I agree with that in principle. What I'm not sure about is whether everyone has the right to circumvent a carrier's terms and conditions to get what fits his/her needs and wants. :)

I hear that too.
But not many options out there besides paying full price for an iphone in order not to have an unwanted/unneeded feature billed to your account.

Yes, Im pretty sure with the old 2G iphones they will let you remove or not have a data plan.
Make sure you have them block data on that line so you dont get accidental charges.

So... not to hijack this forum or anything, but... ;) I've got a 2G 16gig that is beyond the plan, I'm month to month. Anyways, I'm waiting till next summer for the next iPhone update to upgrade.

My wife then wants my iPhone, not for the data but for the games, calendar, contacts etc... She want's me to delete all the data apps. I could take the sim out of her current phone (moto razer) and put it in my old iPhone and not have to carry two data plans, right?

Thanks!

I'm using my iPhone 3G as a go-phone with data being blocked. I have not received a single text message saying that I shouldn't be doing this.

For the 203840923805023984th time..... why the HELL would you want an iPhone without data?! Without it, the phone is completely pointless. A touchscreen phone that makes calls? Oh, AT&T has about a dozen of those. Plus, you don't have to hack them to make them do what you want. Blah....sorry to be a jerk.

Same reason you would want an iPod Touch?

203840923805023984 post where this was asked get a touch and what ever phone you want problem solved. Also many schools won't allow the phone out during the day but they can use the touch. my daughter has a touch and a LG MV2 on Verizon and she is perfectly happy. if you get the $99 you will have to agree to the data plan at 1st then deal with switching it off. Get a touch you don't have to deal with it!

You obviously don't know anything.

duh wifi?

yes u can

Hi, I bought the first gen iphone when it was first out and had it shipped to Australia, back then the phone was not here nor were the correct data plans, they were very expensive. I used it for a year on no data plan (you can remove the settings out of the network settings in the phones)

It was great because i was on wifi at work and home.

I then upgraded to the 3g when it came to Australia with a data plan, now I started using heaps of data. I moved from an 850meg data allowance up to a 1 gig per month with the 3gs and tend to use about 500meg per month. It makes the phone when you have a data plan but does not hold you back all together.

I would suggest having data on there but thats your choice.

hope this helps

Y.e.s

it is very possible to have an iphone without a data plan. I will walk you through the steps, as i am using this trick right now.

Step one) Sign up for the iphone and the data plan.

Step 2) Take the simcard out of the iphone and put it back in the old phone.

Step 3) Call ATT, tell them you dont like how the iphone works and you just want to get used to it.

Step 4) Have them remove all charges, and have them put a block on the data. ( If you dont, the iphone will automatically use data.)

Step 5) Put simcard back in the iphone. You now have the iphone without a data plan!

How to provision my old 2G for my daughter without a data plan?

jseyf5 and others - thank you for the insights. Sounds straight forward. But I still have alot of questions. I have a 2G iPhone that was purchased more than 2 years ago (so I paid for it day one and every month since). I am going to buy the 3GS and I know I will have to get the $30 plan with the phone. And I am pretty sure they will give me a new sim with the new phone that I will need to activate. All good and easy to understand.

I would like to give the old 2G phone to my daughter who does not have a phone or phone number today. She will join our AT&T family plan for $9.95 per month per additional line. I only want the 2G phone to have phone, text and wifi functionality, no data. And I do not want to pay for a data plan she is not going to use. I have tested unlockit.co.nz and it definitely stops access to EDGE with a change to the APN, so I can use that to block my daughter's data usage.

What do I need to do to get my old iPhone 2G to work for her? Do I need a new sim card from AT&T? Or can I use an old one from my Moto Razr? How do I activate the 2G phone? Do I use my old 2G sim card to activate and then replace with a non-iphone sim? Will this work? Or do I just activate it and then cancel the data?

I know there a ton of posts out there, but almost all of them have conflicting data. I talked to AT&T customer service today and they said it was possible to have an iphone out of contract without data. Later, I called AT&T sales to make the purchase and transfer the 2G to my daughter and the rep (after checking with a supervisor) told me the iPhone's require a data plan (same story I read in this post and others). Seems crazy that I payed for the phone twice already (yes, I was one of the early suckers who paid thru the nose, but a happy one) and still have to pay for a data service I don't want.

Step by step instructions would really help as Apple store and AT&T are not helpful on this point.
