The seam at the top is suspect. I think what it could be is a chinese iPod Touch knockoff. And the drive inside of it is a 1.8 inch platter drive, that's where 80 GB's is coming from. I haven't heard of any flash memory at 80 GB's.

This is exactly it. It looks like a Chinese fake.

Why are we saying it's fake? It has a pretty realistic story.. being left in a bar, etc. And what looks to be legit pics. Just because it looks like garbage doesn't mean its fake, it could be a prototype.

Real deal

If its a prototype then it would explain why there are seams. My bet is Apple are going to focus on really long-battery life for this years iPhone - just like they have with the iPad and most recent MBP refresh. I'd speculate 10-15 hours talk time and 15-20hrs of Internet/Wi-Fi use.

I don't think its ugly at all wtf it looks like an iPhone lmao. I don't like it MORE than the 3GS but I do like it more than the OG iPhone I've got. Don't really think its the real deal, but hey anything's possible. I'm upgrading this June regardless so it doesn't matter to me.

I notice this has the FCC logo on the back. To have that logo doesn't that suggest this had to go through the FCC, so wouldn't we have seen an FCC filing for the iphone 4G/HD if this was real? I could be wrong here.

That thing is so ugly. Apple wouldn't come out with a phone that looked like a block.

Eh. I've never left my phone at a bar, and my job and livelyhood doesn't depend on it. Somehow I think an Apple Engineer would not be that careless.

Plus it looks terrible.

I call fake.

I agree somewhat with this. Although I think, if it is real, it's just a thrown together case to hold the new gen components and screen and the release model will have a different and much more refined body (not like this one).

One thing is for sure, either Jonny Ive is gonna fire someone or he's laughing his a55 off right now haha.

I actually left my phone at farrellis bar the other night by accoset. Never have I left my phone anywhere except at home once going to work. Luckily a worker or bartender at the bar held it for me.

When the 3GS backing leaked, it still had all of the certification logos on the back.

Anyway, I'm convinced that these photos are of a real device. But there's probably a higher chance of it being a knock off than a genuine iPhone.

A fake phone would have those markings just to pass it off. Explains why everything is also just XX.

We'll know soon. If it is legit, Apple's lawyers will contact Engadget to remove the pics. If they don't than it's fake.

Was that after or before it was FCC certified?

I know it looks different, but I actually believe it's a new iPhone. The reports are it's double the resolution and slightly taller and thicker and "not as rounded" edges/backing.

On the other hand, 80 GB drive seems wrong. In addition, the seams do seem off. And the model number info looks wrong somehow on the back.

I like it, as a prototype, but it needs some refinement.
