Given what you know today, the negative publicity, the "controlling ways" of Apple, not being able to unlock and swap sims, etc.
Would you still buy an iPhone today?

Is this a serious question? "Controlling ways of apple?" Don't make me laugh.

I bought an iphone because I wanted apple's superior design and technology. Whether or not I add 3rd party apps is of very little consequence.

Glad it fires you up. That is a quote repeated many times on these posts.
For some, I guess it is serious. Just passing on the info and asking for a vote so we can see what the facts are, not the rumors.

Well, so far this afternoon, with about 300 members online, over 100 voted. Around 30% participation.
Better than the general election??
Most of the leads to this poll were in threads with very heated exchanges regarding the current split in the iPhone community.
So far if this was a sports event they would call it a drubbing or massacre.
If it was an election it would be an unprecedented landslide.
Anyone from the losing side want to vote and help your cause?
Can't tell which is the losing side without voting?
Then vote.

Of course I would buy it again, I could tell that when I took it out of the box and turned it on. I had bought it because i knew I would love the big video screen, which I do. And, I was intrigued by the virtual "buttons" and the implications that holds for enhancements (which btw i do look forward to but I'll take mine as Apple gets around to vetting them, thank you).

Once I had it in hand and started using it, I realized that for the first time I will bother with sync of a calendar. I reach for it now when someone says how about lunch on Tuesday... I used to reach for a pen and scrap of paper.

I love how the software has learned what I mean by what i (almost) type and I love sliding from letters to punctuation.

I didn't think I would bother with mail but I actually use it more than I'd expected.

I live in the notes but I want sync of them so I often just put them in mails instead.

So cool, the WiFi access. It was the selling point for me in this freaking dead zone I live in. At least I have DSL so with the WiFi connection I can use the thing for more than just iTunes sync. I thought the iTunes candybar phone was cute and still use it as a phone but its iPod value to me was and remains kinda marginal. The iPhone is a many-light-years leap forward, I am so happy with it.

I was totally psyched to see all the intuitive functioning of the music handling on the iPhone. I love being able to flip back and forth between a playlist and coverflow, and turning an album over to pick another track from what's currently playing off a list. I like being able to tap the face and bring up the software buttons for skip-forward, scrub, etc. It surpassed all my expectations of how clickwheel functions would be handled in a virtual mode.

It's also my fave iPod now except when it comes to choosing what to stuff onto it from a huge library whenever I re-sync. But having to make those choices is a good discipline and helps me know more about where I'm at, mentally and emotionally, on a given day.

I hate to break it to you and bust your bubble, but we DID know what we "know now" when the iPhone came out.

Good point. I 'know now what I knew then' because I uh.....did some RESEARCH before plunking down $600 on a friggin' phone!!

I knew what it did, what it didn't do, and what i would accept in the form of HOPING what it would do in the future.

I love the damn thing. I feel naked without it! (of course, I feel naked without clothes, but that's a different story:p)

Absolutely.

I didn't buy it with the expectation the general community would be able to update and extend it so much. I bought it because I wanted a phone, a PDA and an iPod all in one device instead of having to haul three around.

Same here. It does everything I need - all in one small device. I'm more than pleased with my iPhone.

I would not, not because of the unlocking thing, or the third party app thing. Because the ringtones on the iPhone suck so so so so bad, and now I can not have my own on there anymore. And no I do not want a stupid song.

You would not buy the phone simply because it doesn't have "good enough ringtones"? Seriously?

In fact, I did!

I bought a second one for my wife as soon as Apple gave me my $100 credit for the first one.

Much like a 1.1.1 iPhone, this survey limits our choices.

I *did* my research, and when I bought my iPhone, it could do Instant Messaging.

I *am* happy with my 1.0.2 iPhone, but I would *not* buy a 1.1.1 iPhone.

I might buy a 1.2 or 2.x iPhone, if it has iChat.

It amazes me that this "Breakthrough Internet Communications Device" doesn't do native instant messaging, something free phones have had for years. And yet 3rd parties, without documentation or an SDK wrote IM apps in a couple of weeks.

So put up a survey of a 1.0.2 iPhone, vs. a 1.1.1 iPhone, vs "No iPhone at this time".

I should stick my iPhone up Jobs' patooter...

...metaphorically speaking of course.

I am a little perturbed about the ringtone debacle. I refuse to be nickel and dimed. I refuse to EVER pay for a ringtone I already have. Before we know it, we aren't going to be able to set our own pictures as backgrounds either. We'll have to pay $1.99 to crop/resize one of our own photos in Aperture (or iPhoto if that is your thing) in order to use it.

I don't think I will be buying another iPhone after my contract is over. Not with all the hassle it has been. The interface is cool and REALLY great to use but with the little headaches from all of this user hassling (over some pretty trivial details), the 2 year contract extension, constant freezing while checking email and while trying to unlock (not to mention it always tells me my email password is incorrect), and the $200 price drop that happened right after initial release, it is just too much to worry about. IT IS JUST A PHONE. I shouldn't have to deal with these issues on my phone. The product support is ridiculous with this "lockdown" mentality Apple are adopting. Frankly, it is starting to scare me away.

I have a feeling it is just going to continue to get worse unless we do something about it.

I have to say, I am very proud and thankful to all those who created the uproar about the $200 price drop. Don't let these companies push us around. We're the ones PAYING for their goods/services, the customer is always right.

thats a poll I would like to see, if people would rather have the phone locked down or open
