Major Mac functionality GONE!

Under all previous versions of OS X, I was able to open the nib file for my Stickies application and add a scrollbar to the side of the windows. In Snow Leopard, this cannot be done as they are "compiled" and according to documentation should have been left out of the application when it was distributed.

This is a MAJOR piece of basic mac functionality that should be returned. While it may speed up apps loading ( I can't see it myself ), it violates the major advantage of Objective-C, that of late binding, where the nibs are used to control layout and much of the visual behavior.

I don't know how to impress upon the people who make decisions at Apple that this was one of the major differences between the Windooze approach and Macs. Now it's gone!

Use your influence and see if someone can attract Apples attention to this really bad decision!

is it possible to collect all bugs/problems in 1st thread. it seems to be all spread out.

everything seems to run well for me. only annoyance is Spaces running very choppy and not smooth as it should.

TEMPORARY SOLUTION: install developers tool if not done so yet, i found mine in the UTD SL disc under xcode. it is listed as 'essential files' (it is grayed out and is already selected, i unchecked the rest of the items).

run Quartz Debugger. under Beam Sync - click on disable. i left Quartz debugger running because once i close it, the setting doesnt stick. i tried the force quit trick, still doesnt work for me. so i leave it running with beam sync disabled and space transition is very silky smooth. i know some people are against this, but it makes my SL experience 100% better.

Upgrade from 10.5.8

Safari started crashing all the time immediately after the upgrade. I don't think its a Safari issue, though. I tried FireFox and it does the same thing. I noticed that the crashes seemed to be happening while I was scrolling - further it seemed to be happening when I scrolled using the multitouch scrolling on the trackpad. I've been testing this theory by avoiding the multitouch and for the moment that seems to resolve the problem, no crashes. I'm looking for a way to trash the trackpad prefs, wondering if there is some stale pref leftover from 10.5.8, but trackpad prefs seem to be stored in the systemprefs file and I'm reluctant at the moment to trash that.

I have not noticed if it crashes on scroll in any other app than the browsers.

An update: The issue is definitely tied to the browsers in some way. I installed Opera and have zero issue with it; its been performing flawlessly, no crashes. I did go back and trash the system prefs and a bunch of other pref files, reset PRAM and SMC, still no joy, Safari and FireFox still crash on cue. There still seems to be a correlation between trackpad mouse gestures and the browser crashing. If I don't use any mouse gestures in Safari and FireFox they both are pretty stable. Not sure of the connection. Safari is webkit, FireFox is Gecko and Opera is presto-based. I'm guessing that Safari/FireFox both tap into a common kit or library (dylib) that is flaky whereas Opera is self-contained in its compile.

I only have a single Macbook, and I am not sure if the problem is widespread or not.

One problem I have been having since Snow Leopard was installed is when I browse Windows Shares with CMD-K, the share is mounted. However, when I double-click on one of the folders, it can sometimes take up to ten or fifteen seconds before the files show up (with the spinning wheel next to the icon size bar at the lower right hand corner of the window). It's not consistent, as sometimes that will happen, and sometimes, the files will show up right away.

It's not a write permission issue, as nothing has changed on the Windows side of things (i.e., full read/write access). I have rebooted my Windows boxes, and I have even deleted all the .DS_Store files on the Windows boxes, but the delay still exists.

Has anyone experienced something similar?

iPhone won't sync.

Did a standard upgrade install on my 1 year old Macbook last night.

Saw the speed increase and footprint reduction as advertised, but then had the beach ball on Mail and iTunes - had to force quit those.

The big frustration came when I plugged in my 3G iPhone. iPhoto started fine and imported pictures no trouble. iTunes started very slowly and after 10+ minutes of a beach ball was given a dialogue box that said that "syncing was turned off". I don't remember the exact wording, but the implication was that clicking OK would turn syncing on. That didn't work and I had to force quit.

I haven't found anybody else with this exact problem yet, though some are similar. Any suggestions?

I'm not sure if this is a bug or not, but Trash is acting a little bit weird. I went to empty the trash and it reported over 3700 trash items. Which is odd as I emptied it after my SL upgrade and have moved very little to the trash bin since then.

Weirder still, after letting this marathon trash empty of the 3700 items happen, I moved a single item to the trash.

When I went to empty it, I could see that it said it was emptying 5 items. I'm not sure if that's normal or not, but it is a little bit odd.

Line Out not sticky

On reboot I have to reset my external speakers in System Preferences--Sound to Line Out. It reverts to Internal Speakers every time.

Yet Another Update: I'm convinced now that my Safari/FF crash issue is related to 32/64 bitness, won't be able to prove that until later. Undoubtedly I have some 32bit plugin that simply fails. We've been discovering all sorts of issues today that are related to 32 vs. 64 bitness - app crashes, app issues, printer drivers etc. Work-around (won't call it a solution) is to simply run your app in 32 bit mode, voila, no more issues! Real drag to run your apps in 32 bit mode when you have a shiny new 64 bit OS, a real step backward. This is a real big problem in the Winders world as well with 64 bit XP and 2003 Server - you wind up installing nearly everything as 32 bit just so it'll work. This will sort itself out soon enough as companies start releasing SL 64 bit compatible updates to their products, meanwhile there is a work-around.

Download links in Safari don't download, a .zip for example will just show a blank page, so I copy the address, open the downloads window and paste it, it downloads fine.

MobileMe seems to be syncing almost continuously, the icon in the status bar is spinning every time I look at it. The last sync was two days ago and it's been syncing almost 24/7 since then.

Except that Firefox is a 32-bit application to start with.

S-

True, yes, but it may be trying to use a 64 bit (or otherwise incompatible) plugin. I won't know until later today when I've got a chance to work with my laptop.

Not sure if this has been said since the thread is so long, but connecting to a samba server does not work.

Spotlight has been "Estimating indexing time" for more than 60 hours now. Will it ever stop?
First, remove all 3rd party mdimporters found in System/Library/Spotlight. 3rd party mdimporters interfere with the mdworker_32 process of indexing meta data for Spotlight. Removing them from the Spotlight folder solves this problem. As soon as they are taken out, indexing will begin immediately.

I've tried using Image Capture and the Printer function in Prefs. Notta. HP doesn't have an updated driver and who knows if they will. I may have to remove Snow due to the necessity of a scanner.
Try typing the Printer/Scanner IP address into Printer Utility via Protocol: HP Jetdirect. this works for HP Laserjet 2100M models, and will possibly work here. To find the IP address, print out a configuration page by pressing the "Go" and "Job Cancel" buttons simultaneously. From the configuration page 2, get printer IP address.

All ur problems seem personal..

This topic deserved its own thread, just wanted to add to here as well:

https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=8417664#post8417664

Personally I LOVE THE NEW GUI (not that different =), and have encountered little-to-none problems, just a few betas is all, no crashes, none of the stuff ive been seeing on this thread...

*********************************************************

So i have used OSX for a very long time...

when i upgraded to snow leopard, one of the first things i did was install little snitch and noobproof...

After installing firewalls, I went to disable mDNSResponder on my laptop and iMac... bonjour=mDNSResponder... which is a really stupid service for someone like myself (doesnt need to advertise my existence to current networks)... Bonjour has always had its ups and downs... BUT

WHEN YOU DISABLE BONJOUR/mDNSResponder YOU CANNOT ACCESS THE INTERNET AT ALL!!!

Once Bonjour is dissabled from snow leopard via terminal command:

sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist

or by disallowing network connections to the service via a firewall...

I CANNOT ACCESS THE INTERNET VIA SAFARI OR OTHER!!!, my network settings remain the same, claiming I have connection... I have to re-enable access/turn on mDNSResponder to gain access to the internet again.

When highlighted in little snitch, the services purpose is:
"is necessary for local host name resolving."

I do not know if Snow Leopard some how has relied on Bonjour/mDNSResponder to assign basic network connections, but it totally nocks out all internet to my intel iMac 22"

Please, if anyone can explain why this happens after Snow is installed, or can solve it, let me know immediately...

If you dont know why, but have experienced the same thing, please leave a comment on how u disabled and what problems you receive afterwards.

UPDATE:

Well, I havnt solved it, but I can at least limit it... here is what i did (without "disabling via terminal" which leaves no connectivity)...

Using LittleSnitch I was able to block access to mDNSResponder, but when this is done by itself, it gives limited access to the internet... when i say limited, safari would not load some websites/parts of the websites and would hang on the load... but my torrents download fine in background (firewall configured for torrent port)...

SO, I denied all access to ff02::fb, 224.0.0.251... and then made a rule ALLOWING only access to the router IP, this i believe will stop some of the security holes that bonjour brings...

UPDATE: I also blocked incoming traffic on Ports 7648 and 5354 with NoobProof

NOTE: in the network monitor, these are what gets connected to mDNSResponder:
RouterIPAddress
ff02::fb
User.local
224.0.0.251

DO NOT TRY TO BLOCK YOUR User.local!!! It will crash your littlesnitch for obvious reasons!! =)

Im gunna mess around a bit more with what to block and allow...

QUESTION:

1) Does mDNSResponder receive or listen for "incoming" connections from other computers which have bonjour/mDNSResponder on?

2) If so, than what port/protocol can i "block" within my "incoming" firewall (NoobProof)?

UPDATE: I found this in iana.org:
mdnsresponder 5354/tcp Multicast DNS Responder IPC
mdnsresponder 5354/udp Multicast DNS Responder IPC
cuseeme 7648/tcp bonjour-cuseeme
cuseeme 7648/udp bonjour-cuseeme

So, anyone know of any better ways to stop mdnsresponder from spreading its VD all over my computer?

PS: For all of those saying there SL is crashing and they cant run the apps they want... im running adobe, adobe update, littleSnitch, NoobProof, PeerGaurdain, Growl, HardwareGrowl, Transmission (1.2mb/ps) and much more with no problems.... (most of which are betas)... hers a sneek peek:

for me the system is generally slower after the screensaver has been on. sometimes it will take a while for the screensaver to go off, the screen will go black for 5 seconds or so before coming back up to the desktop. similarly, after the screensaver has been on, i'll switch to another desktop where i have 2-3 apps open, and i get the beachball of death until i exit out all the programs, and that in itself is glitchy as the dock is very unresponsive.

This may be due to a 3rd party screen saver, or other 3rd party background processes which are interfering with performance. I've removed 3rd party screensavers, and SL is running and responding at impressive speeds.

Did you run software update? There is an update that specifically addresses this issue thats been available since the launch.

Screen capture to clipboard won't work

Hopefully this hasn't been posted. I searched the thread and manually skimmed it and didn't see anything.

Cmd + Shift + 4 works great and creates the file of my screen capture on my desktop, but I use Cmd + Ctrl + Shift + 4 all the time to copy something to my clipboard and paste it into an email or something else I'm working on, and it no longer works. I hate having to take the extra steps of pulling the file into my email and then deleting it when I'm done.

When I press all the short cut keys, it invokes the crosshairs and allows me to make a selection. It even makes the little camera noise after I'm done selecting, but when I try to paste the selection nothing happens. Any ideas?

Anyone else not having recent documents in center apps like "preview?"

Its seems you have to have recent items set in the appearance pane, else if its set to zero apps wont how recent items

Confirmed. I actually kind of like that this is linked now - be it by design or due to a bug.

EDIT: At first I thought all applications were affected, but Quicktime X (the player), for example, is not. So this behavior, however it is supposed to work exactly, seems definitely buggy or at least inconsistent.

Yeah same with me too QT X remembers.

Works fine on my system.
