To everyone trashing Retina--

I'm betting you haven't used it much. I have the rMBP 15" and the screen makes every other screen I've tried to use as a supplement (5 displays including a Dell, an HP, a Viewsonic, and the Apple Cinema 20" (alum) and 24") look awful. Screen door out the wazoo. I'm using the 24" Cinema right now at 1920 and it's screen-doored to death. Seriously thinking of selling it.

I had the 27 inch iMac and the rez was MUCH better than this, with MUCH less screen door.

This 24" cinema display is pretty but the image quality is not good. When I set it in "best for Retina) it's better, but still s-d (and way too big to be useful, since you get no additional real estate).

But it probably lags when your scrolling down a web page with all the power going into running that display. It's just hype.

If there will be a retina 27" display from Apple, I wouldn't buy the iMac. I would get Retina Thunderbolt Display and pair it with ultimate gaming box. And maybe I will get an MBA just to enjoy a little bit of OSX.

Buying retina iMac is a suicide plan. The mobility GPU simply won't cut it unless you play games on lower resolution or jerk around the desktop, which insanely ridiculous.

Paying $2000++ for mediocre graphic machine? No thanks.

Nobody is stating the obvious reason why higher resolution displays are going to be awesome.

Think about what made VHS popular....

There is no video material even at the current 27" 2560 x 1440 resolution. And too much detail is not always what you want.

I want but on MBP there`s a lot of problems... first fix them and then I want only retina :D

There are many fewer problems than you would be lead to believe by the forum, basically the computer is as close to perfect as any other mac i have owned/used.

I don't care until it becomes a standard that games support and iMac GPUs can drive it for gaming purposes with good performance. In other words, maybe in a few years when I get my next iMac this could be cool. We'll see.

I wouldn't want it. I rather see Apple implement improvements elsewhere. I had a chance to see the retina macbook pro at the apple store, and the improvements aren't as apparent as initial impressions and the hype from Apple made them seen. At best, you see some crisper looking text-- especially on safari browsing, but that's about the extent of it. Now figure that your eyes will be even further away from the screen on an iMac, and you'll barely see any difference at all.

Retina on a desktop like an iMac is more like a company comparing weewee sizes amongst other companies, much like the megapixel race on cameras.

To everyone not trashing retina

I've been playing with rMBP both from Apple Store and in one of my acquaintance's

No doubt, Retina is nice to look at. Well .. it better be for a $2200++ laptop. Text looks crispier, almost like an iPhone or current iPad.

But I can definitely tell, the GPU is struggling to render things. Apple pushed the limit a bit too far with a puny 650M. Scrolling is not as enjoyable as it should, screen animation noticeably less sleek too. And it's on the OSX desktop, let alone 3d gaming.

As TMRaven said, basically you paid premium for having a paper-like text in Safari. Totally sure it wasn't snappier. It's 2012 and I don't think notebook hardwares are ready yet for that kind of resolution. Well it could be, but definitely not in a thin form factor as current rMBP.

So really, why would anyone buy a Retina iMac is beyond me? Using a limited mGPU, you sure you want that? Why not getting the 27" Retina display instead and pair it with powerful machine with dual GTX680 or its next gen equivalents? That would be .. well, appropriate.

There's plenty. I can go shoot some for you now. I will have to downres it for you though because my cameras can shoot higher.

Looking at my 27" iMac now, I vote no. Put improvements elsewhere; this screen is fantastic. Maybe it could look better, but not without sufficient hardware to drive a "Retina" resolution. And I would never trade a higher resolution screen for performance.

I'd rather have the screen now with 120hz added instead of gpu killing higher resolution. For day to day the incredible smoothness that 120hz gives over 60hz is what I would rather have. The smoothness is instantly noticeable too for potential customers browsing Apple product in the store.

I would like a retina display but my imac is still 2 years so i hope they take their time on releasing one, as there is not enough supported software or websites which makes the display seem useless at this point, otherwise using a retina macbook pro for uni and an iPad 3 every night the screen seems better for eyes less strain therefore it would be interesting how an iMac retina would fair out as i do a lot of word-processing and reading pdf files on my 27 inch display.
