I never called to complain or returned my iphone 4 because i have no problems what so ever.

I've been all throughout the Chicagoland area, suburbs, downtown etc. I get better reception than i did with my 3GS. Consistently faster data, up (obviously) and down.

Better voice quality, and zero dropped calls.

Same with me. I'll have a free case anyway please.

Post your emails to steve jobs/apple.

I saw your press conference today. Here are my thoughts.

Yes, certain products from other mobile companies will lose signal under "death Grip" conditions. The things you failed to mention was often times their signal goes back because those phones increase the output power to the antenna. It even mentions this sometimes in Nokia manuals I have seen. The side effect is lower battery life and increased radiation. This would all have to be approved by the FCC and various other regulatory bodies in the markets you sell the iPhone in and i don't know if this is even a solution for you either. At any rate your engineers have of course briefed you on this if you didn't already know..

The issue with the iphone is NOT the death grip. It is in fact the signal is severely diminished (anandtech found -24 dBm to be the worst case) with the use of a SINGLE FINGER over one spot in the lower left corner of the phone that separates the antennas. If this was really the issue, "death gripping" with your right hand instead of your left should result in dropped bars; it does not. Furthermore, you failed to show ANY phone on the market that currently has such a flaw in its design. The theme of your "antennagate" press event today was that all phones experience this; this is disingenuous at best and outright lying at worst.

Apple today, to "fix" this, offered a free bumper/case and a refund to all except purchasers of 3rd party cases. This doesn't change that under the case is a defective product. For one, I don't really like using a bumper. Apple spends all this time to design a beautiful looking product and you want me to hide it?? I love the design of iPhone 4. I look at mine everyday for a few mins just moving the phone around in my hands to see just to look at it. Nothing on the market comes close and nothing in the android pipeline does either. When it came to decision to upgrade my old iPhone 3G to the new iPhone 4, iPhone 4, with the speed, display and battery life honestly made it a no brainer.

My bumper (which I hate using) just makes the phone harder to pull out of my pocket and hides the nice design. I can't help the feeling that its a defective product though. Its like "oh its perfect, but if you put your finger here you can loose all signal".

You also put some spin on your answer to the questions that were seeking to know if you were going to change the manufacturing process of the iPhone that would reduce or completely negate this issue. Strangely enough you also put a deadline of sept 30th on getting free bumper/cases. Is the smarter among us suppose to realize, return the phone and buy a new one in september if you don't want the antenna issue?

I am in a rock and a hard place between returning my phone and not. I like it, however I don't like the antenna issue. I want a phone that is perfect.. Thats why I got the iPhone in the first place. I feel like there is an * on the iPhone; "In order to not loose signal, you will need one of these cases".

Let me explain a bit more, if I don't return my phone and find out later that there is a redesign that fixes this, that would make me very upset if my currently phone was not to be replaced with the new model that does work without the "touch of death" issue. This is sadly something the press failed to ask you as well.

Post your emails to apple/steve jobs, either in praise or dissent!

I have one and agree with you about it being the best build and design of any case - and I have a number of them. Closest to it is the Solo FX that I had on my 3gs, but that doesn't have the stainless stell buttons, etc...

have you even SEEN a bumper? Its molded plastic, ringed in rubber, perfectly cut to the phone, with out a doubt the MOST ACCURATE cuts I have ever seen on a case, and I've bought a lot

And to top it all off, real stainless steel buttons on the case itself cover the sleep/wake and volume rockers

worth $30? maybe not
Cheap? Definitely not.
It has the best build and design of any case I've seen

I mean the thing that concerns me is, if they can't fix it with software, and release a hardware update that doesn't have the issue, I would obviously want that phone.

Now this would be a different matter if apple said they were going to do a hardware fix before july 24 or 25 (when the first iphones were sold and the 30 day period began). It would then be consumer choice as if they wanted to wait.

If apple doesn't and just say ... sorry ... well thats kind of BS if they don't replace the previous version without the defect.

I mean basically if they don't come out with a fix, the iPhone 4 is just going to carry a *, "need a case to not loose signal".

I experience dropped calls from my office when touching the magic spot so I am returning mine next week and will wait until after September 30th to see what Apple does. I'm betting that Apple is slipping a design change into their manufacturing process after that date, if not I'll keep using my 3GS until the iPhone 5 comes out. If I am right and Apple comes out with an updated iPhone 4 after 9/30 those who have the original iPhone 4 will have a model that will be totally devalued and an industry joke.

Apple's touting of it's "state of the art" antenna lab is stupid, if it's so state of the art how did they design such a flawed antenna and put it into production? I have no doubt that the iPhone 4 will go down in the history of iPhones as a beautiful phone that was technically flawed.

It's not at all like saying that. The phone loses signal when I hold it in the only way comfortable to myself(a lefty).
I saw a signature here that summed it up best
Patient to Steve "It hurts when I breathe"
Steve to patient "just avoid breathing that way."

I'm a lefty too!!! The whiners won though, you guys get a free lunch! So it's all good.

Did anyone see the press conference? Other phones have the SAME issue. Is everyone going to go to RIM, HTC and demand a free case? Is the media going to get their asses to fix the "issue".

The op is right on the money. People just want to complain about nothing. Apple has done everything to help complainers. They offered full refund, now bumpers. And as we speak they are still flying off the shelves. It's a great phone and the best os out right now.

Say 'no' to the free bumper. If you get a refund to your Apple ID, write a personal check to Apple, go to a store, and hand it to the manager.

That's what I'll do.

I will be using a case anyway so it doesn't matter but I just looked at how I actually hold the phone during a call and I don't hold it near the antenna, and that's when I'm not using my BT headset which again nulls the issue for me.

You are basing your comments on what you have read on the internet ? There are a lot of people here with iPhones that work without a case. So making a statement that the iPhone requires a case to work is not true.

Besides, why wouldn't you want to protect your $600 phone ?

Agreed!

For all the hoopla about this phone being such a design revolution, it should be able to function without a bumper, case, etc. I currently don't have a case on my 3G and don't plan on getting one.

Make a phone that works! Not a phone that works with an accessory, I don't care if the accessory is free or not.

I like my phones without a case, now they're saying you need a case for the iPhone to work as it should.

Why would you say my iPhone 4 is devalued and an industry joke ? Currently, I have no problems with my phone. I have even test a couple of my friends iPhones and there is no issue there as well. The way I see it, my iphone is more valuable as it is an original iPhone 4 that works as it is supposed to as opposed to an updated one that will be devalued because of the # of phones out there at that time.

I wonder how many people will be taking their free bumper and selling them on eBay at inflated prices ?

I'm pretty elated with Apple's reaction. My phone is fine and unaffected by dropped calls, plus I already have a bumper. So I get another free case, or a refund, and my lovely iPhone 4. Happy camper :)

It is still not an issue. The only reason for offering the free cases is to shut up all the complainers out there. He also stated that if you don't like the phone with the bumper, then return it.

End result...... Either enjoy the phone or return it and stop complaining about the phone everyday.

I didn't see any data?? All I heard was a CEO trying to defend his defective product. I find it sad that people on here believe every word that he says. Remember a few weeks back when there wasn't an issue? Now Apple are giving out free cases. Wake up and smell the coffee pal.

+1.

The iPhone 4 is simply amazing.

How do i get my bumper refund?

Have they talked about how this will work or do we just ask for a rebate through the online store (if you bought online)? I mean if i had bought it in store i would have gone there this weekend for a refund but are they even doing it in store yet? I have heard they are offering free bumpers to people who go to the genius bar having problems.

Go to apple.com but you will have to wait till later this week. They will have further instructions how to obtain a refund. There is a little serial number in the Apple retail store receipt to verify your purchased. Or if you purchased online, there is your web order number to verify your purchased.

If you purchased third party (ebay/craigslist) without receipt, you are probably screwed for the refund.

Call Apple tomorrow morning first thing and demand a refund right now. If they blow you off or tell you to wait, demand to escalate it. If they say they can't keep demanding. Do not get off the phone until you can verify a refund on your credit or debit card showing from your bank.

That's a little rough, no? Why not just wait and see what process they come up w/ and than rant/rave if it somehow excludes you?

This is what I just did. Seems easier than waiting.

Just got an email from Apple saying that my bumper will be sent free of charge. This is not what I wanted. I wanted the option of returning the bumper in case any of the "third-party" cases were nicer options.

Oh well.
