Do you guys know if once I get there, and provided they agree to swap out my phone, am I required to swap, or can I just keep my original (provided that the one they want to give me is worse and they're unwilling to look at others)?

The swap is not finalized until the genius scans both devices and you sign the warranty paper work.
Just do this, take the genius to the demos on the floor and point out the difference between your phone and the ones they have out and how it's really bugging you that the bezel is not flush.
If he's willing to do the exchange at that point to keep you satisfied he should be able to let you see the replacement phone before he scans it and finalizes the transaction.
The manufacturing will never be sorted out. These iPhones have the same defects as the iPhone 3G had. Look at last years threads when the iPhone 3G came out. A lot of people were complaining about all the same exact things... It's basically a repeat of last year.
thats how my 2g was, it was really bad my beard hair would get caught into it sometimes when talking on the phone.
my new 3gs is flush and perfect
It's threads like these that almost convince me that opening any business where you sell product or services directly to end users is a huge mistake.

After reading all of this I will say one thing. Apple truly is an amazing company to put up with all of our crap. I have had a lot of smart phone from Palm, to Windblows mobile, to Blackberry. All of them will not allow you to replace units for the majority of defects that Apple will replace the phones for. Blackberry for example will not replace the curves for dust under the screen. And I am not talking a few specks of dust like I had with my first 3G iphone last year, I mean full on dust balls. They say it is to be expected and not a reason for warranty replacement because the phone itself functions as it should.
I just hope that with all of us doing exchanges for crap like this, that Apple does not eventually develop these policies as well where they say as long as the phone is working normally, they will not replace them. Time will tell though, because as of now, they are the only company that does this for its customers.![]()
I do agree with this and it is frustrating to see people exchanging their phones over and over and over again for extremely minor things (I got a small ding on my phone, I saw a speck of dust, etc).
However, the flip side is that Apple has established the super high price for their products, in part, due to their excellent customer service and the fact that they will do what they can, within reason, to keep their customers satisfied.
I really questioned swapping my phone out. It had two problems. The casing was way off (which I could live with even if I wasn't happy about it) and the screen was VERY yellow. Also the ambient light sensor was totally whacked out and kept the phone at a very low brightness in dark situations.
The new phone still has a poor casing fit, but the yellow screen is gone. The ambient light sensor still acts up compared to my wife's 3GS and my 3G phone so I suspect a firmware update from Apple to correct that one.
Apple should institute a policy where they will exchange the phone for you one time for minor cosmetic issues, but beyond that you have to pay $99 per exchange.
Get out of here....Man you must be a true Apple Fanboy where you let them do anything to you...If I pay hundreds of dollar for a phone that was advertise...the phone better come just like what was advertise... If the iphone is faulty than Apple should note that on their advertise it like a used car buy as is .the problem is that they don't....IF everyone thought like you we be so screw .
If I spend my hard earn cash it better be prefect to my liking .period
My home button is completely not centered and when I click it on the left side it does nothing. Really thinking of taking it in. Also my bezel is off. But I dont have a yellow screen or bad battery so I dont no if I should risk it.
Apple has a pretty good policy on swap outs, so if you're not happy you should take it in.
However, no iPhone is perfect, they all have defects if you look hard enough so just please don't go in and want to pull 20 of them out of the boxes and examine them. That type of thing eventually ends up in the cost we all pay for these things.
