Wow!!! and that's without the 4gb RAM. I find it hard to believe you got over 700 pts than me all because of a 0.1 GHz difference. What gfx drivers are you using? And what resolution did you benchmarked it on?

If the updated penryn models are like the previous models where the 17"ers were clocked higher than th 15" models, then thats how he's getting a higher score. (If you are on a 15")

5128 points in 3d mark 06..

Running Xp 32 bits with 174.41 drivers. GPU overclocked with atitool to 640/870. No heat problems what so ever. Saw a great deal of improvements in cryis, it's actually really playable with mid-high settings at 1440*900 now!

Fan's do rev down from time to time and temperature has never gone above 68 degrees celsius.

That's amazing... I am too afraid of breaking something to overclock :p

Im using ones that i got on laptop2go. Make sure if you install them, you do it the "have disk" way because it would not work for me otherwise. I am on the osx side right now but i will try to send you a link to them once i switch to the xp side. And no its the 15 inch version not 17. Ill do 3dmark again because that does seem oddly higher. Ill post the drivers and results in a few.

How did you overclock a Nvidia card with the atitool? lol

I went back to default bootcamp drivers (167.63) and I got 4332. Why do bootcamp drivers beat everything else including the 169s and the 174s?

5561 in XP with latest 169.xx drivers

No overclocking.

Sorry, but no.

I have the latest 2.6ghz macbook pro, running the latest 169 drivers, on an optimized fresh install of XP and I get about 4300 in 3DMark06. There is no way you're getting 5500 with no overclocking unless you're using hardware that apple hasn't released yet ;-)

Actually... what 3d mark settings were you using? I was using the default demo settings (1280x1024 resolution, etc.)

You guys are getting much higher score just because of 100 or 200mhz cpu and 256mb graf card. Do not understand.

With laptop2go drivers, fresh boot, winxp 32bit, atitool overclocked to nvidia clock default, and rivatuner to overclock shader and only got 4154 marks.
3dmark 06 complete defaults, install and run bentchmark.
MBP penryn 2.4

My HDD now is making time to time, a click, like when it switches off, should i be worried?
This is my first mac so still not used to it.

The last click should be the drive moving the read heads off the platter onto the parking ramp. It's a safety feature.

For all you guys doing the benchmark, you should be running it multiple times. I've noticed in the past that my first benchmark is often lower than the subsequent ones.

So don't be too down if you first one doesn't compare to some peoples posts here. Also, drivers could play a huge role in the score you get. A driver that doesn't work too well with 3dmark may make you think your computer sucks... Another driver may make you think your computer rocks.

2.4 GHz Penryn
2 GB RAM
256 MB VRAM

Windows XP 32 bit, 171.16 drivers.

stock: 4100-4200
overclocked: 5200-5300 (GPU temps up to 80 degree Celsius, I could possibly overclock higher but stopped there.)

4200 here

2.4 Penryn
256 8600gt
xp pro
169.04 drivers
stock

what are you all using to read temps?

AtiTool can measure the temperature and displays it in the task bar.

Ah, well I didn't use 1280x1024. I chose 1280x800 because it was the closest resolution that was the same aspect ratio as my MBP's native resolution. I thought it would keep the notebook from having to do any weird pixel mapping.

I ran the test again just to make sure I didn't misread it, and got similar results:

3dmark.JPG

You might run it again at my resolution and compare.

I'm using a 17" MBP, 2.5GhZ, 512MB GPU, 7200RPM, latest 169 drivers.

Can we please all use default settings. When you use lower resolutions you will get higher scores which is difficult to compare with. Also if you own the Advanced version, you can turn on all the tests. It won't affect your score much.

Er sorry for the thread necromancy, but I thought it was relevant:

Was at under 3900-4000 with a stock penryn 2.4

Updated to the newest 174.82 drivers and got up to 4100-4200. Nice little boost for little effort. :) Translated to ~5 more fps in the games I tried.

Yeah I just ran my GPU at 700/900 with latest 174 drivers as well and I got 6124 in 3DMark06. Very nice improvement; though I think I'll stick with a more moderate clock; GPU was at 110 Celsius. Running at 650/880 gives me 5516 @ 85 Celsius--so much safer.

Anyone know what temperatures are considered "safe" for GPU hardware? The ability to boil water seems to be a warning sign for me..

I'm no expert, but even 85 degree Celsius seems to be at the upper limit to me.
