Sadly due to the limitations of flash memory as it stands now 32gb is the absolute limit. This is precisely why I think apple will include a micro sd slot or even better a full size sd slot. Not likely cause the form factor would need to be changed. And we all know how much apple hates making things bigger lol. But here's how it would work. Apple would if they are using a micro sd slot to run apps in addition to music and vids will do exactly the same thing the wii does. It will add a copy/drm protection to all installed apps on the sd card which like apple does bes... LOL prevent piracy rofl. I would also love louder clearer speakers and most importantly but sadly not happening till years from now AN OLED SCREEN WOOT ^^. Add a thicker form factor and ssd drives for REAL storage on top of all this and we got ourselves another device that we kick ourselves for not waiting for cause the apps are so pretty now lol.

you are talking some big $$ for an ssd drive. How much does a 120-128gb. cost? like 300 itself. I doubt it will be in the 4th gen, and maybe not even the 5th gen. However, flash memory is coming down in price like a rocket with no fuel. Apple should be incorporating an ssd into their devices within--Im guessing--5-6 years. Mabey just a few years. ssd's are kinda new technology and right now, they are at their highest price.

for anyone who dosent know what and ssd (solid state drive) is, they make them the same sizes as hard drives, but they use flash memory, so absolutely no moving parts to break, and much faster speed

A 32GB for sure if the price drops at least $100 and GPS is added. If not both of those, I'll have to put some thought into it before buying.

Not sure, right now I still have my 16GB 1G touch with OS 3.0 and I'm perfectly fine with it. I'll have to wait to see what they add to it.

All of you are saying examples of iphone specs: camera, video, gps . . . Apple needs to give people a reason to buy the iphone instead of the ipod touch (besides the phone). I doubt any of these will be included.

Also - just thought of this - if verizon or sprint (or both) ever get included in the iphone, this will be the true "ipod killer". No one would have a reason to have an ipod touch! I sure wouldn't! Verizon's friends and family plan is the only reason I'm stuck with a touch instead of iphone.

Not 100% true as in some country's like here in AU you can not buy unlocked iphones (that i know of) and there is only one provider that has a prepaid iphone and its 700$+ for the 8GB 3g so most people i know here have got the ipod touch because of this. Also some people do not need the phone bit ether.

Actually they could make it work. The macbook air is realitivly just as cheep with an ssd drive as it's hdd counterpart. So yeah, it could indeed happen. It may not be the blazing fast awsomeness we would love but it could indeed be done. Personally I've never owned an ipod as they're either extremely restrictive *see my obvious above posts* or the space is limited. The touch was a freaking savior until I heard those stupid fated words *8gb 16gb 32gb*. Usless for someone with not only alot of content but someone who would most certainly be addicted to their app store. So if they add more space this will be my first ipod and the first device that will make me cry in the store when verizon announces they'll get the iphone and all the apple guinesses push me out before I can return it LOL.

I defintitely am. 64GB
No flat back. If it comes in plastic, black and white only. It will probably get a camera. If it does get one it won't be thinner than the first generation. It will probably have the same 3D Graphics chip, ram, and processor as the iPhone 3G S.

EDIT: THERE WILL BE NO GLOWING APPLE LOGO.

But the logo, it's so shinny and pretty. I'm heading towards it's bright glow and.... and..... and I just lost my soul lol. like I said, unless apple can come up with a miracle there will be no 64gb model. I'm thinking the new touch should be out in a few weeks to co-inside with the 3gs.

why does everybody keep asking for a glowing apple logo. GOD its so annoying whats the purpose of it? and the ipod touch is thin as it is.

however i do look forward to the new ipod touch. with 16gb as its low end i can finally get that 32gb

I will buy this net touch if there is
1. Hard drive sport, (Disk Use)
2. Fire wire (Ok this will not happen)
3. A video\photo cam
Upload to youtube
4.GPS
5.Microphone
6. Compass
7. Wireless syncing\Bluetooth Syncing

And some ramdom thing i think would be cool
A macintosh 128k emulator
Iwork - Iphone should have this
Find my Ipod (Taking from find my iphone)
And a unacorn that makes you fly............. Yea that is never going to happen,
And A moth Killer, ( There is a moth stalking my computer screen and its making me mad....)
And some tempture nob so it can read the temp,

Okay, sorry mate but you're utterly wrong on this one. The new iPhone has 32Gb of storage, yes? Well that means it's got a single 32Gb memory chip inside. The iPod Touch uses TWO memory chips to the one of the iPhone so Apple can quite easily give us a 64Gb Touch in September the same way it's always given double the capacity of the iPhone in the last couple of years.

The touch will, I'm almost certain, be out in September the same way it's always been done. It's an iPod after all and gets refreshed the same time as the rest of the iPod lineup around the time the kids go back to school and the build up to the christmas season begins. As for wanting support for more formats, downloaded videos etc etc... god no. If you want that, buy an Archos or one of the many many other PMP's that work that way. Apple's shown that's NOT what the general public want out of their media players and I really hope they don't change that. Yes, I'm one of those geeks that likes iTunes and has no problem with working with it. Of course that might be because all my media is legit and either ripped straight from the CD into iTunes or downloaded from the iTunes store...

As to the original topic, yep I'm hoping to replace my ageing 16Gb 1st gen Touch with a shiny new 32Gb 3rd gen providing it's got the guts from the new iPhone. GPS would be nice but not a deal breaker, camera would be a bonus but more-or-less irrelevant for me and more battery life would be very welcome indeed. That said I won't be first in line when they're released owing to a long long history of getting bitten by first batch issues on Apple products.

I havent followed the history of ipod releases, so maybe one of you guys can answer this...

When in september does apple usually release ipods, beginning or near the end of september?

I'm trying to gauge a return/exchange type thingy..

No. It won't be out in a few weeks. It comes out in September like every year. And 64GB will happen. The iPhone 3G S only has one slot for NAND flash ships, it uses one 32GB. The iPod touch has two, currently it is 4x4, 8x8, and 16x16. When the new iPod touch comes out it will have 32x32.

...I am hoping to buy it

for me, it depends...there needs to be some improvements.

I think 64GB or 80GB would be great, in addition to a camera/videocamera, faster processor, better graphics chipset, better speaker, mic...and maybe, but not likely, and SD slot.

A camera and larger HD would be nice for starters...then I'll take a mic, faster processor & better graphics...

I am begrudgling having to return the iPhone 3GS I received on the 19th because of "No Service" at work. I can't even get 1 bar with AT&T inside a building I spend 9+ hours a day in. Back to Verizon I will go with fingers crossed that next year we will see an iPhone on VZW.

I think we will. I will be waiting in line...

My hopes are maybe a possible release of a Verizon iPhone 4G in mid to late 2010. They have to adopt LTE by then as well...

The internet will be so fast...

...that is just a dream though, it could be till 2012 till will see Verizon and Apple releasing an iPhone, who knows?

I would bet Apple is trying to end this AT&T contract in 2010 - they have been smellin' possible moola coming from all other carriers for almost 2 years now...:p

I have a gen1 touch but whether I will buy a gen3 is unknown. It depends on what it is. The gen1 with os 3.0 is pretty complete and usable..
If this new Ipod has the same screen size as the current then I see no reason to upgrade. The extra stuff is nice but the primary feature I insist on is a larger screen - not so large that it won't still fit in a shirt pocket but it does have to be larger. So I just might pass on a gen3 ipod in September and look for something entirely different in January, say an Ipad instead.
But that's just me.

My iPod Touch G1 is basically a 'netbook' for me (music, games, facebook, twitter, feeds, email, web) but now I am eagerly awaiting the G3.

I hope the G3 will feature a built-in microphone and more storage, but a camera and GPS would be a nice bonus :D

In the long term I still believe the 'Touch' is destined to be an iPhone without the cellular hardware.

No 80GB. You, like a lot of other people need to learn something. iPod touch doesn't use a hard drive, it uses a flash chips. It WILL NOT get a hard drive at the next upgrade. So since it uses flash it goes 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, etc, etc. There for there won't be an 80GB. Better graphics and processor are almost guaranteed, along with more ram. A camera is very likely.

...then I'll take a mic...

There won't be a built in mic, it is more than likely to come with the Apple earphones with remote and mic.

Basically.
