This was pretty close to my dream Linux system in 1999, from the hottest rising star in the business - VA Research! 🤣 Tough sell for the boss, that was a lot of money for a small arts organization (bls inflation calculator says $8900 in 2025 dollars). This replaced a cheap Dell PC from CompUSA (remember them?) that I installed Red Hat on myself a couple years earlier. This quote is from my original 1999 notes
And here it was on a desk in the corner of my office on 4/14/1999. Sorry, hope you'll forgive me for not having a proper "about this Linux" screen.
That was kind of a boutique system from a hot company, but it was great, had Red Hat pre-installed and all the peripherals. They custom built their boxes for Linux, which was unusual back then.
Here's the full spreadsheet, less RAM in the others, no UPS, no pre-installed Linux.
I always loved that UI. I used Linux for 20 years, before moving to Apple gear, and I always ran the WindowMaker window manager because of that look. Beautiful! Apple really needs to release a version of macOS with the NeXTSTEP UI.
