Will it be possible to pre-order the iPad Pro for pickup at an Apple Store?

(has that been possible in previous pre-orders?)

I need to know this also. I'm out of town this week. Would be nice to pick it up at an Apple store.

Then again, the Apple stores may have plenty of them, or not.

Judging by the Apple TV release, probably not. You will most likely either be able to order online for delivery, or just expect to go into the store Friday.

I think the good news is, given the price, this won't be a product tons of people are lining up for. It's a lot more niche than an iPhone or even regular iPad.

But it's the holidays coming up, and people can be unpredictable. But your right, these aren't stocking stuffers.

On release day just order for in store pickup. I did that for the Apple TV, was in and out in 20 minutes.

Thank you!

FYI - I called the Apple Store I'll be traveling near on Friday, and they answered "Yes" to my question.

However, I wonder if they really meant what you @akuma13 said, not what I asked...
Key difference being: I want to PRE-order it Wednesday night, not order it on release day Friday, for Apple Store pickup.

Is there anyway we can just purchase it online, and then "return" it in store and purchase again using Apple Pay in the store? I need to do that to get Discover 22% cash back

Of course you can. The only wrench in this tends to be if you get a cellular device and activate it in the store, or get it with some kind of subsidized discount via the carrier, in which case doing the return/rebuy is messy.

Couldn't you just buy it on-line with the Apple Store app, using Apple Pay? Then you could either have it sent to you or pick it up at the store. No need to return it and repurchase.

The catch is that the Apple Pay payment needs to be an in-store tap. When you use this method do they have you tap Apple Pay in the store or do they use the information from the order to charge you?

The discover card does not work for in app Apple Pay purchases. It only works for in person purchases.

I've used Apple Pay in-app on the Apple Store several times --no need to tap in the store. Most recently I bought the ATV 4 that way.

Weird. Why would Discover work differently than other cards? How do they even know?
It works, what they mean to say is that the Discover 10% cash back only applies to in-store Apple Pay purchases. I'm not sure how they know what is and isn't in-store, but it wouldn't be hard for Apple and other retailers to provide that info with each transaction.

we are not talking about Discover card in general. there is a specific promotion with Discover card used with IN STORE apple pay where u get 22% cashback.

Ah! So it works but you don't get the special promo on line. 22% is no small change!
I can't see how the restriction benefits Discover marketing, but I guess that's my limited thinking.

But there are people lining up already though.

Yes to get the Discover card rewards you have to use it in store. But also the discover card will not work for in app Apple Pay purchases, you physically can't select it at all in apps.

Hmm, I didn't see that option (pre ordering for in store pick up) when I place my order for the ATV on that Monday.

Never said anything about pre ordering. I doubt that option was ever available. If an Apple Store is close to you, the best thing to do will be to order on release day for in store pickup. Why pre order for shipment (having the risk of it coming a few days late) when you can just pick it up at a store?

I just did a chat with Apple about this. Here is the transcript:

Now Chatting with Apple

  • Welcome to Apple.
What can we do for you today?

    I have a purchasing question

Please wait while I connect you with an Apple Specialist.

    Now Chatting with Clinton

Welcome to the Apple Online Store! My name is Clinton, I would love to help answer all of your questions today!

Will I be able to pre order and iPad Pro this Wednesday for in store pick up later this week?

    That is a great question!

Waiting for a great answer :)

While I don’t have any information on if we will be offering personal pick up on the new iPad Pro right as it is being released, historically we haven’t offered that service that early in a products life.

Okay then I have another question.

    Ask away!

When I pre ordered the Apple TV on Monday, the scheduled delivery date was the following week but the Apple TV was actually available to purchase that Friday in the store. That said . . if I pre order an iPad Pro on Wednesday will I get it when it's available in the Apple Store?

I would love to answer that as best as I can for you!

In other words will the iPad Pro pre order be delivered on launch day?

The new iPad Pro isn’t going to be a pre-order but that is when it is going to be released! The reason that the Apple TV orders went out so far from the order date was just the huge response we had and then trying to fill those orders!

So, when I order the iPad Pro online will it be delivered on launch day?

With that being said I would highly suggest being online right at 6:00 AM Central Time on Wednesday to make sure that you are one of the first people in line to guarantee a delivery window as soon as possible!

I did exactly that with the iPhone 6S Plus but didn't get it till much later. I ordered it as soon as the pre orders went live.

We appreciate your commitment to make our pre-orders a success! The iPhone pre-orders are our biggest product launches that we have, we saw orders go from shipping in a week to shipping in a month after just a few minutes of going live that day!

I don’t expect that huge of a response to the iPad Pro and I wouldn’t expect that kind of shipping delays to happen!

Judging from my recent experiences pre ordering the iPhone 6S Plus and ordering the Apple TV . . . Apple really needs to do better in this area (handling product launches).

I completely understand where you are coming from! I would also want to receive my purchase as soon as possible! While we do apologize about the wait times, this is a area that we are focusing on improving with every launch we have!

I sincerely hope that the iPad Pro launch goes better than the last 2.

I hope so as well! But the important part is that the iPad Pro is going to be amazing and worth the wait! I have been waiting for this product to come out since the day I saw it on the Keynote!

May I ask what has you most excited for the iPad Pro?

    Getting it on launch day.

Awesome! Do you have any questions about the device that I can answer for you today?

    Okay, good bye.

I hope you have a excellent rest of your day!

If you have any other questions please feel free to chat back in at any time!

End chat and take a survey(opens in new window)

I just called apple and she would not give me a time when the preorders start but she said I may want to go to a store as they will be in stock Wednesday when they open.
