But I fear, that all my white c2d iMacs with Lion will become forced to obsolescense, if the latest version of MS Remote Desktop 8 should be refused by the Server ... (that RDP8-client version for Lion isn't even available from the AppStore anymore)

Does Mountain Lion support a newer version of the RDP client?

You can run the latest version of Windows 10 on the white iMacs. If they're virtually only used as RDP clients, does their OS matter?

Just say no to planned obsolescense. :)

I'd also like to use them also a Mac, since DEVONthink-server let me search my databases throughout all the other white Macs within the network (which would also be possible using any PPC as a client for searching the DEVONthink databases).
But sorry to hitchhike this thread with off-topic stuff ... Let' continue on https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/early-intel-trash-or-treasure-macbook-pro-2008.2122634/

Finally booted and was able to get this screenshot.

EDIT: Was finally able to run Geekbench successfully and got 1214. 1.25 got me around 1060.

A combination of heavy rain, boredom and too much time on my hands ended up in an impulse buy: My second tangerine Clamshell. Pleased to see that RAM was already maxed out. Tried to install Mac OSX 1.2 on it but the installer kept freezing and I didn’t feel like troubleshooting, so here’s MacOS 9.0.4 instead.

I b0rked my original install by trying to utilize the Fienix repositories on Lubuntu 16.04, so here is my new and improved "about this mac". Mac mini g4, over clocked to 1.5ghz w/1gb ram and original 40gb spinner. Ditched LXDE for IceWM as it only uses 104mb ram booting to desktop. :)

You should add that wallpaper to the wallpaper thread.

Fry half a city with this puppy. :D

An iBook G3 500 Dual USB that I recently came across whilst scanning the local classifieds and when I saw the price: £10 GBP, I didn't hesitate to swoop in and grab it. Spotlight, Dashboard and shadows have all been disabled. I'd love to swap out the 10GB HDD but I do not relish the work that will be involved to dismantle it.

I'm using SAMBA (with varying degrees of success) to access media files and DVDs from a WinBox that functions as a repurposed PVR. VLC struggles somewhat with DVD playback: even with frame skipping enabled and I suspect that's because the earlier versions lack the acceleration enjoyed by Apple's DVD player. Considering my avatar and name, I thought that the viewing material was quite apt. ;)

"That's it, man. Game over, man. Game over!" :D

I too didn't relish opening up my 600Mhz version but as the HDD died I had no choice - it wasn't so bad but keeping all the screws separate was a pain and there was an awkward support bracket over the optical drive.
Maybe try MPlayer for playback?

Going in there? "You can count me out." :D

I'll study the iFixit guide and perhaps one day soon, I'll take the plunge. Out of curiosity, how easy would it be to use a SATA spinner or SSD instead? MPlayer is my #1 choice for playing many video formats on the iBook but I've been unable to get it to work with the VIDEO_TS directories on DVDs, especially if they're protected with CSS - as are most commercial DVDs. VLC has much more functionality in this area.

Size matters not. 😄

Yet another scan through the local classifieds yielded a Mac Mini G4 with 1.25 Ghz, 512 MB RAM and a stock 40 GB HDD for £15 GBP. The seller and I ended up having a conversation about retro gaming, Apple's ever tightening forced obsolescence strategies and that was longer than our discussion regarding the machine itself. 🙂

From what I've seen over the past couple of days, within its obvious constraints, the Mini isn't bad at all and the design is definitely appealing and lands itself quite well to a variety of scenarios. I'll have to see if I have a compatible 1 GB module in my pile of parts. How easy/practical is it to replace the HDD with a SATA spinner or even an SSD?

Time to update my signature...

I see you're using MPlayer Extended - have you tried the Mplayer scripts/applets I put together? Dropping the GUI saves some CPU and there are extra parameters used to hard drop frames?
It's here contained in the TonVid Youtube package:

Coreplayer is better but can glitch on some formats.

I haven't done anything major with the Mini yet. MPE has been the height of my activities. :D

I've checked out the thread and I'm very much interested. From what I read, with your scripts and applets, you can enjoy high quality YouTube streaming and downloading on a G4?

720p is very impressive! I didn't think that it would be possible. I tried a couple of my 1080 DVB-T2 recordings and the Mini unsurprisingly couldn't hack them but 720p is possible?

The whole process has changed since then as Youtube changes it's API almost on a monthly basis, the downloader/streamer there does work but the youtube-dl/MPlayer interchange is slow - SMTube reworked by @Lastic on here is vastly superior but unfortunately stands at Leopard only at the moment.
The PPC Media Center is still great at streaming/downloading too.

Yes, 720P is possible on your machine with Mplayer and Coreplayer - some 1080P will work too but with lots of frame dropping.
