I'm interested, but $29 for a year old game that's kind of a curiosity...?

Steam isn't perfect but it has a lot of interesting finds and deals. It has community, depth, and incentive for developers to cater to the community.

Mac App Store... feels like they strong armed a couple of devs to making a Mac release. No discounts, no community, no vibe. Apple's gotta do better here.
App Store games can have discounts; for example, Resident Evil Village launched with the same discounts as it did through the other channels. Stray not being discounted similarly to Steam is 100% about the developers, not Apple.

Of course, porting the game to MacOS required additional effort so they have to recoup that investment. If Apple's new game porting toolkit really makes it low-effort then offering Mac versions wont really require a big financial commitment.

Is it a great game? No. Did the developer take a chance and have a successful game? Yes. I liked it. You can create good games without the AAA budgets.

I enjoyed the game and I certainly don’t begrudge any Mac user for wanting to play it natively.

But this announcement just reminds me of why I don’t game on Mac. I played this game over a year ago on PC. It’s single player so not as critical, but I still remember waiting 1-2 years for popular multiplayer games to be available on Mac, by which time friends had moved on to newer games.

One of my favorite games in recent years. Only caveat is that it just leaves you wanting more.
  • Awesome cyberpunk environments, really well done and atmospheric
  • Outstanding music that I actually played for a while outside of the game
  • Gameplay reminiscent of old Half-Life 2, where you're trying to figure out how to progress via platforming or finding items or an order to doing something
Game also has a few easter eggs / nods to HL2 so you can definitely tell they're fans of that series as well.

It's a cute and fun puzzler type game. With an intriguing story. The characters you meet along the way are entertaining. The game requires you to think only a little but it does require you to have a decent memory.

Minimum specs - 16GB of RAM, except on Mac, where by a miracle 8GB is equivalent. Maybe the game just has a subroutine that downloads an extra 8GB of memory.
Windows uses a lot of fat runtimes when applications are loaded very bloated and inefficient. Look at add and remove programs and see how many runtime libraries are installed.

Our 10-year-old adores it on Xbox, and I started playing based on her enthusiasm. It feels, to me, almost like a cat-centric Hogwarts Legacy: not the greatest game on earth, but definitely has its moments and fun. Totally agree with your sentiment. That said, I'm downloading Baldur's Gate 3 as soon as it's released for Xbox.

No version for Intel MacOS? Crazy. It's like the early obsolescence of PowerPC Macs all over again. It's looking like Linux will soon be the only option for those of us still with Intel Macs wanting to stay current...
I think if You want to stay current you'll have to just buy a Windows machine and don't look back.

Really do agree that the App Store lacks any kind of community and almost feels 'lonely' compared to a software marketplace like Steam, which makes for vibrant community and I sincerely hope Valve one day comes around with a native steam version.

In any case love hearing more and more gaming news for Macs! The road ahead is really starting to look interesting.

The hard truth is MacOS NEEDS a couple of major native multiplayer games such as CS2, DOTA, LOL and Valorant then by extension all those single player games will receive more love due to more gamers using the platform.

The game is beautiful, although it probably helps that I set all the graphics settings to max, and I'm running it on a Mac Studio M2 Ultra. But I got stuck at the very first challenge: scratch the tree. It shows an image of Left Mouse Button and Right Mouse, but I'm playing on a PS4 controller. I have a Magic Trackpad, I don't even use a mouse.

Mac Intel Dude: Sorry, if you own an Intel Mac, your machine is totally obsolete. Apple currently produces NO Intel-based Macs of any kind. If you want to stay current, that is impossible on an Intel Mac.

The icons here actually confused me, too... with just the keyboard and trackpad on my MBA available...

Took me longer than I'm comfortable to admit before I tried tapping the trackpad (left-click), and then two-finger tapping (right-click). :D

That didn't work for me, but I'll try it again. Apparently scratching will become a required game action, later on.

I still use my Intel Mac every day, so it's clearly not totally obsolete for me. Sounds more like a "you" problem.

November 2020: Just over three years.

Expecting Apple to support Intel Macs for a while is reasonable. Expecting third party developers to put money into releasing new software for a shrinking market, years after the hardware stopped shipping for almost everyone (everything but the Mac Pro transitioned in 2021 or earlier), is not. I'm glad they decided to support Mac hardware at all. It'd be nice if we could get some real momentum for gaming on the Mac.
