I never called to complain or returned my iphone 4 because i have no problems what so ever.
I've been all throughout the Chicagoland area, suburbs, downtown etc. I get better reception than i did with my 3GS. Consistently faster data, up (obviously) and down.
Better voice quality, and zero dropped calls.
wrong.
not a bumper. another case. might want to wait a little before jumping the gun next time
Free case, not free bumper
the bumper scratches your phone as it is so have a skin or get a different case
I saw your press conference today. Here are my thoughts.
Yes, certain products from other mobile companies will lose signal under "death Grip" conditions. The things you failed to mention was often times their signal goes back because those phones increase the output power to the antenna. It even mentions this sometimes in Nokia manuals I have seen. The side effect is lower battery life and increased radiation. This would all have to be approved by the FCC and various other regulatory bodies in the markets you sell the iPhone in and i don't know if this is even a solution for you either. At any rate your engineers have of course briefed you on this if you didn't already know..
The issue with the iphone is NOT the death grip. It is in fact the signal is severely diminished (anandtech found -24 dBm to be the worst case) with the use of a SINGLE FINGER over one spot in the lower left corner of the phone that separates the antennas. If this was really the issue, "death gripping" with your right hand instead of your left should result in dropped bars; it does not. Furthermore, you failed to show ANY phone on the market that currently has such a flaw in its design. The theme of your "antennagate" press event today was that all phones experience this; this is disingenuous at best and outright lying at worst.
Apple today, to "fix" this, offered a free bumper/case and a refund to all except purchasers of 3rd party cases. This doesn't change that under the case is a defective product. For one, I don't really like using a bumper. Apple spends all this time to design a beautiful looking product and you want me to hide it?? I love the design of iPhone 4. I look at mine everyday for a few mins just moving the phone around in my hands to see just to look at it. Nothing on the market comes close and nothing in the android pipeline does either. When it came to decision to upgrade my old iPhone 3G to the new iPhone 4, iPhone 4, with the speed, display and battery life honestly made it a no brainer.
My bumper (which I hate using) just makes the phone harder to pull out of my pocket and hides the nice design. I can't help the feeling that its a defective product though. Its like "oh its perfect, but if you put your finger here you can loose all signal".
You also put some spin on your answer to the questions that were seeking to know if you were going to change the manufacturing process of the iPhone that would reduce or completely negate this issue. Strangely enough you also put a deadline of sept 30th on getting free bumper/cases. Is the smarter among us suppose to realize, return the phone and buy a new one in september if you don't want the antenna issue?
I am in a rock and a hard place between returning my phone and not. I like it, however I don't like the antenna issue. I want a phone that is perfect.. Thats why I got the iPhone in the first place. I feel like there is an * on the iPhone; "In order to not loose signal, you will need one of these cases".
Let me explain a bit more, if I don't return my phone and find out later that there is a redesign that fixes this, that would make me very upset if my currently phone was not to be replaced with the new model that does work without the "touch of death" issue. This is sadly something the press failed to ask you as well.
have you even SEEN a bumper? Its molded plastic, ringed in rubber, perfectly cut to the phone, with out a doubt the MOST ACCURATE cuts I have ever seen on a case, and I've bought a lot
And to top it all off, real stainless steel buttons on the case itself cover the sleep/wake and volume rockers
worth $30? maybe not
Cheap? Definitely not.
It has the best build and design of any case I've seen
It's not at all like saying that. The phone loses signal when I hold it in the only way comfortable to myself(a lefty).
I saw a signature here that summed it up best
Patient to Steve "It hurts when I breathe"
Steve to patient "just avoid breathing that way."
The op is right on the money. People just want to complain about nothing. Apple has done everything to help complainers. They offered full refund, now bumpers. And as we speak they are still flying off the shelves. It's a great phone and the best os out right now.
Agreed!
For all the hoopla about this phone being such a design revolution, it should be able to function without a bumper, case, etc. I currently don't have a case on my 3G and don't plan on getting one.
Make a phone that works! Not a phone that works with an accessory, I don't care if the accessory is free or not.
I like my phones without a case, now they're saying you need a case for the iPhone to work as it should.
I experience dropped calls from my office when touching the magic spot so I am returning mine next week and will wait until after September 30th to see what Apple does. I'm betting that Apple is slipping a design change into their manufacturing process after that date, if not I'll keep using my 3GS until the iPhone 5 comes out. If I am right and Apple comes out with an updated iPhone 4 after 9/30 those who have the original iPhone 4 will have a model that will be totally devalued and an industry joke.
Apple's touting of it's "state of the art" antenna lab is stupid, if it's so state of the art how did they design such a flawed antenna and put it into production? I have no doubt that the iPhone 4 will go down in the history of iPhones as a beautiful phone that was technically flawed.
I didn't see any data?? All I heard was a CEO trying to defend his defective product. I find it sad that people on here believe every word that he says. Remember a few weeks back when there wasn't an issue? Now Apple are giving out free cases. Wake up and smell the coffee pal.
It is still not an issue. The only reason for offering the free cases is to shut up all the complainers out there. He also stated that if you don't like the phone with the bumper, then return it.
End result...... Either enjoy the phone or return it and stop complaining about the phone everyday.
Have they talked about how this will work or do we just ask for a rebate through the online store (if you bought online)? I mean if i had bought it in store i would have gone there this weekend for a refund but are they even doing it in store yet? I have heard they are offering free bumpers to people who go to the genius bar having problems.
Call Apple tomorrow morning first thing and demand a refund right now. If they blow you off or tell you to wait, demand to escalate it. If they say they can't keep demanding. Do not get off the phone until you can verify a refund on your credit or debit card showing from your bank.
This is what I just did. Seems easier than waiting.
