Here's mine.. Basically made my key 'home page' apps available from anywhere by putting a folder in the dock. Second page is everything in folders - I'll use the search function to dig stuff out rather than dig through the folders. Last page has a load of random Safari bookmarks.

Is that including the nice shadows behind icons and text?

Well the designers of custom icons (can be found in the iPhone Hacks sub-forum) make some amazing icons with drop shadows very similar to what Apple has done. But they are for the icon only and not the text below, like we have with iOS4. It's slightly different but if handled the way I, and many others, did for my 3G there wasn't any noticeable hit to the performance.

You have to SSH the icons and backgrounds on a 3G to not have performance issues. All it's doing is replacing the stock icons with custom versions. If you use winterboard then I believe the phone is running both sets of icons simultaneously but you only see the custom ones. I dislike winterboard and never used it after learning about SSH.

Overall Apple's work is very nice and it looks great. They say the way it's implemented in iOS4 doesn't work well with the 3G. I'm sure that's true, but obviously there are less taxing ways to do this since people, including me, have been for years.

I'm not trying to defend or say one way is better than the other. All I wanted to explain is that it is possible for the 3G to have custom icons and wallpapers and work just fine. Clearly not the way Apple is making it happen. I don't understand why Apple's version is so taxing on the iPhone 3G. I'm really not an expert in these things. I just know what we have now, in iOS4, is looks similar to what I've been using for the past year.

feeling like a huge moron right now, but i can't figure out how to do a screen shot of my 3gs that I recently updated to 4.0... I thought it was home button and power button at the same time, but my phone keeps turning off?? what the heck am I doing wrong???

Iv'e never tried a screenshot until today:confused:

Press both the Home and Power at the same time and you should see your screen flash white which confirms your screenshot. Don't hold them just press them together and let go.

Finally settled to a background...

Note that I am doing all this from my iPhone 4 and photobucket mobile, so I don't know if it'll be actual quality....you tell me.

care to share the wallpaper por favor?

Anybody care to give this background I just whipped up a shot? I call it "5 docks." Granted it's at pre-iPhone 4 resolution and you won't get the reflection from the other icons like you would on the actual dock, but it might look interesting anyway for those of you running iOS4 on an older phone.

By the way, I haven't been able to try this out since I haven't upgraded my 3GS to iOS 4.

Here is mine, for now anyways. Now that I can change the home screen, i'm sure i'll do it often just like my macbook:apple:

It is indeed a very nice wallpaper. It appears to be a standard wallpaper cut down to iPhone size. It is part of a set called dust, which can be found at this link. The particular one used was dust_3 (name of file in zip and the third one down on the page).

I personally am using a section of dust_2 (the second one on the page) and it appears equally as good. I used a darker section as not to cause too many problems with the icons and icon labels.

Here is mine:

I thought I saw a thread posting all background images, but I can't seem to find it and I went back a ton of pages. Anyone have a bookmark?

Does anybody have the wallpaper that alot of the first iPhone 4 homescreen pics show? It looks like a cartoon streetview or something similar. Sorry can't be more descriptive.
