Most Apple Stores are in malls that haven't allowed camping yet.

Mine will let us start at 3PM on Thursday.

I don't get it. Why camp for a whole day when simply setting the alarm for 12am last Friday to preorder guaranteed you a phone day one.

There are a high number of people that did what you mentioned and still aren't getting the phone delivered on Friday the 19th. They're going to wait in line for the chance of still getting the phone.

Yep. In Germany the phone was sold out very fast and the Apple servers couldn't handle it at all - meaning even if you were on time you had a good chance of not getting one as you couldn't connect to the store.

I didn't even sleep that night and had 4 devices going trying to preorder and by the time I got through it already said 3-4 weeks shipping. Believe me I would love to avoid camping out but the pre-orders were not that easy this year.

In Oberhausen, Germany, there are already about 250 people waiting at 3:20 PM local time... it's sick this year

Don't these people have families? Jobs?

I don't know, economy is still recovering ;)

Plus many people with jobs get things such as time off... vacation, sick days, etc. Some may even be paid to stand in line for those that want the phone.

To each his own with provolone! It's not cup o tea either, but I get it. I can see the allure of it for some. If I was younger I would do something like this.

It's all good when the weather cooperates. If not, what a mess if the only line is outdoors without cover.

I was working in NYC a couple of years ago when they launched the iPad 3 and I wandered up to see what the queues were like the night before launch (long!), but the thing I most remember is that the folks at the front all had bright yellow Otterbox blankets as Otterbox had pitched up to use the launch as a marketing tool and been handing them out to people, as it was March and quite chilly to say the least!
