Don't get me wrong, in no way am I flaming the update. I actually do enjoy it and have been waiting ages for it. But I'm disappointed they didn't include some green into the app. Kind of like this design mockup which I love (apart from the speech bubbles, I would change them).

Well, I hate that every iOS 7 app is super bright now. What I do is activate triple click to turn screen to negative and voila ! Night mode on.

Has anyone else noticed that speech recognition text input is not working on the new version? For whatever reason, the little microphone left of the space bar is grey/disabled. That sucks, because I used to use this feature a lot.

I don't understand what status you mean? It's not a chat app like AIM. It's like Whatsapp.

You can choose to opt out of showing what device you're on (ie phone, laptop, whatever)..

Yes it is effectively a chat app like Aim. In Adium I have multiple contacts who use their Google accounts and I can see them whether they are online on their computers or on their phones and it shows status ("available", "away", etc), and it also seemlessly transfers between both phone and computer so that when the computer is shut down they are still shown as being connected due to the app on their phones.

However, in the iOS app you cannot set the status like you can using a chat app like Adium, which is odd.

My biggest issue with the Hangouts app is that it doesn't have an option to hide the message preview from lockscreen notifications (Whatsapp does).

Could it have not at least been green instead of blue for the colour?

All these 'flat' designs remind me of when the iOS was first opened up for devs and all the apps looked boringly identical. Flat is great, but add SOMETHING to it, or else christ I can't tell what app I'm using.

EDIT: Beaten to it, THIS, is far better than the update.

...another bright white app I can use as a torch. I've noticed a few apps getting night themes since ios 7. I hope apple take note.

True... I for one cherish the addition of a dark themed keyboard in iOS 7.1 beta 1...
Let's hope it's here to stay, because no matter what the app developer did, as soon as the new keyboard API is tapped, right now you'll get your eyes burned when laying down in your bed late at night trying to use an app.
Suddenly half the screen sends a beam of hell straight to your retina.

Good thing they didn't patch the old iFunbox method of installing it on an iPad... I intend on replacing my phone with the iPad mini when a jailbreak for 6.1.3/7 is released, but this will help maintain its usability as such until then.

Hangouts is an SMS like app, not an instant messaging app. There is no status like AIM. Google Talk is what you are talking about with Adium. Google Talk will be phased out. Hangouts is not XMPP compatible and won't work through Adium. There is a Chrome extension for Hangouts that works great.

Between iMessage and Hangouts, Whatsapp is terribly outdated, and it's annoying to be tied to just my phone to get messages.

And now Whatsapp has been robbed off all personality by the ios7 flat-craze. Look at the lists of chats. White, white, white and with those razor thin lines to separate the chats. It just doesn't look nice.

The blue on white symbols and text make it feel like some sort of medical device.

Whatsapp always had sort of a cozy feel to it, not anymore.

Try increasing your contrast in the settings. I noticed that this eliminated the lag I was having and also made the keyboard look normal again. Before, the keyboard is sort of grey with the buttons sort of smooshed together, and after increasing contrast it looks like a normal white keyboard now.

General > accessibility > Increase contrast > on

Unfortunately makes various other things look kind of worse (like the dock, for example).

No, it's definitely not depending on the contrast settings. It really doesn't work, I cannot click it.
Strangely enough it only happens from time to time. It happened the first time I used the new WhatsApp. The next day it worked perfectly fine. But 2 days later it again didn't work.
Must be some bug with WhatsApp....

It's just been updated - the animations for going back and fourth are smooth now.
