(RED) doesnt have an "exclusive" contract with anyone, its a non-profit organization, and apple is listed on (RED)'s website
The contract was signed May 15 2006. If it were a two year exclusive contract, then it expired a couple weeks ago.
Considering the restrictions on App Store apps, you won't be allowed to use iChat for video/audio chat on the iPhone over 3G. This may be specific to AT&T. This may be the new incentive to jailbreak!
Video calls use a QoS guaranteed virtual circuit data, it does not go through the APN and until HSPA+ is not carried by IP at all. The standard is 3G-324M. Apple sponsored (with AT&T) in 2004 an extension to this standard called 3G-324MI which uses H.264 where possible (older phones used H.263 only) to improve 3G video calling. This was ratified by 3GPP in 2004.
It is an extension to the 1999 standard that every 3G handset uses for its built in video calling.
Search for 3G-324MI on this page and look who sponsored it:

The bandwidth isn't a problem it's carriers not wanting voice carried over the internet. This was announced at the SDK launch.
Video calls to regular phones via 3G like every 3G phone since 2003.
iChat Video Chat via WiFi only at the carriers request.
My carrier in 2003 allowed you to make calls from Windows to 3G phones via a Netmeeting gateway, so they could add this to the desktop version of iChat. However Apple would have to do it carrier by carrier so I doubt it since Apple gave up on making carriers add a Visual Voicemail gateway.
Hence why these pics are on a laptop - and taken by someone else with their phone??
That's some episode of "Alias" you're remembering. At Apple, if you don't have clearance, you're not allowed in restricted areas. Period. If you're an artist working in their Ad/Marketing department, you don't just wander down the hall for a break without logging out of your computer or throwing some sort of protection against the type of leak you're talking about. People would lose their jobs if they did.
But the average employee is certainly not allowed in those restricted areas ever... especially with a camera. People who work at Apple love working there and want to keep their job. This was not some sort of inside job. This wasn't someone who just happened to be around a "restricted computer" and outsmarted everyone in that area.
This is a fake. That's it.
I sure hope iChat for windows is true, Its annoying that I cannot use iChat video features to talk to my friends using goggle talk on their PC's I reckon I could easily convince my friends to use an iChat supported network for video chat., Also a drawing board feature in iChat wouldn't go a unappreciated.
SO obviously its safe to say now that these photos were BS
