Mine sits on the corner of my entertainment center in the living room, the power adapter is plugged into the UPS my A/V stuff is connected to.

If people could see in (blinds and curtains prevent that) it would be in the second bedroom which is my "computer" room.

Oops, not a Retina but still a MBP.

I burned up a motherboard in Iraq because of the dust so, to me at least, this thread makes perfect sense.
The replacement I bought didn't make it a year after I returned, presumable because of the dust it collected over there.
They were't Macs but the one i'll be taking this time is.
I'm heading back soon and have actually been thinking about how to prevent it from happening again.

Are you in the military? Dust and Sand are two different things. I'm sure they make laptops built for those kinds of conditions (Panasonic Toughbooks come to mind).

Tell me about it. Every day I see redundant or face palming posts.

Sits on my DR table, getting rid of iMac that was there. Now me and my wife can see each other. That's good--right? ;)

Depends where I last use my MBP. But most of the time, I put it on the desk. When I use MBP on bed before I sleep, I slide it under the bed.

I`d just get a cheap Core M Notebook/Convertible, keeping the dust out in the desert is near impossible. Anything with a fan will just makes matters worse.

My Mac`s survived 3 years in Qatar, equally I had to replace the fans, and I did my level best to control the environment. If you take the right tool you can always open the bottom plate and blow out the dust with compressed air every couple of months as that will help a lot to stop the dust accumulating.
