Wow, I hate to break it to Reddit, but a lot of these users won't be converting to the Reddit app. Personally, I'll probably just stop using Reddit all together.
you won't stop because you didn't stop when stores didn't take apple pay

Imagine telling Wal-mart you will use their entire infrastructure for FREE to sell your own stuff and getting mad they now want to make you pay to use their store to sell your goods all while already charging users a monthly/yearly fee.
His announcement on Reddit goes into more detail - he accepts your argument and wanted to pay.

This a kick in the gut, for social media & another app to be deleted from my iphone :( after paying the premium price.

File for a refund from iTunes. Just renewed my 9.99 yearly fee but I am not losing anymore money on Apps shutting down. Love Apollo but not sure how I feel about this. No notification to current subscribers about this. I get to read it here.

He’s going to offer an in-app refund experience similar to what Tweetbot did. When you launch the app after he’s stopped it using the Reddit API, the experience will explain and offer your options to get a refund.

I never used Apollo but previous articles had the creator arguing the "indie developer" can't compete. If you are as large as Apollo... I'm not sure you would still be considered "small" and can still play that card. The product just rode on the back of a larger company for free and didn't bother to really monetize (I assume) to be able to support itself.

The first-party app has always worked well for me.
It’s literally one guy.

He’s happy to pay and has monetised. The issue is the obscene fees reddit is asking.

If it was more reasonable he would be fine.

The thing for me, is that I’ve learned so much by using Reddit (as I have from MacRumors).

Having said that, I’d say it’s become a bit of an addiction in all honesty.

Instead of it being a point of reference that I turn to as and when I need an opinion on something (like you would ask a friend or a group of friends), I find myself scrolling through my subscribed sub Reddits just because.

Deleted my Reddit account just now, feels quite liberating ☺️

I’m down to 90 minutes daily screentime on my phone already in recent years, likely be under 60 minutes soon.

I only visit Reddit due to Google search results finding the answers there. I really don't care about Apollo for the few times that I visit Reddit to look for some answers.

What I like about Reddit is that it’s an aggregator of forums, in a similar vein to how GameFaqs or IMDB used to be good for specific games/movie forums. Reddit killed GameFaqs traffic in all but the big boards, and IMDB killed their own boards sadly.

Ignore all the garbage, super popular subs, everything political and anything related to hot button social issues - that way madness lies.

The strength of Reddit is smallish, focussed subs that aren’t filled with memes and triggered extremists that dominate the big subs. Some great info and discussion to be found in these lower key subs if you show discernment in finding them.

Anyway, I’m done with it, their website is a nightmare, and less time on the net the better. Back to early 00’s type internet usage for me, random posts like this speaking to no one in particular, haha.

In preparation, and when I saw much of my subs were going to go dark in protest, started unsubbing some subreddits. I want to see if I can mentally avoid going on Reddit to prepare myself for ultimately leaving the platform altogether.

imagine having absolutely no idea what you're talking about

I have decided to do likewise.

I would like to check if there is any value in first deleting all my posts (mainly as a middle finger to reddit management) using a service like shreddit, or just go ahead and delete my account?

Imagine commenting on articles about products being shut down that you don’t use.

Imagine crying for an app that didn't pay Reddit using their data for years. Reddit is not a charity.

Apollo can raise money through advertisement or include 3rd party subscriptions via the Apple Store to keep it running, but instead they choose to blackmail Reddit.

Reddit is going to do an IPO soon and investors want to see money, it is as simple as that.

This is super unfortunate news, but I don't believe people will stop using Reddit all together. I love Apollo, but I'm certainly not going to give up Reddit over this.

Anybody who says they will should authentically ask themself, "Am I never going to log in again? Am I never going to READ the result of a Google search if I see it comes from Reddit?"

Yup.

Did it with Twitter, and it was even easier with Reddit because I didn’t use it anywhere near as much.

I did try the home-grown Reddit app though. After five minutes, realised it wasn’t for me so I binned my account.

EDIT: I just listened to part of the recorded conversation with the Reddit CEO and I'm siding with Reddit on this one. The guy behind Apollo seems to be some young punk that can't communicate professionally. It's like he kept fiddling with something while talking, and talking over the CEO. It was very unprofessional. 😳

Really? And what was your opinion on the CEO claiming the “young punk” had attempted to blackmail Reddit into buying Apollo for ten million – a claim found to be false when the aforementioned “young punk” produced a recording of the conversation.

Oh, and this is the same CEO who was caught altering messages by making changes to the Reddit database.

Dang! That’s a good idea deleting posts, hadn’t thought of that, too late now. I wasn’t very prolific though, and I very rarely created new threads. I’d have done it had I thought of that though.

As someone who used Apollo for browsing, and only ever made 1 post, it's sad in a way, but I guess I'll just have more time to do more productive things.

Thanks, Reddit! Now I have more free time for better hobbies.

What absolute nonsense. It’s clearly laid out that their idea of being paid for, an earning they would not have if the same users use their own product, is not viable to a developer of that size. But sure go right ahead and pretend that there would have been a reasonable solution in spite of the evidence.
And all of that for a comment on something you don’t even use or seem to have paid any attention to in detail. Posting spite outside of your interest zone must be an appealing hobby to some.
