Apple and Porsche seems to go great together! Both are proprietary, secretive, premium, and apparently concerned about ethical user data collection.
Both are indeed very solid brands. I don't know the amount of iPhones but 70% of the Porsches ever built are still on the road.

Turns out this is completely untrue. Google has publicly denied it and all new Volkswagen cars have included the Google car capability. There is no way that Volkswagen would be an adopter if the so called Porsche information was correct.

This is just the Internet turning junk into fact.

And...

GM and Ford released statements to TechCrunch indicating that in their vehicles, Android Auto has very limited access to vehicle information. This comes after claims published by Motor Trend magazine that stated Porsche opted to not include Android Auto over the data collected by Google’s in-car infotainment system.
...
Both Ford and GM echoed Google’s statement that in their vehicles Android Auto (and CarPlay, for that matter) only has access to GPS data and simple vehicle information, such as the time of day and whether the car is parked or in drive.

Android Auto Has Very Limited Access To Data In GM And Ford Vehicles - TechCrunch

Apparently Google had originally asked for more info back in the beginning of Android Auto, but didn't mind if a maker didn't want to provide more.

I DID NOT say what you attributed to me. Please be careful with your quoting:
"citysnaps said:
I know the default position on these forums is to hate Google. Whatever, it's a mac rumors site. But it'd be nice if the hate was based on fact and not speculation. And the only thing that exists now is speculation."
I don't know, I think the quote button glitched. I didn't fudge anything. Strangely, the guy I was actually quoting replied to me too.

Smart move, as a car manufacture I wouldn't have gone with android either for the same reasons.

Just to add a little more to KDarling's good post -

From another forum...]

ODBII and your friendly government (NOT)
For the record, New York State shares ALL the info on your ECU with Auto Insurers and the Tax Department.

Why, because NYS MONETIZED THE DATA and gets PAID for it by the insurers or through increased tax revenue.

Every car that has a required annual Vehicle Inspection and an OBDII port, sends the contents of the ECU to Albany.

That includes mileage, highest speed and acceleration/deceleration among other things like if the ECU has been re-programmed for better speed, lower economy Air/Fuel ratios etc.

You give up the right to keep that data private when you get a license.

Wow, that's really messed up. Never had anyone plug into my ODB when having an MOT over here.

So you are locked to a Apple device for the lifespan of the car? This is just a bad idea, since the phone and chip technology moves way faster than the car technology. You change phones every other year, but keep the car for a way longer time. I sold a 2009 Audi A6 for a family member, the car actually cost around 100.000$ new in Norway in 2009, and I was not able to connect an iPhone 5 wireless to it without upgrading or doing some serious tampering. Car manufacturers need guaranteed forwards compatibility for all devices for at least 10-15 years.

Really? They don't use the OBD data to help calculate emissions functionality? Sounds like a VW corporate wet dream :)

Here in the States, prosecutors in serious lawsuits can get access to a car's stored driving data. This is common with deaths caused by street racers who claim they were not speeding. I also saw one case not long ago where a minister was convicted of a hit-and-run at night. He claimed he didn't even know he hit anyone, but his car's data dump showed that he hit the brakes hard at the time of the accident.

Another use is opt-in with insurance companies for something called Usage-Based Insurance. You pay according to your driving distances, times and behavior. If you're a safe driver, it's a way to save money.

Do they just sell aggregate data on driving behaviors? Or do they actually pinpoint the owner of the vehicle?

(I've gotten nailed for parking tickets before, when I loaned a car out. Tickets naturally go to the owner, and so would any driving data, even if you weren't the driver.)

Next step will be you have to log on to the car before driving. With your personal biometrics.

The rest you can imagine...

Ha. I'm actually waiting for the first TV show which uses smartphone biometrics to solve a case.

Except I'd have a twist, where someone steals say, an iPhone, and uses it with a fake fingerprint to purchase a pack of gum (with Apple Pay) near a murder site, then returns the phone.

The real owner could protest all they wanted that they were asleep at home at the time, but the evidence of a Touch Id certified purchase at the crime scene would put them in jail.

Indeed, this opens up to a very bad world.

Or maybe, the device manufactures need to "guarantee" backward compatibility.

I think Volkswagen Polos and Golfs have it as an option for £99.

I'm not aware of that. I spoke to VW and they said it would be available on the 2016 version of the Tiguan launching next April. I've spoken to sales people at all the major car showrooms and most them had not even heard of CarPlay. It's very frustrating. If the Tiguan is getting it then I'll buy that car.

Don't buy the car just because you can get carplay on it. I have carplay and I used it maybe 5 times and then never went back. I think it, and Android auto as solutions looking for a problem and the current implementation of both leave a lot to be desired.

If you use their iOS app, Volkswagen Configurator, CarPlay is an optional extra called Car-Net App-Connect. It costs £100 on the Polo.

No we have a scope that goes up the cars exhaust and measures the actual output at idle & underload. We're still pretty free to modify our cars over here. My AM has the secondary cats removed and still passes the emissions test :)

I don't understand everyone's gripe. If you don't want car play then don't use it and carry on. The car will perform the same with or without it. I mean really?
If you were in the market for this car, are you really saying that you would pass this car up because it doesn't have android? Obviously you guys are feeding the sensationalism troll, no matter the angle that's just asinine.
