Nope. I think it's fine too.

Apple isn't going to change the aspect ratio, nor the number of pixels. It may make them slightly bigger, but not by much as it would affect the "retina-ness" of the display.

I think sometimes people get caught up in their endless desire for more. More features, more size, more better. From a practical standpoint increasing the screen size to any of the sizes listed above would be inconsequential; either the icons are slightly bigger or you have a slightly bigger gap between icons on the homescreen. Not worth it.

Thats totally wrong though. A bigger screen, even only .3 inches bigger, would make a big difference and would do way more than simply make icons bigger. Even if Apple did absolutely nothing to iOS to take advantage of the new real estate, and they only made everything bigger, it would still have a huge effect. Notably: web pages would be bigger and would require less zooming, movies would be larger and easier to watch, games would be bigger and allow you to see more of the details....and perhaps most important of all, the keyboard would be bigger! This would be huge for a lot of people.

So don't write off a bigger screen as unimportant. Even if everything was simply made bigger, it would make a huge difference.

This. Nobody gives two ****s if there is a bigger gap between icons. Last time I checked, people don't just stare at their homescreens. I browse the web a ton, and this would make it much better. The keyboard is also a great point. I've gotten pretty fast with the current keyboard, but there are still times I get cramped (constantly hit n instead of m) and this would improve that.

Can you imagine if Apple integrated a nice iOS notification system with the extra screen real estate? No more intrusive pop-ups then!

I for one am not one that is running the notifications out of iOS with my pitchfork. I do think that a new system would be welcome, especially with more room. It would help to combat the stale OS argument if nothing else.

Sedrick would you mind to put all 5 pictures in one row, so i could better see and imagine the differences?

I really want a 4" screen, but if 3.8" is the max. for apple because the wont change the size of the device, from what i see 3.8" is a difference you will notice.

Als keep in mind, that if the go above 3.8", the ppi will go under 300, so i think it wont happen.
Here ya go.

I too would be surprised if apple screwed with the retina-ness (as someone put it) of these amazing screens by simply increasing the size.
I would have thought the screen would stay the same size and the housing would shrink around it. There you go, edge to edge still same resolution as to not stuff up apps display screen, but in a smaller phone.
Or have i missed something and that CAD drawing or whatever it was of the supposed iphone5 had the same measurements as iphone4...

As I understand it (off the top of my head), the current ppi is something like 326, well above what the human eye can discern. Apple could go up to 3.8" and still keep it "retina" at around 300 (in part, by saying since the screen's larger, you'll hold it a bit further away).

It's just my humble opinion that Apple would look the fool if they made the iPhone smaller when everyone else is 4" and up.

But then again, who asked for the new iPod Nano, so you never know what Apple will do.

What if you just moved the entire screen a little higher up on the 4" version (or moved the home button closer to the bottom). Wouldn't that work?

Height isn't the problem, it's the width. Apple could loose the home button entirely, but 4" still won't fit width-wise (if they keep the same aspect ratio) and they aren't going to change the external dimensions of the phone (at least this year).

I hope you're kidding.
Why would they name it iPhone 4HD? It's the 5th generation of the iPhone.

iPhone = iPhone 1
iPhone 3G = iPhone 2
iPhone 3GS = iPhone 3
iPhone 4 = iPhone 4
iPhone 5 = iPhone 5.

By your logic... iPhone 5 = iPhone 6, see what i mean? the 3GS name was used for one reason that it didn't make sense to go from iPhone 3G to iPhone 3. Apple finally got back to numerical value, and since the upgrade from iPad to iPad 2 was numerical i think that's how it'll be for a while as well.
Keep in mind the iPhone 3G was the first kickoff for subsidized iPhones, and the major emphasis was on the 3G network as internally it was similar to the original iPhone.

so because the 4th iphone is the only one that matches your made up rules, my speculation is somehow less valid ?

the first iphone was not named iphone 1
the second iphone release was not named iphone 2
the third iphone was not named iphone 3

the second generation macbook air was not named macbook air 2
the 6th generation ipod nano was not named iPod Nano 6
etc etc

You are using the iphone 4 and the ipad 2 as your only examples to make universal claims

My made up rules? No i'm just looking at the most logical name.

Right, the first iPhone was named iPhone. I put the numbers to show what generation the iPhone was.

The 2nd iPhone emphasized on 3G the most (because the internals are very similar), and it was subsidized thus they named it as that.

The 3rd iPhone was iPhone 3GS, and it made no sense in a marketing way to go from iPhone 3G to iPhone 3, psychologically people would want to see something extra (product name wise) for it to be an upgrade, hence they called it the 3GS.

The 4th iPhone was called iPhone 4

If the 5th iPhone will be called iPhone 4HD like you speculate, then the 6th iPhone will be called iPhone 5? or iPhone 6? Then what would happen to the 5?

I think Apple finally has gotten in track with numerical values and i don't think they would mess it up, but if they do it's fine.
But iPhone 4HD doesn't make any sense, because if anything the iPhone 4 was more 'HD' with their Retina Display, the iPhone 5 will just have a bigger screen.
There's a difference between the names "iPhone 3G" and "iPhone 4".

Lol, actually you're the one making universal claims by bringing in Mac and iPod. I'm only talking about the iPhone here and relating it with the recent release of the iPad 2.

Regardless, it doesn't matter what they name it as, the point remains that it's going to be a major upgrade.

The point I'm trying to make is we have no idea what apple will name the next iphone

and that your speculation is not superior to anyone else's, let just sit back and watch what they call it.

Technically, the human eye cannot descern anything above 300ppi, so Apple could do 3.8" and still call it "retina".

Anyway, this is good for reference if nothing else...

Apple can define Retina Display however they want, as it's a marketing term rather than an actual standard. You're forgetting about one important factor - distance. Apple could conceivably argue that a larger screen would be held farther away from the user thereby not compromising the viewing experience.

Oh, I'm with you on that. Apple can spin this any way they want and once they sprinkle their magic unicorn dust on it, the masses will think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.
