there used to be an app which could play all mkv's witht dts. It was Its Playing 3.7. I had purchased it and till today I install that version and never update that one app. :) It works well.

It should be noted that this 'update' is severely crippled.

No support for Dolby/AC3 means VLC is pretty much useless for most mkv movies.

Yikes. So sticking with 2.3 is the way to go. How to stop it updating automatically - when it becomes available? (without having to stop *every* app updating automatically.)

I downloaded this a couple days ago and since it plays none of my DVD rips it's worth exactly what I payed for it, nothing!

Infuse looks good if this new VLC turns out to be a dud.

One thing... can you adjust playback speed on Infuse?

I usually speed up stuff at 1.25x or 1.5x

It doesn't look like Infuse lets you create folders from within the app.

I've always preferred GPlayer but they haven't updated for ios8. Presumably, it's downscaling videos to iphone 5 resolution and zooming to fit the screen on the 6.

I'm so relieved it's back! All I've been wanting these past couple of months is a media player that allows you to set playback speed for audio files (and not just audiobooks in the iOS music app). It's nuts that I couldn't seem to find any other media player app with that useful feature.

What format are you ripping them to? What other devices do your rips have to play on that require a format that isn't supported here?

I think this app can play ac3
AcePlayer -Powerful Media Player. by Tom Yuen

It seems that the drop box app can play ac3 files too

Can't find it on my phone via the App Store, iTunes crashes on my desktop when I search for VLC. Whatever, the old version works just fine.

iOS and apple as a whole don't have majority of marketshare? It's not like people are forced into the apple ecosystem..

You weren't forced into Windows either and still had to use IE to some extend amongst the other accusations towards Microsoft.

Now granted, they got slapped on their fingers because Windows has a huge fraction of the home consumer OS market, however one should not that I don't mean iOS as monopoly, but the App Store as a monopoly within iOS.

For app distribution to home consumers the Apple App Store has a marketshare north of 99% (accounting for the slight impact of Cydia and other jailbreaking sideloading techniques)

Still not seeing the new VLC in UK App Store...

In other news, I downloaded Infuse to try out on recommendation from your good selves and now my iPhone is periodically switching to Safari and bringing up hardcore pr0n sites! Which I thought wasn't even possible on the iPhone (not jailbroken).

... and not great when I'm sat with the missis either!!... especially angry that these sites its bringing up aren't even that good!

To be honest, I'm baffled the EU hasn't already been on that.

I mean, Apple has a strict monopoly on publishing iOS applications to consumers and to just run your own code on your own devices you need to pay for the Apple developer program.

Really surprised this has been going on for ~5 years now with no sign of investigation.

Honestly I think that unless people are prepared to pay the millions that Apple paid to develop their program, they should stop complaining about it. You don't build a house and let everyone come to your house whenever they choose. You make your rules.

There are clear choices being Windows (which is not really open either) and Android if you don't like the app store rules. I enjoy an ecosystem that encourages quality software and a stringent testing policy rather than having to deal with thousands of apps that are published just to steal my money.

I see it as a clear situation where people always want to see the most successful companies dethroned. Use the choices you have. Buy a PC or an Android Phone.

Considering android has almost all of the apps the App Store has, and developers are free to publish on more than just apples store I don't think this is a strong enough case.

I've been using AV player which is great except the developers haven't updated the app for iPhone 6/6+ screens.

I tried infuse after seeing so many mention it. I like it except for the fact that you can't download movie files from Dropbox or google drive directly in the app. You need to save it from the providers app and its a slow cumbersome process.

With AV player and also VLC you can just select multiple files and import them right inside the app

This is one of the ways that App Store policy is crippling iOS, and I hate seeing it.

Other platforms can have VLC just fine. The licensing issues are between the author and the license holders, but we can continue to use the software while it's worked out.

With iOS, Apple is happy to pull the app at the first sign of a license dispute, and we are denied access to the software. So we end up with crippled garbage like this in the app store because of that.

I love iOS for many reasons, but utterly hate this issue. The ability to legitimately sideload applications would turn iOS from a great operating system to an absolutely amazing one. I know, it'll never happen, but one can wish, right?

Because apple would likely be the ones sued, as it has money. Even if the suit is not successful, it would cost Apple significant resources in time and money to defend.
All too often in the legal world, it is the process that is more a punishment than the consequences of actually being found guilty.

And side loading? It will never ever happen. You are using the wrong platform if you want that.

If the apps were sideloaded, Apple would have no liability since they're not distributing the app.

This is how it is on the Mac. Developers are happy to distribute on the Mac App Store if their app doesn't run afoul of Apple's policies. But there's the option of direct distribution if not.

Like we both said.. won't happen. But it would be nice.

Showed up in App Store Updates today but I get a message that says it is no longer available. The version that comes up is 2.4.1 dated Feb 12, 2015 if that helps anyone. I had downloaded VLC prior to its removal form the App Store the first time.

So the new version is a downgrade from the old one?
I have 2.1.1 installed currently.
