"Bless tool" startup problems

10.6 on iMac, 10.5.8 on external hd.
Booted up from 10.6 iMac and tried to change startup disk to 10.5.8 ext hd.
Received "The bless tool was unable to set the current boot disk" message.
Went into safe mode, went to "startup disk".
Successfully booted from 10.5.8 ext hd.

Safari crashes almost every time I try to upload an attachment to forums such as this one - I'm posting this from Firefox so I can attached the image below. FF also crashes occasionally doing the same thing, but a lot less than Safari.

Aperture (2.1.4 the latest version) crashes randomly and the open/save/export etc. dialogues have this grey bar in them in any view (columns/icons/list).

I have installed Snow Leopard on 3 computers. On the whole it was an easy install and i certainly like the speed increases i have seen on all 3 machines, however i have hit a couple of snags on one of the computers (my main one of course) and i have also hit a problem common to all 3 computers. They are:

1. Installed on a MacBook Pro with 2 gigs of ram. Install took right at 52 minutes. All software works with SL and boot time sleep time and shut down are way faster than before. Only problem so far is Mail. It refuses to connect with my smtp server and when i do get it to connect it won't do it again if i unload the program and come back to it later.

2. Installed on a 24" iMac with 2 gigs of ram. Install took right at 50 minutes. All software works with SL and boot time, sleep time, and shut down are way faster than before. Only problem so far is Mail. It refuses to connect with my smtp server and when i do get it to connect it won't do it again if i unload the program and come back to it later.

3. Installed on a MacPro (my main computer). Install took right at 56 minutes. All software works with SL and boot time and sleep is way faster than before. However, it refuses to reboot or even shut down and goes to a blue screen with the little round thing that goes round and round forever. Only way i can get a shut down is to cut power. And as with the other 2 computers Mail will not connect with my smtp, and once it does if i unload the program and come back later it will not connect.

I have spent close to 2 hours online with Apple support and other than blame my IP for the Mail problem they could give no answer to either problem. Anyone have any ideas or solutions?
:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

I have a goofy little preferences problem involving an M-Audio Firewire Audiophile external sound card.

My 2008 MacPro system recognizes the device properly, allows me to switch to it as the preferred audio output path (via the system preference pane "sound"), and drives it fine.

The problem comes with reboots. The MacPro then defaults to its internal speakers and I have to reopen the "sound" preference pane. The system then allows me to reselect the external sound card and life is fine again.

Going to the M-Audio pane (v 1.3.2 / driver 1.8.4 /build 3) doesn't point to any options for solving the problem.

A small irritation, but hopefully someone at M-Audio will figure out a solution.

I'm suffering the same Open/Save dialog issue. You can reproduce it every time in Safari but it's a dice roll in FireFox.

When hovering in Expose over minimized window and then deactivating Expose, that window doesn't maximize as non-minimized windows do. (you have to click at it instead, as just hovering over doesn't do the trick)

My only SL flaw so far is it seems to not be restarting after install :( That screen with the apple has been been there for over a half hour now.

I installed Snow Leopard on my 2.2GHz SR MBP. All I got for my trouble was screen freezes and kernel panics. I took it to the genius bar twice (once after archive and install, once after erase and install) and they said it was software related. My hardware was tested and they said it was ok.

The final straw was today when I got kernel panics on boot at least 10 times in a row. Finally got it to boot from the DVD and reinstalled tiger.

Conclusion: SL turned by MBP into a $2200 paperweight. I'm going to the Apple Store tomorrow to 1) Get another hardware test to confirm that it's not the problem and 2) return Snow Leopard.

Kernel Panics and screen lock ups sound like a hardware issue. It is possible that RAM, video card, etc, are working okay under your old operating system but are failing under the latest one.

Rather than have the geniuses blame software, you should ask them for a new SL installation disc and have them install it and confirm the issues. From there hopefully they can pinpoint what hardware is faulty.

So it just froze under a fresh install of Tiger. Back to the Genius Bar I go!

The only thing they didn't test is RAM. I ran the apple hardware test and the RAM came back ok. I don't understand what's going on.

Only thing that broke was Vine (third party VNC server). I dumped it and went back to Apple's built-in VNC server.

Since installing SL, audio cuts out when having a video chat in iChat. According to the Genius at the Apple Store, the problem lies with Time Capsule and SL.

Yet Another Update: I'm convinced now that my Safari/FF crash issue is related to 32/64 bitness, won't be able to prove that until later. Undoubtedly I have some 32bit plugin that simply fails. We've been discovering all sorts of issues today that are related to 32 vs. 64 bitness - app crashes, app issues, printer drivers etc. Work-around (won't call it a solution) is to simply run your app in 32 bit mode, voila, no more issues! Real drag to run your apps in 32 bit mode when you have a shiny new 64 bit OS, a real step backward. This is a real big problem in the Winders world as well with 64 bit XP and 2003 Server - you wind up installing nearly everything as 32 bit just so it'll work. This will sort itself out soon enough as companies start releasing SL 64 bit compatible updates to their products, meanwhile there is a work-around.

Eh, scratch just about everything I've said. Although Opera is infinitely more stable than other browsers (at the moment), it, too, is crashing. I've removed all browser-plugins, reinstalled updated browser plug-ins, purged browser and system caches, zapped PRAM/SMC, removed old system extensions, updated outdated system extensions, removed old preference panes, updated other pref panes, removed many app pref files, tried Safari in 64 and 32 bit modes, rebuilt permissions - all no joy. ;-( About the only thing I have not yet tried is working with a newly created, pristine user account.

FIrefox and Safari painfully slow on SL

Since installing SL, I have noticed that when either using Firefox or Safari, it's taking about 8-10 seconds to load a page in the browsers now. It's like freaking Dialup speeds! Can't figure it out... Using the fastest internet (Roadrunner Turbo Plus) and it's slow? Geez... When I was running Leopard all my pages loaded almost instantly, now it's a web crawl. I'm afraid I'll have to resort to using Time Machine and setting my Mac back to Leopard. Apple has never let me down until now...:(

Just installed SL on my 3 year old mbp, everything works fine except for my at&t Quicksilver usb 3g modem. Not Apples fault I guess, just have to wait for Option to update their driver.

MKV in Snow Leopard

I cant see them properly... neither with quicktime + perian nor with any other as plex or vlc.... when is 1920x1080 the performance is terrible... I only can see dvds & divx properly
I have tried with every player in the market and I can not see properly the full HD mkv in my new macmini with nvidia 9400
(4 gigas ram)

why nobody more say about that problem?
Somebody can see ok?

Printing problems

Have had problems with 2 printers. The apparent problem is that 1) Epson did not supply a printer specific driver for a Stylus 740 so it JUST prints. No utility is available. 2) HP has NO driver available for a Deskjet 3940. Printer will do NOTHING. Emails to Apple & HP as well as a talk to Applecare have not helped. Be careful when you buy a printer at this time until the drivers get to Apple.

SOLVED!(?) ... well, it appears to be solved. Looks like I've fallen victim to the 'input managers' issue, but with a twist. I've never installed any input managers, and plugins have always been limited to 1 or 2 'essential' plugins. Reading through this thread and other threads and not limiting my search to just 10.6 it appears that input managers wreak as much havoc as plugins. Specifically it seems that download managers are an issue. But ... I've never installed a download manager. Then it hit me, I subscribe to eMusic and even though its not an input manager it is a download manager that works with the browsers. You won't find it in the plugins directories or input managers directories so I didn't think of it at first. Its in the application support directories. What's more, I had a much older version of their downloader. Since removing the eMusic downloader and all of its prefs my Safari has been stable and quick, yay! I have not tried the latest version of the eMusic downloader so I don't know how compatible it may be with 10.6; no hurry, its not a necessary tool and the stability gained without it is so nice!

Moral of the story: look for browser apps that may behave like plugins or input managers even though they may not be installed as a plugin or input manager :D

Vertical lines on Top Sites animations in Safari.
I'm having the same problem.
I can't figure out why. At first I thought it was a bad graphics card, so Apple swapped it out with a brand new GEForce 8800 GT for Mac. It's a great card, but the problems still there. The lines only show up during the Top Sites animation. Also, when I open spaces and drag a window from one space to another, it lags big time. If anyone has a solution for either problem please let me know!

Mac Pro1,1 (April 2007) 2.66 with 10Gig of Ram was slow and sluggish compared to what it was under Leopard. Tried both upgrade and clean install to no avail. Reverted back to Leopard.

I have this exact same computer with 10 Gigs of RAM too. Mine is also sluggish. I was about to do clean install, but sorry to hear that doesn't help. I'll hang in there for now and wait for an update I guess.

I just had a weird issue. (10.6, clean install, iMac 8,1)

My entire home folder was copied to a folder within itself, contents and everything. It's not a 'mirror' like with aliases, and isn't 'current' in the sense that I deleted a few things from the real home folder and the changes weren't replicated. Anyway, it looks like this:

The way it was:

Home
--Desktop
--Documents
--Downloads
--Movies
--Music
--Etc

But now it looks like this:

Home
--Home
----Desktop
----Documents
----Downloads
----Movies
----Music
----Etc
--Desktop
--Documents
--Downloads
--Movies
--Music
--Etc

and then, within the second home folder was another home folder that was 'faded out', you know like how stuff is shown in SL when it's being copied.

I rebooted, moved the duplicate to the trash, but haven't emptied it. My home folder is 44GB so I would have noticed if I had accidentally copied it myself since it would have taken a bit of time.

I am confused to say the least. Any thoughts?

Address Book!!

My Address Book is empty since the upgrade. All my contacts are still around as I can find them by Spotlight and the address book widget, they just don't appear in address book.

My boot time was pretty slow when I first updated. Well not really slow, but nothing to write home about, it was like 45 seconds. And the shut down time was a blazing fast four seconds. But now it takes about 2 minutes to shut down and it has an equally long start up.
