My son has been constantly borrowing my iPad Pro 10.5 because his old iPad couldn't properly run some apps. So, as of today I'm transferring the iPad Pro to him and I'm am officially iPad-less. :( Well, not quite, I'll probably use his old iPad Air 2 temporarily. It's still functioning relatively OK considering it's almost a decade old. (!)

Come on Apple, let's go OLED! I'm thinking it will appear in the summer of 2024, either late Q2 (my guess) or early Q3. Even better is if it's eligible for the 2024 Back-To-School promotion.

If the next iPad Pro doesn't go OLED, I might be inclined to just go with an iPad Air, or even just a base iPad, since I don't actually "need" OLED. I just want OLED, and I don't need that kind of performance. My main desktop is "only" an M1, and it's more than fine for me performance-wise.

The issue with the iPad Air though is that the entry level only comes with 64 GB which is the same as the regular iPad. The iPad Pro OLED will be a lot more expensive, but it will come with at least 128 GB, which is the sweet spot for me. And who knows, maybe Apple would even throw us a bone and launch it at 256 GB (unlikely for 2024 I think). Actually, for the US$100 / CA$130, I'd consider upgrading from the 128 GB to the 256 GB iPad Pro, but I probably wouldn't pay US$150 / CA$200 to go from the base 64 GB iPad to the 256 GB iPad.

The RAM and SSD upgrade prices, as well all know, really seem a bit unexplainable. I will admit I went too crazy with upgrades on my M1 iPad Pro 12.9”. But I was convinced that the near future iOS was going to really going to need the upgrades. It will be interesting to see what the price of the next generation iPad will be even with only modest RAM and SSD upgrades.

Since 2017, OLED iPad has been a rumor.

Would not be surprised if it remains a rumor beyond 2027.

It is more likely a 2024 iMac 32" 6K M4 3nm will come out at ~$2k using a newer 32" 6K panel tech that has parts selling for ~$500 than an OLED iPad.

Hmm. Let’s agree to disagree. I think there is a >75% chance of an iPad Pro OLED in 2024, and a <10% chance of a 32” iMac in 2024. And there’s even less of a chance of such a 32” iMac beast being ~US$2000.

I expect a redesign of the iPad by 2027 to accommodate EU laws on replaceable batteries.

I am replacing my 2018 iPad Pro 11" 7nm for a 2027 iPad Pro 1.4nm that has a replaceable battery.

I went wild with my 12.9 M2. I got the 1tb for the 16GB ram to make sure it will last me for as many years as possible. I’m a little uneasy about the excessiveness of it haha so I’ve been trying to increase my usage a bit. So far I am learning LumaFusion and I want to start playing Genshin but I’m afraid I’ll get sucked in to it and neglect other aspects of my life 😂

I got this iPad last month because I wanted the new toy and didn’t feel like waiting for oled or the probable price increase it will carry. I’m sure I’ll have fomo when oled comes but I am SO happy with my current iPad and it was such a financial hit that I won’t be able to justify an upgrade before this one becomes unsupported. Got myself some AppleCare+ and I’m in for the long haul :)

I ran LumaFusion on my iPad Pro 10.5", and it actually ran fine for 1080p, and was even OK for basic 4K, despite the fact that thing only has A10X and 4 GB RAM. I think I'd be happy with 8 GB RAM for many years on a lightly used iPad Pro, as my usage is usually more consumption than content creation. As for storage, I have a 2 TB iCloud account, so I don't really need huge amounts of storage locally on the iPad Pro.

In the meantime I just reset my son's iPad Air 2 for use until the OLED iPad Pro comes out. That thing is sloooowwww with A8X and 2 GB RAM. However, back in the day it was a vast jump from the prior models with half the RAM or less and dual-core CPU. That was one I waited for too. I refused to buy the original iPad Air because of its 1 GB RAM. Back then it was a RAM increase I was waiting for (and I got a pleasant surprise with a triple-core CPU as well), while these days my wait is for OLED.

march 2024 is my guess.
So Q1 then. You're an optimist, but I hope you're right.

Current pricing:

11" 128 GB: US$799 / CA$1099 / 1069€
11" 256 GB: US$899 / CA$1229 / 1199€
11" 512 GB: US$1099 / CA$1499 / 1449€
11" 1.0 TB: US$1499 / CA$2039 / 1949€
11" 2.0 TB: US$1899 / CA$2579 / 2449€

12.9" 128 GB: US$1099 / CA$1499 / 1469€
12.9" 256 GB: US$1199 / CA$1629 / 1599€
12.9" 512 GB: US$1399 / CA$1899 / 1849€
12.9" 1.0 TB: US$1799 / CA$2439 / 2349€
12.9" 2.0 TB: US$2199 / CA$2979 / 2849€

I could see an OLED price structure something like this:

11.1" 256 GB: US$899 / CA$1229 / 1199€
11.1" 512 GB: US$1099 / CA$1499 / 1449€
11.1" 1.0 TB: US$1499 / CA$2039 / 1949€
11.1" 2.0 TB: US$1899 / CA$2579 / 2449€

13.1" 256 GB: US$1199 / CA$1629 / 1599€
13.1" 512 GB: US$1399 / CA$1899 / 1849€
13.1" 1.0 TB: US$1799 / CA$2439 / 2349€
13.1" 2.0 TB: US$2199 / CA$2979 / 2849€

In other words, I could see them keeping the price of the 256 GB model the same, but they could delete the 128 GB model at the same time, effectively increasing the base price of the iPad Pros to US$899 and US$1199. Or maybe they'd increase pricing by US$100 all around, to US$999 and US$1299 respectively for the base models, but I'm not really expecting that. The iPad Air would get pushed to 128 GB for the base model, indirectly replacing the 128 GB iPad Pro. Not sure if they'd introduce a 4 TB model iPad Pro though.

Also, the change in screen sizing as well as the change to a landscape oriented camera would necessitate a new Magic Keyboard, incompatible with older models.

Are you sure we're talking about Apple? There's no way they will just erase the 128GB version and charge the same for an OLED upgrade. They will try to wring as much money out of this new iPad Pro line up as possible.
The rumors mentioned +$700/+$800 for an OLED iPad Pro, which is kind of bonkers so I guess a more reasonable price increase will happen.

I won't go into nitpicking about storage, but the core line up going into 2024 is this:

$329 iPad 9th (very likely killed)
$449 iPad 10th (very likely price reduction + spec bump)
$499 iPad Mini (spec bump)
$599 iPad Air (spec bump)
$799 iPad Pro 11" (redesign w OLED)
$1099 iPad Pro 12.9" (redesign w OLED)

Key to the new line up will be the bigger iPad Air. I think they'll sell it as a "more affordable" 12.9" iPad Pro alternative. It will be priced accordingly, matching the price of the 11" iPad Pro and the iPad Pro will get a price bump.
I think something like this will be very likely:

$349-379 iPad 10th
$449 iPad 11th
$499 iPad mini spec bump
$599 iPad Air
$799 iPad Air 12.9"
$1099 iPad Pro 11" OLED
$1399 iPad Pro 12.9" OLED

Personally, I don't think they will sell many Pros, but I think they haven't sold many of them to this point. They know that iPad Pro users are die hard users who will pay for OLED. And if the new iPad Pros are too expensive for you, that's where the new and bigger iPad Air will come into play. Maybe they are also supply constrained due to their quality requirements so they can't move as many OLED iPads as they want so a lower price would hurt them.

Apple dropped the 128 GB model and started with the 256 GB capacity for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, charging the same amount as the 256 GB iPhone 14 Pro Max.

However, like I said, Apple could also increase the price another $100, but I’m not expecting that.

BTW, I’m totally discounting the price prediction from The Elec, because as you suggested, it’s ridiculous.

Yes, the Elec woud almost double the starting iPad Pro price. Not a good look for Apple.

I would argue that the move with the 15 Pro Max isn't comparable with the new iPads.
The 15 Pro Max isn't really that new, as it shares the same camera sensors and the same display with the 14 Pro Max. Sprinkle in one tetra prism ($5), USB-C (basically <$1), a few grams of titanium ($30), and you get the 15 Pro Max. At the scale Apple buys their NAND storage I would assume that the move 128 GB > 256 GB is essentially free for them (and 256GB conveniently makes these hideous camera limiting features unworthy of a "Pro" phone go away).

When Apple changed the 12.9" to MiniLED they added $100. I just don't see how they eat their margins with an OLED panel when they have the perfect opportunity to raise the prices by introducing the 12.9" Air exactly in the spot where the 11" was, hence moving it upwards. The panel will be very expensive. Look how it took them 3 years to move the consumer iPhone from LCD to OLED (X to 12) and how they raised the price from $769 (7 Plus, LCD) to $999 (X, OLED) for the first OLED iPhone. Granted, this was a statement phone, but at the time it was rumored that Apple pays ~$120 for an OLED screen compared to ~$45 for a LCD screen. That's more than 2x the price for a way smaller screen. Maybe they stay at 128 GB and just add $200, but I can't see a $899 11" iPad Pro with 256GB and OLED, as much as I would love to.

Addressing the posters concerns and actions taken that you replied to, I too went crazy and got a spec’d out 12.9, 2TB cell model hoping for iPadOS to really mature in near future… but alas, the maturation was meh, at best but I still love the storage space and the added ram for recent AAA gaming at least.

“In the meantime I just reset my son's iPad Air 2 for use until the OLED iPad Pro comes out. That thing is sloooowwww with A8X and 2 GB RAM. “
Which OS is it using? That matters. I still have my original iPad 2 (2011) on iOS 6, and my iPad Air (2013) on iOS 8.4, so they’re not slow per se. But going like 3 versions of the OS and above on the older hardware severely hampers their performance.

I gave away my iPad 2 eons ago. As for the iPad Air 2, it’s running iPadOS 15.8 (which is the latest, from just 2 months ago). Yes, that will slow it down significantly but I don’t like running OSes that are too much older, for compatibility reasons and feature set. iOS 8.4 is just far too old for me… not that I could downgrade anyway.

But even back 4-5 years ago I had started to notice real slowdowns with the iPad Air 2 (A8X, 2 GB RAM), which is why I upgraded to a refurb iPad Pro 10.5” (A10X, 4 GB RAM) back in 2019.

Agreed. That’s why I just upgrade and avoid those Apple planned obsolescence schemes. 😎

You can already go and purchase on sale for $599 an 11” Tab S9 which has a next gen Samsung 120hz OLED panel today. Tim Cook is likely gonna source the same panel from Samsung heck I’m sure the order is in.

So Q1 then. You're an optimist, but I hope you're right.
Just based on rumors and likely timeframes really. Guess it’s possible they could push it back.

my guess we will see 12.9 air in march too
