Poor Palm

I think putting the next webOS phone on hold is a HUGE mistake for Palm. They have a great OS that they need to incorporate into as many projects as possible, theyre not in good financial shape right now. The pre hardware wise is just meh at best (the quality is sub par). I feel like it was a test for webOS now they just need to put it on to some knockout hardware and they'll have a great product.

indeed, i edited my original post just a minutes ago.

about your above post, its not that clear a decision, putting more webOS phone on the market may well cannibalize the Pre and hurt palm. Im sure they did some research and came to a conclusion.

The pre is what was needed to save the sinking pre ship, they've been hemorrhaging money for a while now. Thats why it was so important for this to be a success.

I guess we'll see. Can Rubenstien (formerly of the Apple camp) turn things around in a Jobs-esque way?

The Pre is obviously still in it's infancy and both Pre and Palm are in the 'prove it' phase where they have to prove they can make a viable product again. If they start releasing a whole bunch of v1.0 phones onto the market I think that will be detrimental to their goal. I also don't think they want to release another WebOS phone before the Pre gets released on Verizon next year. I think the Pre on Verizon will be a very solid version of the phone. They'll be a number of software updates between now and then, more apps in the app store, and they might even be able to improve the build quality by refining their manufacturing process.

Like Walt Mossberg said: palm is running on fumes. They've put all their effort/resources into making a new platform they hope will take advantage of the market created by the 'new smartphones for everybody' (lead by apple). They don't have much money to lower prices or come up with many models of webOS phones. They must be struggling now to come up with a good SDK and maybe improve webOS. I don't think they have much money left, that's why pre sales are so important. The Pre is fantastic phone. It will sell well but come on, it will never sell like the iphone. Palm tryed to make a phone that has everything the iphone 3g has plus all the things the users used to complain it didn't have. Palm hoped this would get a lot media attention and of course, sales. The problem is, 1: apple is not sitting still and just released iphone 3G S which most people would rather have over the Pre (engadget polls). 2- Old iphone 3g is just 99 bucks now, half the price of the pre. 3- Palm is not as big as apple so in terms of software development/partnership they will stay behind. You may criticize iphone's limited multi-tasking or closed enviroment but that made app development easier and combined with a powerful SDK and powerful OS, you have today a huge platform while still new in the market. Palm with its limited resources, less control and web-code only won't be able to match apple in mobile development.
The Pre is still a very very good phone but the old sayings that it would 'kill' or even match the iphone are all too much.
 
Eh - My GF has the Pre. I've blogged about my experiences with it (check my sig). It's not an awful failure. It's a pretty good device with a few hardware flaws and a few software flaws. Hopefully they can fix up the software soon!

Palm has 1/26 of expense of apple, what do you think their income should be to cover it?

Why don't you cite the numbers from Palm or Sprint themselves, Sprint released a statement saying that this is their top selling device ever but never released numbers. I wonder why. They also released the same statement about the Samsung Instinct but with no numbers.

My sources dont come from the internet, the internet is as reliable as a car with no wheels. My friend's dad is a cellphone company investigator for the High Court. Where's you're so called sources? Your blatant statements hmm? There's a word for that.

He got a Pre himself to use on Telecom's dying CDMA network. They only made a limited number of Pre's according to him. He said he couldn't say why because of his NDA (Just like I have an ADC NDA and can't talk about iPhone 3.0 or Snow Leopard). But fake selling out is used quite regularly to increase false demand, which seems highly likely to boost Palm Pre pre-order sales. Anyway if you want proof you can always get the media hype by doing a google search!!! Douche 😡

But damn, not coming on Verison until next year!? That sucks big time. It's not either GSM or New Zealand. 🙁 3GS for me then.

If this is just going to become a (Insert thing here) waving argument with Clevin. Then I'm closing the thread.
 
Palm will be broke by the end of the year. It has been years in the making they have been far too slow to adapt and they are probably the least dynamic company I have ever seen. All they do is rethink their marketing to get people to buy ****. They never rethink their products inorder to release something similarly ground breaking to what they were releasing 12 years ago.

Palm only made 1.3 mil last year? That is pathetic.
