have had no problems, whatsoever, with my 16gb 1st Gen iPod Touch. I've had it a year and a half. :) No screen problems, no battery problems, no dust problems, no freezing problems.

Then again, my iPod Photo, which is several years old now, still works wonderfully. It still has decent battery life and works perfectly.
