Looking forward to getting this in my 911 someday.

Will Porsche be around then when Waymo/Tesla's Robotaxi are simply going to put them out of business?

The Porsche brand is largely for people who love the driving experience. Robotaxis will never even dent their bottom line. Especially from the likes of Tesla.

The lack of CarPlay is one of VERY few things I don't like about my Tesla. If Tesla had followed through on Musk's talk of making an App Store for Tesla back in *2019*, I'd be less envious. I mean, there's plenty of room on the main screen for a CarPlay window.

There’s no retrofitting possible - so only if you decide to buy a new 911.

Apple really are in catchup mode. Quite a few manufacturers are already committed to using Android Automotive with the likes of Volvo/Polestar, Renault and Nissan going down the full route of integrating Google Automotive Services (think google maps, google/gemini assistant and the playstore), so Apple has an uphill task trying to convince car manufacturers to switch away. Some manufacturers, such as Mercedes, still see value of their own proprietary system rather than passing data to a third party. Those really need to be Apple’s target market as proprietary systems tend to be pretty poor from a usability standpoint (doubt Mercedes will switch any time soon as they’ve spent a small fortune on their new MB.OS).

On the subject of Porsche using CarPlay Ultra, they’ve also said they’ll use Android Automotive, so it isn’t clear what they will offer. Maybe we’ll know more when the new Boxster and Cayman are revealed towards the end of this year.

They went into the architecture of the new Carplay last year. It’s called local UI, which the gauges are basically rendered on the car and displayed right on the car’s displays but basically echoed back to the iPhone.
They go into local UI here at 4:07: https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2024/10111/
At the risk of splitting hairs, punch-through UI and local UI are different. Local UI shows things like the car's indicators on the screen. Punch-through UI lets a CarPlay button take you to a car-specific interface without taking you outside CarPlay. An ideal implementation would use both.

Exactly, that's what I was saying. Punch through is for things outside of Carplay but local UI is kind of a hybrid that has car content rendered by the car but Carplay still "styles" it, if you will. That's why gauges still work without the phone, phone could shut down or get thrown out the window, gauges still there even in Carplay Ultra (phone specific stuff like nav and apps and things won't work then).

I believe both are required for Carplay Ultra to be "ultra". Ultra seems to require all screens be controlled by Carplay, including gauges, and gauges by necessity are local UI. Punch through is needed for car-specific programming like stereo settings and such.

Makes, sense -- thanks for clarifying.

Not that any auto manufacturers are listening to me, but CarPlay Ultra seems very thoughtfully conceived and gives manufacturers lots of room to customize and to accommodate car-specific features. Apple may have to bend even further in the customization direction, but I hope manufacturers will get on board with this. I'm buying my next car in a year, and this would certainly be a selling point for me.
