Location off

Brightness 50% with Auto-Brightness on
3G on
wifi on for about 2 hours while I listened to pandora
played games and downloaded 3 new apps
bunch of other stuff

is that all in one session or spread out over the three days?

That's a good battery life but, depends on the use as every time the phone is taken off the lock screen it constitutes as being 'usage'.

Update:
Same settings, but with just 1 Push account. About 3 hours are calls over 3G with good reception. Wtf!

Not impressed :\

Settings:
Brightness ~ 55% with auto on
Wifi: off
3G/reception: uninterrupted
Notifications: on
Location services: on, but I close out the apps that use them right after
Mail: 2 Push accounts, manual fetch

Could it be the dual Push accounts? I've only been using it for about 1.5 hours of calls, no music, no Pandora, no GPS, light Safari, Yelp and NY Times.

By the way, what is the Apple store exchange policy?

I don't think this is normal... Anyone have any ideas?

Bluetooth/WiFi are off during the day. I work in an office for 8 hours with no wifi. Brightness is up pretty high. But I don't use the phone a lot while i'm working. Just some light web browsing. I do have two Exchange accounts configured. You think that is the problem?

I think mine is about the same, if not worse. See my settings here

I wonder if I should disable the Push... that would be a big let down. I can barely make it through the day on a charge.

I suggest leaving your phone on overnight but in Airplane mode and check how much the % has come down by the next morning.

Honda, what are your settings (brightness, Wifi/BT, notifications, location, push, etc.)?

Um.. brightness is like 25%? I turn auto-brightness on.
Wifi on for like downloading a couple of apps and browse the app store.
Notifications are off, except for Textnow App.

Thanks for sharing. How many Push accounts?

Push are off, mail set to manually, but that day, I hardly was using Textnow app so all those battery draining seem to be from browsing the app store and downloading them. I also play Ninjump for like 15 mins or so.

People with amazing battery life is your usage that spread out over the day or are you on your phone for more than 20 minutes at a time?? How do you use your phone

Again I ask, are you guys like charging to 100% then throwing it in a corner and come back the next day to make one 20 minute call then put it back in a corner for two more days? Or how is it being used?

Is this regular?:

What a lot of people on this forum don't realize is that battery performance varies.

Yes, there are a lot of things to consider, e.g., the brightness of your screen, how much time you spend on the internet using 3G, playing games using 3G, etc. The truth is, however, that the phone will vary its calculation.

Take for instance a brand new phone. You charge it up and it is at 100%. The truth is, that phone cannot predict how the phone is going to be used because it has not been used. Therefore, if the phone shows a standby time of of less than 7 minutes, that is normal considering the phone has never been used.

What about older phones like most of the phones people here on the forums have? Well, it also depends. As I am sure many of you know, not everyone is going to have the same identical battery performance. The reason for this is obvious: we all use the phones differently. Aside from taking into consideration how we use our phones, we also have to take into consideration how we charge them.

Some of us charge our phone when we get home because it is dead, others charge it every second of the day. It truly depends and varies so much. .

For those that are arguing that they should take their phone in because it does not meet the specific requirements as set forth by apple on their website, go back and read footnote 2 on top of that Battery and Performance so that you can see that Apple themselves says that performance varies.

Granted, there are a few that do have defective batteries and I have seen and heard this. There are batteries that serious have charging issues. 100% charged and then they drain at a really rapid rate.

Overall, battery performance truly varies as I have been saying throughout this post, which is truly the recurring theme and something many should understand.

Unfortunately, I can't really do that. I rely on my phone for emergency situations because of a family member, and if I'm needed to respond to an alarm at work.

I got a lot more use out of my phone today. I did some browsing/YouTube over lunch, and I was at Starbucks for a good hour playing a game and downloading an album from iTunes. The only thing I've changed is how I charged the phone. I charged it via USB from my MacBook Pro. I think we have some electrical issues at the house, and it's affecting my iPhone. I'm going to charge it again over USB and see what happens. Attached is a screenshot from my usage today.

Is it good practice to turn off the phone instead of leaving it in Airplane mode (if you're setting an alarm) overnight?

Can anyone tell me how the "usage" stat is calculated? My phone showed me 8h10min usage and 1 day standby before the battery died. However, at about 7h usage I got suspicious as I didn't think I had used my phone that much. So over the next while I periodically checked just the usage stat. I only did that with my phone until it died at around 8h10min usage. ie. 1h10min usage was gained with no actual usage...

I don't run push email, just hourly fetch and notifications for Whatsapp...

Any explanation?

as far as i know its whenever your screen is on.

Usage: 8 Hours, 1 Minute
Standby: 3 Days, 10 Hours
Remaining battery: 1%

Brightness: 30-35%
Mobile data: always on
3G: only activated when needed (picture albums, maps, etc)
Location services: always on
Notifications: always on
Mail: manual (prefer not to be notified till I check)
WiFi: only when home

Usage: About one hour of music. Remaining usage was between gaming, surfing, FB, Twitter (picture uploads), photo-taking, maps (for travel routing with GPS on), instant messaging, reading (ebook, RSS; about 1.5 hours total), remote control, alarms, etc.

During this period, I saw that push notifications use very little amount of battery. Generally, I also find that the iPhone 4 battery does not drain when in standby (locked). I have been waking up to find the battery percentage to be the same as when I went to sleep (about 7-8 hours). Settings are as above, but with WiFI turned on instead of 3G.

Skype users: Be sure Skype is not running in the multitask bar unless you really need it to be (version 2.1.1 as of writing). It easily depletes the battery by 15% over 7-8 hours of standby. During a 4-hour Skype call, the battery was down by 30-40%. The usage drain is fairly reasonable, I think, but the multitask drain is not. During the days when I had left Skype in the multitask bar, I thought I had a bad battery. Hope Skype fixes this soon. For now, I stay on IM (push notification), and then moving over to Skype if needed.

If you have closed all apps in the multitask bar and the battery is draining in standby (locked), you should try powering down the phone (without holding down the home button) and powering it back up again. This always helps my iPhone to get back to ultra-efficient standby.

I also find that toggling between WiFi and 3G goes a long way. WiFi enabled when home, and 3G enabled only when I need the speed while on the move.

Just doing this battery run for curiosity. From now, I'll be charging it when the battery hits red, and also, a full cycle recharge once a month. Don't think I want to worry about the battery too much too. My own 'strategy': just use it with no worry till it hits red — then, turn 3G off, empty the multitask bar (maybe even power on/off), and it should keep me happy with music for the trip home. ;)

Lastly, I think standby time is meaningless. You can practically keep the iPhone on standby for days and days before you start running it down from more than 90% to nothing for many hours. Or more commonly, you may use it for about 2 hours on the first day, and let it be on standby for 7-8 hours (when you sleep) without it losing any battery at all, and then another 2 hours of usage the next day, and may let it be on standby for another 12 hours, and so on.
