Nintendo going after ROM sites is possible, they've been doing that for a while, but regular users getting arrested because they've downloaded something from one of these sites is grade A fearmongering.

Nonsense.

Stop misleading people.

Some downloaders are mass reuploaders too.

Don't waste time trying to play Mario Bros 8 bit. You can just watch someone play that on YouTube and get bored.

Play Ghost of Tsushima instead.

Thanks to the EU. Without them, there would be no emulator on iOS in the USA.

In case anyone asks why:
Because Apple had to install the opening for the EU anyway and could not explain why this change should be impossible in the rest of the world.
Compare this with the General Data Protection Regulation and Facebook's lamentations a few years ago.

So face it:
Even if you don't live in the EU, you benefit from regulations for more competition and user freedom.
Still in EU you are forced to use those crap alt store instead of App Store. No Delta in standard App Store. And I work in support you don’t understand how the normal users are confused by alt stores, and they will blame apple not developers.

Behind a pay wall
Which, given the games belong to them they are allowed to do.

I only ever use emulators to set free my captive digital purchases. I paid Sony a lot of money for a lot of digital PSP titles and I'll be damned if I am going to let them rot. Ditto my 3DS games and all those GBA titles I got for free by being an early adopter. I see no reason why I can't play backups of games I already paid for on other devices.

they will blame apple not developers.
Supplier / manufacturer has chosen to distribute their product(s) through other stores, not ours.
Not that hard to understand a concept. Also...

No Delta in standard App Store. And I work in support you don’t understand how the normal users are confused by alt stores
Wouldn't you agree though that consumers seeking out emulator software are much less likely to confuse stores?

Please dear Delta developer(s), if you are read this, consider launching it on the Apple App Store, even if it’s paid, even if you have to change something to differentiate it from the Alt Store version. I don’t want to install multiple App Stores on my devices.
It came to the App Store a couple months ago.

First of all, I'd be surprised if these sites kept any kind off detailed logs in the first place. Second, even if Nintendo could get its hands on internet connection records, and that's a big if, they could likely only show that you visited a particular site, but not whether you downloaded a particular file. Visiting ROM sites isn't illegal. Third, even if none of this is true, it will then depend on whether this conduct is a criminal offence in the user's jurisdiction, which it very well may not be.

Overall I think Nintendo will have a very hard time showing that a particular individual violated their copyright.
Don't forget in the case of these games, some of which date back to the 1980s... the studios and publishers that made them are long out of business, or they've been acquired 8 times in the past 3 decades and might exist in some dusty EA archive or in Microsoft's portfolio somewhere. There's no lawyer staying up late wondering who stole a copy of Kwirk when Atlus has been out of business for 15 years.

I swear man... some of these MacRumors readers don't live in a real universe. Will Nintendo viciously protect Tears of the Kingdom on Switch? Probably. Will a defunct game company that last existed in 1994 and their CEO passed in 2008 give a crap you have their ROM? Nope.

Thank the EU for USB-C iPhones, as well. They forced Apple's hand to get rid of those pesky lighting ports before Apple was ready.

What am I missing here? I’ve had the Delta app on my 12.9 iPad for a few weeks now. Is this something different? Playing the original Mario has been a blast.

I wonder if we will ever be able to have a thread about emulators that doesn’t devolve into arguing about ROM sourcing and ethics

Can’t we just talk about the emulator and let people do whatever they want in terms of ROMs?
People were asking because they didn't know how to get ROMs but you can't just ignore the fact that they're often pirated because people might not want to download that

the only way to get the roms the legit way is to buy a device (game copier like game doctor) that lets you copy real games. it lets you back up games to floppy disk.

I've enjoyed the hell out of this so far - the 'Pro Max' iPhone form factor really hits the sweet spot for me (and turns my 13PM into a supercharged Game Boy). N64 titles (like Goldeneye) and other PS1 ones (which can be played through an app called 'Gamma') that require joystick/control stick movements have a steep learning curve (at least for me) if using the onscreen controls.

On the other hand, the old school, side-scrolling 'beat-em-up' games I enjoyed like Final Fight, TMNT, Mortal Kombat et al work *great* - haven't played any of those in a good 25yrs at least (have been sticking to SNES titles for now)

You are welcome, but... you know the irony of this? Delta for iPad is NOT available for EU users 🤬

Alt Store (and any other alt stores) is not available for iPadOS. Only for iOS.

And, as far as I understand, Delta can't be released on EU App Store. So the result is that EU iPad users can't have Delta.

here you can find the whole explaination https://mastodon.social/@imkh/112773496009665068
Yeah the emulator dev seems like a bit of a prick. He could have just charged 99 cents worldwide to offset the ctf but he’s on a mission to make his own App Store a thing (to the detriment of EU users who won’t just get the app for free but are being charged to access this ALTStore). Well, the store’s a dud, with no new apps since launch…
I think most people in the EU are just waiting (even if they don’t know it yet) for Provenance to just release worldwide on the Apple App Store and then Delta is irrelevant in the EU (as well as Riley’s ALTStore).. what a joke

Like I was trying to point out in another comment, that’s not 100% true. There are tons of games being made for retro systems. I’m making one for Gameboy color and I know a bunch of others for Gameboy, NES, Genesis, Dreamcast, you name it

Most of those games are sold as ROMs
