Check out Modmyifone.com's "thanks" system. When a user makes a particularly helpful comment, he gets a thanks. As far as I can tell, this is not negative in any way and rewards helpful users. Then, when you ask a question, you may be more likely to take the advice of someone with 500+ thanks, rather than someone with none.

Yes, that's another implementation of the system that works.

By the way, those who do CLAIMED that they do not care about voting are voting? What irony...

Another two examples where the rep/positive-negative system works are mobileread.com and brighthand.com

Though in both places it's a case of significantly smaller communities.

I really agree that this could make sense in support forums, where there is a lot of (often conflicting) information thrown around. Someone who is consistently on point and gives good tech advice would gain credibility. Though I suppose if there were heavy demand for something like that it might be easier to create a special "tech support guru" category of member or something along those lines...so the people who are experts can be identified as such in posts.

Sorry, now i'm rambling.

Interesting idea, I think it would be cool to apply to be a "guru" with the mods. Then, they would look over your posts and see how helpful you are. I think people with the "guru" title would become more credible sources of useful information.

Exactly! Someone who comes through and consistently gives good advice to people switching from Mac-->PC...or someone who understands cell phone tech support...or someone who is good at helping with web design issues, etc.

We all voluntarily post on the forums, and I know there are a lot of very talented people who post and give advice. If they were ok with being singled out, it seems like that would cover some of the sentiment in this thread for people in favor of a ratings system; it basically identifies the people who know their **** from the people who don't. And it does it in a way that the mods can control better.

Except of course when someone is thanked for nothing and the entire thing becomes one huge charade of people in a given circle thanking each other endlessly (any innuendo in that sentence is simply coincidental :p).

Actually, the people who have voted in the poll and posted responses to your thread do care about the topic, they just happen to disagree with you.

Hardly ironic when the terms have been correctly laid out.

the suggestion sounds like someone wants to begin excluding: opinions, comments, "newbies" whatever.....my guess is that there are persons who are genuinely asking for help on a matter, and those offering help whether it is a technical one or political (to go from one extreme to the other); my guess is also that there are those who represent more than just themselves who come to MR, these persons may be looking to see how others view who they represent; and those who are looking to cut off how others view something...such as the many times i have heard it said Apple will cut you off, erase your comment etc.
i'd rather not see this MR turn into a fahrenheit 451....
