But: Even there, most of the time, I will give my business - an espresso, the paper, a bottle of water for the train - to a small kiosk staffed by an enthusiastic woman from eastern Europe who makes a genuinely mean espresso with a pleasant smile, and remembers what I like.

I really really wish we had one of those here :). I'd go there every day. That sounds like a movie. lol.

This reminded me of the show Cheers' theme song
"Where everybody knows your name
And they're always glad you came.
You wanna be where you can see,
The troubles are all the same.
You wanna be where everybody knows your name"

Sure sounds good!

Espresso?

We do have espresso.

You can order two shots straight. Tell the barista you want a Doppio.

No. That hour of the morning, I wouldn't know what a Doppio is, and wouldn't expect anyone else to, either.

I am invariably rushing to catch a train. Passengers in the elegant (and yes, with its high ceilings, sash windows, and wooden floors, and lovely wooden tables and chairs, the Starbuck's in the Victorian railway station does have a certain je ne sais quoi elegance to it, especially if there is condensation......) Starbuck's tend to be younger, maybe hipper......than what you might kindly refer to as my demographic.

Now, I have had coffee there - and it was perfectly decent - but, I do prefer the kiosk.

But, I like the kiosk, the clever, kindly (and fast) service, and the banter of the bewildered at that hour of the day.

And - at that godforsaken hour of the early morning - all I want is an espresso. Or a double espresso. As I stand there, newspaper stashed into the rear of my briefcase along with a bottle of water, all I want is an espresso.......

I'm using Starbuck's term for it. Pretty sure their terms, Grande and Venti aren't actually used by anyone in Italy to describe cup sizes. :D

Anyway, if in Starbucks a Doppio is simply two shots of pure espresso. You get it in a little dinky cup they give you. It's just what they call it, but it's the same thing you're talking about except Starbucks doesn't offer it as simply one shot (because the machine makes two shots at a time and the rules state they have to use a shot within 30 seconds).

starbucks not so common here, but over run with costa coffee shops
I can't drink Costa's coffee. To my palette it has a strange aftertaste, reminiscent of when a burp brings a little bit of coffee back up.

Starbucks isn't great coffee either, but there's one right there on my walk to work, so typically I pick up a Grande Soy Latte most mornings. Normally with the Origin Espresso, unless it too has a weird aftertaste going on as some of them do.

That's because everyone in Italy drinks teeny tiny coffees that will melt spoons

I have no hate for Starbucks. The small indy coffee shops aren't so prevalent where I am, so they are pretty much my options or a gas station. So...

What I do order though is simple enough and seems to intrigue them.

I just get an Americano with Raspberry syrup. They like making it because it seems to smell nice to them.

Since I'm the only one who seems to order it, it makes any Starbucks I got to more than 2X, an easily remembered order.

There are some outstanding coffee shops around California! Heck, I walked two different directions, totally random, from the place I stayed a few trips ago, and stumbled into these two amazing little cafes (one each way).

There are. But here in the CA high desert, choices are often limited (2 hours north of LA).

Image of Starbucks trying hard to get us to go! :)

I'm so glad I got out of that nut factory!

Some business people I've read say that you should have your customers focused on the product and not what they are spending. The Rewards change made it so my only focus was on how much I was spending and how much it was going to take me to achive a reward.

This kind of thing just doubles down on it. It's ridiculous how many stars you have to have now. Go back to simple when it was 12 stars you needed to reach.

Unsweetened of course! Unsweetened tea as well.
Whoops I meant to say Iced Coffee - but yeah, same here - Unsweetened Ice Tea is all I order when I go to restaurants, and black iced coffee is a favorite of mine at Starbucks. Always get wide eyes when they confirm my "unsweetened" iced coffee order. lol.

Its great :)

If the tea leaf is flavorful then it definitely doesn't need to be sweetened.

Grande latte, sometimes grande soya latte. I've noticed, probably to appease Italians and not be quite so wrong, it's now called a Grande Caffè Latte. How posh.

Rarely (i.e. about once every year) I'll go mad and get a venti strawberry & cream frappuccino or whatever the latest diabetes advice says never to drink.

It's a comfortable environment and a relaxing mug of hot milk with caffeine in it. The bitter espressos (over extracted? over roasted? over - something else?) work well when drowned in a bucket of milk!

Haha gotta splurge every once in awhile.
[doublepost=1501606150][/doublepost]Does anyone make cold brew coffee at home? Any advice for the newbie?

When we go to Starbucks, my husband loves the vanilla bean frapuccino. I stay away from sweet, and don't care for their dark or regular roast. The blonde isn't bad.

I prefer their food.

Yes, the blonde is actually very good, but only if you buy the beans from them.

Yes, the Costas are very popular in the south west. No idea why though.

I still fail to grasp the concept of anything "Drive-Thru"… But I guess the "not even having to get out of your car" thing must appeal to some people. o_O

It's an American invention. I saw one in the UK back in the late 90s and thought it was a mirage. They've definitely popped up here and there. Counted a handful of them a few years ago. I definitely think it's an appeal to younger drivers. Those who've got more disposable income than say older generations. Now that I'm an expert on today's youth, but there seems to be a genuine interest in American lifestyle by young Britons. I don't really see the fascination myself unless it's the movie stars.
