@tr0jan: It would be interesting to see how it looks when you are done with the setup. Please do post some snaps in the dark with the TV on/off.

first of all: those philips lightstrips are horrible.. they cost 40 euros and have no power! send'em back to amazon..

then i bought the lights from ikea.. really good ones! the cool thing is you can change the colour.. the pics are not very good - too much white.. in real there is more colour..

Updated my home theater today...replaced my Apple TV with a Mac Mini+Plex, and I'm loving it.

<snip>

I've been trying to figure out what I was going to do for my system and your post has solidified it for me. That looks great!

One question, could I just use a firewire drive/drives attached directly to the mini in lieu of having a server?

Thanks again and great setup.

Thanks! Oh yeah absolutely, attached drives would be perfectly fine. Easier, actually, because then you wouldn't have to have a script to make sure network drives are mounted before Plex starts :D

Great news, I'm excited to start this project. I've been fumbling around using an XBOX with XBMC on it, but I've grown increasingly unsatisfied with it. Mini here I come!

temporary setup, i need to pick up a stand for my components and clean up the wires.

Looks awesome !! How many Dioder (I guess thats the name of the IKEA LED strips) stips are you using for this effect. I'm curious because as far as I remember all LED's glow with the same color and it costs $70+ for one strip

I would like to do that with my setup. Can you take pictures of the back? Are their instructions that come with the packaging or instructions online? I'd like to do this with my dorm setup.

yepp, thats right. im using this Dioder. They are pricey but i the "cheapest" solution i found.. the Dioder costs 59 Euros (i think they will cost in USA 59 Dollars) but it has 4 Strips.. So you can place one on every side.. im using one Color-Dioder (59 EUR) and one White-Dioder (29 EUR) to push the effect a little bit more.. i have to use 2 of them because the TV is too big (42").. if you have a smaller TV, 1 Dioder is absolutely enough..

I have to say you dont need instructions.. all you have to do is to place the Lightstrip on the back.. (It comes with a double faced scotch tape

Thanks for sharing !
It costs $79 here. But i think its worth it from what I saw in your setup.
I'll give it a try sometime soon. I might have some trouble since I have a 46" Sammy.

yepp you will have some troubles :D
it was very hard with the 42" and i dont think you will get a great result with a 46" :/

btw the white-dioder are very very powerfull! the color-dioder still suck a little bit :)

I've moved and have a completely new setup and though you guys would like to check it out! It's my workstation + living room.

There's obviously much upgrading to be done here, but this is what it currently looks like.

My new setup includes:

Mac Mini Intel Core 2
Logitech MX Revolution
20" Apple Cinema

---

White 40" Samsung
*New* Onkyo 7.1 Surround Sound
360 Elite

Very nice! Clean, elegant -- I like it!

^ Very simplistic design.

I can't wait to see the upgrades.

Thanks guys. Actually, there are only a few minor things I would like to do to the main home theatre room. I believe in a very minimal look and probably won't add anything.

Finally got a chance to watch Nine Inch Nails - Beside You In Time on Blu Ray. It's awesome, my crappy camera doesn't do it justice. Anyone with a Blu-Ray player who even remotely likes NiN needs to buy it. And it's pretty cheap on Amazon, I think under 20 bucks ;)

Top shelf is a TiVo HD, cheapo network switch and a 360. Bottom shelf is the receiver and a Sony BDP-350 Blu Ray player.

And don't ask why the antenna is on top of 2 Cisco books and a Garmin satnav box....apparently, the local CBS affiliate (which is the only reason I have the antenna since Charter, in all their infinite wisdom, does not have that in their HD lineup even though they have CBS, Fox, et al) only comes in if you have your antenna at precisely the height that a cheap Wal-Mart end table, bookshelf speaker, 2 textbooks and a Garmin satnav box add up to, anything higher or lower and it doesn't want to come in

Anyone have any suggestions on where to place the center speaker? I don't really like it in front of the TV like that, but I don't have much room elsewhere for it, unless I move the TiVo down to the bottom shelf and stack the Blu Ray player on top of it, which I don't know if that's a great idea or not

My home theater is always moving since I am at college living in there townhouses. I only have really old pictures of when I first got everything.

Dell 2007WFP(20" widescreen monitor)

Heres a shot of the living room, I have since added a Mac Mini next to my Xbox 360.
The Mini is connected with DVI & Toslink for audio via an adapter, This works great with
air foil from the iMac + for watching movies I download.

Rear ( you can see one surround to the left ) Ignore the tripod I was trying to calibrate the receiver with an SPL meter.

Cool paintable flat 16Gauge wire ( goes to the rear surrounds. ) Im in a condo with no attic
and no basement so it was my only option. It came out great just a little pricey.
