It’s been nearly 2 years since the M1 Macs were first released, and now we are on the M2 and only the Mac Pros (and possibly the high-end Mac Mini) are left to be updated. Most of the threads here could easily be posted in the “regular” Mac forums. Should the moderators consider changing the focus of this forum? Perhaps to discussion about future M-series chips, rather than Apple Silicon Macs in general?

I asked this question 10 months ago.

I come here when I want to read about issues or comparisons about AS. I go to the individual products forums to discuss those. There is sometimes some bleed between the forums. AS is still new enough and there are still people reporting problems that I could see it either way.

This is a good location for general discussions about AS and the AS family of chips. Specific machine discussions can go into the Mac subsections.

If this section were gone, where would a topic like “information about upcoming M2 chips” go? In the MacBook Air forum? The MacBook Pro forum? The Macbook forum? The iMac forum? Etc.

I just posted about Arm suing Qualcomm today. I could have posted in the industry forum but does anyone read that one? I like having this forum. It’s useful until Arm is mainstream for more than just Apple.

Until Intel Macs are deprecated completely I think it is but I think it needs to be switched. Intel Macs should be the sub forum and Apple Silicon Macs should be the main focus.

However I still think they need to be titled respectively as Apple Silicon Macs and Intel Macs until the Intel Macs are no longer officially supported.

Otherwise I suspect it would be a confusing mess.

Why not? We still have a PowerPC Macs forum and they have been discontinued for a while now. Intel Macs didn't just become useless now that we have Apple Silicon

I think that the question was if we need a forum specifically about Apple Silicon. The forum is currently about both the chip technology and about the Macs using that tech. As the transition progresses I can see discussions about MBA with M2 moving to the Mac: Air forum and discussions about Mac Studios moving to The Mac: Mac Studio forum. Other discussions about Intel Macs could move to a dedicated folder like the PowerPC folder. In that scenario, all of the discussions about specific Mac computers would be in forums dedicated to each model. But there is still are a lot of discussions about the overall Apple Silicon technology regardless of specific computer models and I think there is value to having those discussions in their own forum.
