Qualcomms chips support 20x20 (which is probably what is deployed by Telstra at this point) and that means a theoretical downlink for 150mbps. 80-90mbps is within real world range.

Yep! I was pretty surprised myself. Think that's the fastest speed I've seen so far in my random speed tests around town.
Verizon LTE Speed in Washington, DC
It is usually near zero.
The service is terrible. I have the newest iPad, and more often than not when downtown, it will just spin in place while on LTE. The worst thing is, it doesn't even know its not working. I have to turn LTE off to force it to switch to 3-G, then I get Internet connectivity back.
I wish dearly I hadn't been seduced to buy a Verizon iPad on the argument that they had better service than AT&T. This is demonstrably WRONG. My old 3-G AT&T iPad worked better than this downtown. I should have stayed with AT&T. I would have had better service and a more generous data plan for the cost.
Anybody nearby want to trade?

Sprint is not done with Network Vision yet in ANY market, the speeds will improve over time. Sprint LTE is no where near as good as AT&T or Verizon yet, the coverage is simply not there so considering LTE is signal dependent once Sprint rolls out LTE on the 800 band coverage and speeds will increase immensely. Right now they are only broadcasting on the 1900 band so the speeds and signal are not as good as Verizon and AT&T on the 700 band.

That's to bad that you are having such a terrible experience. I have just the opposite with Verizon. My LTE on my iPhone is screaming fast. Everywhere for the most part it's at least 20+ down. And I travel a fair amount and its seems they have LTE almost everywhere. I'm glad I've got Verizon and unlimited data on my iPhone as well as a unlimited LTE mifi card!
