Just like Shrink a few days ago, my wife and I bought a washer/dryer set. Freaking expensive! In the long run, though, they will pay for themselves.

Also bought this to help keep journal articles organized. I've been playing with the trial version for a month, and just had to buy it. Love it so far. Especially after the student discount!

I bought the remaining hardcover versions of James Rollins' Sigma Force series. I despise paperback so I jumped at the chance to buy these. Unfortunately, I'm missing several books that I will be forced to buy in paperback. :(

Got tired of crappy handles from Gillette, and didn't want to pay $200+ for a good one from Art of Shaving so I'm trying Harry's.

One for home and one for travel.

have you used a front loader before? When we got ours we found that the seal on the washer is so tight that if you close the door the water just sits in there and never drys. so it starts to smell. we leave the door open now when not in use and no smell issues.

Freakin' expensive is right. I haven't bought washer/dryer in 12 years or so...lost my breath when I saw the prices...and the one's I bought were far from the most expensive. Yours look beautiful and when I was reading reviews ( including[ Consumer Reports :eek:) Samsung was right up at the top in most all categories.

Now, my question. I want you to be right, but how do you figure they pay for themselves. Tell me anything and I'll believe it...something has to justify the cost!

Ah, well. Think of it this way: Money is not the only currency, (or cost) that you pay (or save). Most people forget time......which is also of considerable value. (What are you doing when you get a taxi, rather than waiting for a bus, or tram? You are spending money to save time.....just as when you walk for hours, because you couldn't afford the bus/tram/underground metro (other spending - books, coffee, booze, jazz clubs....took priority) as you undoubtedly did when a student, you were spending time to save money.....)

Re a washing machine, the first question to look at is what are the alternatives.

In practice, these boil down to : 1: Stay in dirty clothes, immune and impervious to society's preferences. Problem is, friends and colleagues may find this a bit much, too, after a while. After all, this is no longer the Middle Ages (the Roman Catholic Church had a bit of a problem, historically with the concept of bathing and those who delighted in cleanliness; something to do with touching yourself, I think.....)

2: Wash the clothes yourself, by hand. Tedious, time-consuming, and exceedingly uninteresting. There are good reasons why no-one likes housework. Besides, when you wash clothes yourself, there is a strong possibility that wimps from the west are quite likely not to do the best possible job of it, either, in my experience.

3. Pay someone else to do your washing. Requires money. And those of us who labour under a leftish world view might struggle at the thought of foisting on those less powerful than ourselves the work we'd prefer not to be burdened with. Right wingers never, ever, really know how much those of us from the more colourful side of the rainbow's political rainbow, occasionally suffer, from such dilemmas, (before drowning our sorrows in something liquid and muttering 'sod that; I can't spend the rest of my life squaring these theological/ideological circles'....)

4. Set the machine yourself, and marvel at the fact that it is saving you hours and hours of drudgery.

5. Buy a cheaper machine, and when it breaks down (one month after the warranty has expired) curse yourself. And the buy the one you know you should have bought, in the first place.

The justification for us came down to time and expense to wash our laundry at the nearest laundromat. We were spending $15-25 a week washing and drying our laundry, plus the gas to drive 15 minutes each way, plus the time to actually wash the items.

Even with the added utility payments to operate the machines we will break even within 3-4 years against taking it elsewhere. When you add the pleasure of not having to carry your clothes outside in the winter, it's an easier choice.

Nevertheless, it still sucks to see that much money leave our account all at one time.

Also if your coming from the older top load washers with the stick in the middle these hold much more clothes so what used to be 3+ loads is now one and that saves alot of electricity especially on the dryer.

Everything you say is absolutely right. I am totally convinced that I will save so much money I might buy another washer/dryer...to save even MORE money!:cool::p

Dude, washers have become so stinkin' educated. They're smarter than me!

My in-laws have some front loaders and they are a blast to use. I love when we visit there and I get to wash clothes. LOL.

When I was buying the washer/dryer, there were two models of the machines I bought. I asked the difference between the two, and the salesperson said..."more adjustments on the new ones".

I bought the older models.

The damn things look like the inside of the Space Shuttle. Enough is too much!
