I plan to get my first Mac, a MBP here in a month or two. I was set on getting the 17" ($200 for 2" seems worth it) but after going to the Apple Store and playing with them both, the 15" isn't that bad.

I'm not a gamer, I'm a developer so I'd like the extra screen space for plenty of open windows, that's about my only argument for the 17". I don't really plan to travel with it often, other than from the home office to the living room. I'm sure at some point I'll get an external so the 15" may suffice--using that extra $200 to help with the Time Capsule.

I have an early uMBP 15" which I am happy with for the most part but I am planning to buy a 17" soon. Mainly for the hi-res screen. The 17" is only 1lb heavier so that's not a huge deal for me, I basically use my computer at work & home (with ext monitor) commuting via car so it's not like I'm walking around with it much.

I think you will like the 17 screen over the 15 and the weight between the 17 and 15 are not that much different. its when you start comparing a 13 that size and weight matter.

17 is about right!

So I purchased the 15" uMBP in October 2008. I got to feeling that the screen was just too small (after seeing the 17" uMBP). So I upgraded and life is good or at least better with more screen and higher resolution.
