I love the idea of the electric and they are faster off the line, and maybe if I ever do buy a car there will be a viable alternative in terms of range and quick fill ups - but I don't see those yet.

I've never driven an electric car, but I'm guessing the amount of instant torque makes it an awesome ride.
But as some have alluded to, suspension, cornering and steering can greatly affect how 'fun' the drive is. I suspect Porsches and BMW's still have an edge over Tesla on that.

I must be really getting old. When I was just a puppy, hot rods, rock and roll and beautiful women were what excited you. Times sure have changed..
After a tough day at work, I go blasting through the canyons in my 911 Turbo S. On weekends, I take this same Porsche to the track and really drive it, and it takes no special prep or care and it never breaks. This is what makes Porsche special. All their cars are race cars for the street. Now that CarPlay is supported, it just sweetens the deal..

I have always had a thing for the boxster. I don't even own a car, but if I ever bought a car that really is the number 1 car that I would look at. Audi would be another (I have owned that before), but not the R8, as that is way too much, so probably the TT roadster. You should go to the configurator and put together your dream Boxter. You have a conservative vibe about you though. Could possibly make it out with a bone stock Boxter.:D:p

VW does have an amazing stable of brands. The new TT RS is hot.

No I am clear on price. Last time I configured my dream boxster it was around 80k (and I missed the color coded keys :D)

Apple should concentrate on making a better car mode for iPads, people don't want to upgrade cars to get new car play features.

Model 3 already looks better, is cheaper, and I'd guess it probably performs better. Also, this thing looks useless from a utility perspective. It has no cargo space and it only seats a single passenger.

guess you're a little biased : yes - that "thing" is a two seat sports car - they generally do one seat one passenger!
It has remarkable good cargo on the front boot - but that's usually not one's main concern when selecting such a car.

And Porsche has a long history of exceptionally good handling cars. Tesla is a new comer - doing well, but it's silly to suppose that it's going the beat Porsche's handling in a first generation car. I sure Tesla's own engineer's aren't expecting that - especially with the heavy battery back they have to design around.

This Carplay rollout is absurdly slow. There isn't a single vehicle I'm in the market for that has it. The 2016 Auto Show was a sea of terrible, terrible OEM touch screen interfaces.

As for looks, Tesla better fix that nose.

Tesla is the one who has the nose figured out. Porsche has the ugly design which they had to go with because their engine doesn't function without the holes.

Saying the Porsche is beautiful because of its nose is like saying the iPhone 6 antenna lines make it beautiful. The antenna lines aren't beauty marks - they're there because Apple couldn't find a way to make the antennas work without them.

Tesla went from having a holey nose that looked like that with the original Model S, to dropping it with the Model X, Model 3, and redesigned Model S.

It takes some time to get used to, just because you're so used to the old way. It took around 3 days for me to realize it looks better without the holes in the nose.

The engine in this car is in the back, buddy.
Just because you don't like something it does not mean it is ugly.
I know this is the internet but you can still say you don't like something instead of calling something that is a result of countless hours of engeneering and design ugly.

And yes, those vents are probably for used for cooling the brakes though.

Um.... the Cayman is not front-engined, It's mid-engined/rear wheel drive.

What are you going on about? You clearly don't know what you're talking about.

1. Patently obvious cars is not your thing. Not a criticism, just an observation. 2. Find a single quote where I said either a) the Porsche was beautiful because of it's nose or b) where I said the Porsche was beautiful at all.

The nose on the Model 3 isn't ugly because it's closed, or not holey* <-- makes me giggle when I say it. It's ugly because it's unnecessarily abrupt. The rest of the car is proportioned very nicely. That nose isn't. Rounding off that harsh stoppage and continuing to let it flow with the rest of the lines in the car would solve the issue. That's just my opinion, and it's okay that we differ. People like different things.

* Not really sure why you think the Model 3 doesn't have a hole in the front facia (nose of the car) because it does. Maybe you mean it doesn't have a grill. It's that lack of a grill that makes the Model 3 look a little like Leela from Futurama.

That nose is going to be a huge bug collector. Reminds me of an old VW Passat.

Don't forget the roar of the engine. I test drove a Cayman GTS and wow, what a ride... and the sound of that engine was just pure awesomeness.

In the end, I couldn't justify spending that much for something I'd use mostly on the weekends so I ended up buying a "lowly" BMW.

This is getting pretty far off topic, but just wanted to note that if you're going for practical transport and modest (not bad, just not at all exciting) performance and want an electric, the Volt is already totally there.

It's a bit pricey (though models coming off the 3-year lease now are quite reasonable), but what makes the Volt nice is that if you're driving less than ~40 miles per day, it's an electric car. Plug it in when you get home, it's ready to go another 40 all-electric miles tomorrow. If you rarely travel long distances in your car, you could probably drive the thing all-electric, all the time.

If/when you do need to drive farther, or make two trips in a day, or whatever, suddenly it becomes a regular gasoline hybrid. Not incredibly efficient, but ~37-40mpg range.

It's not the right vehicle if you need to carry 5+ people or a bunch of luggage. It's not the right car if you crave 0-60 times under 9 seconds or brutal cornering performance. It's not the right vehicle if you want to be able to drive cross-country all-electric.

But as a general-purpose 4-door sedan with a hatchback, particularly for people with a <20 mile commute or who mostly do local driving, it's a great compromise.

Paying the equivalent of $1 per gallon for gas in a car that gets 40mpg is sure nice, too.

I drive a 2011 A3 TFSI. The kind of thing you'd race in Scotland. The 2.0 turbo is way more fun than a TT. I tried both and went this route. It's a shame the modern A3 isn't a hatchback but you can still get these guys used and in good shape.

Car play finally available? I immediately need to get this new Porsche!! Oh wait...

I looked at Cayman a couple of years ago, too noisy for me and bought another 911. I drove them on a short track (Barber in Birmingham, AL) at the Porsche Driving School and they're a lot of fun. Noise didn't bother me on the track because we had to wear helmets.

What?

The A3 and TT share a platform, but the TT is lighter, smaller, and more playful (due to shorter wheelbase)

They do sell the Sportback here in the US, but it's e-tron only.
