True, but the machine itself is great, doesn't make noise when calculating video renders and pretty fast as well. But.... I'm waiting for the big update...

Doesn't make noise isn't that useful when the user has to connect external boxes that make noise instead of adding storage internally.

Still, adding stuff internally just builds up heat that needs to be pushed out, thus increasing fan speed, thus making more noise. :)
OK, simplifying but in the end it comes down to this really.

If you don't ever need the external gear, it's an incredible machine though.

What's the ETA on that?

Broadwell, or, wait for Skylake/Purley?

yeah, purley. Intel's already put out their refreshes on the 2011-3 socket, next move will be Purley with TB3 sometime in 2016, maybe even 2017. Apple needs to put out a stopgap refresh or a price drop.

Nah, early next year with Broadwell-EP.
Skylake-EP won't be here before 2017.
And nMP will probably be stuck with 1P Kaby Lake, not Purley. Purley is for 2P and up.

I just really hope they drop the trashcan design for something with a little more expandability. Would love a new Mac, but refuse to buy something I need to plug external hard drives all over to expand.

Once you try a black Mac Pro, you won't go back. The inconvenience of needing external storage is easily managed when you realize how fast, quiet, and portable it is. I hope the next generation of Mac Pro's retain the form-factor. Its excellent, and I was once a skeptic, too.

I'm fairly happy with the latest MP but if they went back to a design with the latest tech but more internal expandability I'd go back in a heartbeat.

I wish the iMac was fast machine but the top notch i7 is still more than half slower than my 2010 5,1 12core macpro! What a big shame :(( I would love a 'free' 5k screen.

You are looking at synthetic multicore benchmarks like Geekbench, they don't reflect real world performance in most apps. We have a Photoshop benchmark forum in the Mac Pro section. The quad core Skylake iMac is just as fast as the quickest 12 core Westmere Mac Pro. In apps with less threading a Skylake would be a lot faster.

Depends on the app. In Logic the extra cores generally can offer a big boost in performance.

16 pcie lanes versus 40 in the E5?

I'm suggesting using the E3's instead of the similar in performance and price Core i7's.

When you need more I/O, for driving GPUs and disk I/O and network I/O, the E5's are obviously superior-- no argument. Just what you need for a Mac Pro.

Do you mean for iMacs? Sorry, I thought this was still about mac pro.

You have a point. I just like the E-3 line, but, it doesn't really fit in Apple's current product lines.

Now that OS-X 10.11.02 has been released (today). Any more info on this subject? Are the references still there, any changes etc.

I really hope this comes out soon.... my boss has been wanting to upgrade out 2011 iMacs to these but I keep telling him "just wait a month more, you might regret it."

Hi All,

Does anybody know if there are still indications of a possible updated Mac Pro (in the most recent version of OS X 10.11.4 Public Beta 1) ??

the E5 V4 chips are scheduled to ship any day now so i would hope we might see a refresh very soon.
i strongly doubt however that it will be the massive update people want it to be. Faster storage, V4 cpus, better graphics. that's about it.

Thanks for the update. That's all I needed so looking good.

A re-birth of the classic Mac Pro does not appear to be on Apple's radar and hence I've given up on that dream.

hahahah I can only laugh at this, right now!

It's been two years since Apple launched its radically redesigned Mac Pro, but the professional-level workstation has not seen any updates since that time despite the availability of upgraded versions of many of the components used in the machine. We may be getting closer to an update, however, as Pike's Universum has discovered a reference to a new Mac code name of "AAPLJ951" within OS X El Capitan.

The identity of the Mac corresponding to that code name is not explicitly revealed in OS X, but Pike points to the similar AAPLJ90 code name for the current Mac Pro as a reason to believe this new machine is a Mac Pro.

Looking toward possible specs for the next Mac Pro, it seems likely it will run on Xeon-branded Broadwell EP chips and include significantly faster graphics based on AMD's Fury platform, along with faster memory and storage and perhaps Thunderbolt 3 connectivity involving a partial shift to USB-C connectivity.

Too bad Apple doesn't offer a mini-Pro with the Xeon E3. Compare:

http://ark.intel.com/compare/88195,88177

they do, its called an iMac. Xeon E3 is nothing but an server-grade i7 with ECC support. you could in theory put a E3 in your iMac and put ECC memory in it (if such a thing existed in laptop RAM) and it would work just fine. ECC support is processor-based, there's nothing special in the motherboard required to run it. Only Registered/ECC memory requires special motherboards.
