I owned 3 Teslas over the years and I really like the level of integration they had with everything they offered. Problem is, they don't always partner with all the services people would like to use while in the vehicle -- and depending on the service? The apps were pretty buggy and unreliable.

For example? Tesla always came with support for TuneIn streaming radio. But the user experience with it was pretty bad. I had it repeatedly lose/forget my preset favorite stations and it often had connection issues. Sometimes I had to just reboot the whole entertainment system on the Tesla to get it working properly again.

I'm also a believer in the idea that some things are best kept as their own physical buttons, switches or knobs. That's one place I think Tesla has been making mistakes in recent years. The older vehicles of theirs had things pretty much right, IMO. But going to things like no more physical shifter to change gears between park, reverse, neutral and drive? That's just awkward.
I have an older model Tesla, it won’t get Apple Music support until December 10 because that’s when I have my MCU upgrade scheduled at the service center. And that’s even if they got the parts delivered to them in time. So I am forced to use Spotify for the time being, and the Spotify integration is…okay. It isn’t the greatest, just okay. Unlike CarPlay I can’t let other users scan a QR code and control the car from their phone, and I don’t want to disconnect my phone to let them connect theirs because then I would lose all hands free access when I am the one behind the wheel. I would prefer Tesla just get CarPlay and be done with it at this point.

The Text message integration pretty much works, but that’s a low bar. It shows me only new messages that come in, and doesn’t sync up the older messages onto the MCU screen, which I would really like to have. Calendaring integration works.

The VW group abandoned their in-house software efforts and switched to Android Auto as the back end on their current cars, including Porsche. VW also just invited $5B in Rivian and will switch to Rivian software approx model year 2026-27. Google it.

I love CarPlay because I like to mirror my iPhone but I don't want or need CarPlay 2.0 and I don't see a future for it.

I’m affraid Apple’s closed CarPlay system will go the same route as tv’s. Nobody wants to get dependent on Apple by Apple rules. That’s why most TV’s run some sort of Android. LG has its own WebOS (which is great by the way).

If Apple wants a bigger part of the automotive business they have to learn to play nice with them. But I’m afraid Apple is too late for that already and Android has been the system of choice for most.
Apple has never offered a TV operating system, so I disagree that fear of Apple's rules is the reason that TV manufacturers use operating systems from other manufacturers.

Also, Android Automotive (essentially, a car operating system offered to manufacturers) is different from Android Auto (overlay system that competes with CarPlay). CarPlay does extremely well vs. Android Auto.

While I would love to use this in my car, my real wishlist item is for Apple to offer Apple Music as a standalone app that could be used on non-Apple platforms. It actually does this for Mercedes (you can use Apple Music without engaging CarPlay) but not for most other manufacturers. And Apple similarly fails to support Apple Music direct streaming on home streaming devices (BluSound, etc.).

That’s not accurate. Apple Music is also available in Tesla and Rivian through their own apps. Mercedes’ implementation isn’t that great but works better for me than Tesla’s did.

Same for Teslas and the app is pretty good.

I don’t see the benefit of auto manufacturers adopting the latest version of CarPlay, especially luxury brands. It would only serve to reduce their brand identity and perceived uniqueness. I wouldn’t buy a $250K Porsche if the dashboard looked the same as a cheap Chevy Bolt, for example.
You don’t buy a Porsche to stare at the dashboard man, but anyway.

Thanks for the correction -- I didn't realize Apple had started to allow this for other manufacturers. I hope this trend continues and extends to home streamers.

So far Tesla, Mercedes*, Toyota*, Lexus*, Rivian, and Polestar* has the ability to use Apple Music without CarPlay. I honestly am happy this is gaining a lot more traction, than just forcing everyone into CarPlay.

*Also has CarPlay as an option.

My TCL Roku TV is Linux, not Android. I’m sure that’s the case with many TVs.
