I have an AT&T iPhone 5, different size SIM, how do I upgrade to the full price unlocked 6s from apple. They will have to transfer my phone number and I pay AT&T even more money?

I have found myself in the same place when they changed SIM card sizes. You can buy new ATT SIM cards on eBay and once inserted in the phone you call the ATT customer service and tell them you want your plan/service moved to this new SIM. Took about 10 minutes and it was over. You new 6S, if ordered from Apple will have a SIM card in it so just call ATT and have your service/plan move to it.

I have even known AT&T to give you a new SIM card at no charge.

For what it's worth, I had to do the same thing when switching over from my old S4 to the 6+. I went to the AT&T store and they swapped out the SIM card for me at no charge, but that was late last year.

I am in the same boat coming off an iPhone 5, I plan on getting the 6s 128GB, so I guess I'm stuck buying it on their website at 2am or whenever it goes up and pray for a fast delivery. Is it possible to ship to an AT$T store and just go pick it up on release day or does it have to be sent to the actual house? Guess I will have to find a close store and get a smaller SIM. Fun times.

The way I read this announcement (which could be completely wrong), the fees will only apply to someone signing a new contract (traditional subsidized phone), signing a NEXT contract or starting a new line with a phone that they already own.

If you are just getting a new SIM card activated on your existing line that is not under contract, I do not think that AT&T is going to charge you for that.

Of course you could always just walk into a Corporate AT&T store with your iPhone 6S and say you lost your SIM card and need another one.

As an FYI, T-mobile charges up to $15 for a SIM card. So it would not surprise me to see AT&T start doing this also.

AT&T Corporate in my area has always charged $25 for SIM cards but they usually waive the fee as long as you buy something else from them. Last time I had to get a SIM replaced, they had a sale on cases so I bought an Otterbox Defender (iPhone 5) for $5.

I forgot which model it was - either T-Mobile or Verizon - but one of the carriers offered through Apple's website is usually unlocked and works across most major carriers.

Sprint, AT&T and Verizon are all unlocked. T-Mobiles are the only ones that are not.

What am I missing here. We have two phones on NEXT already. It is cheaper than the contract way. Help me understand the "ripped off" part.

Depends on the plan. ATT and VZN give you a $25 discount per line on Next or Edge, but you have to be on a certain level data plan. At Verizon it's 6GB, I'm not sure about ATT because I pay them for 40 so for me that's a moot point. If you're on less than 6GB you get a 15 dollar discount. If you're on an old plan, including old unlimited plans, there is no discount at all, just the full price of the phone. For most people, Next/Edge at ATT/VZN is a better deal.

Since you are on the NEXT plan, I assume that you also have a shared data plan even though you may only have a single device on your plan.

For the shared data plans it depends on your pool of data. If you have 10GB a month or higher, then you NEXT discount is $25/mo. AT&T subsidizes $450 of the the price of an iPhone if you are on contract. So to be on contract on a shared data plan would cost you $600 ($25/mo. x 24 mos.) if you have 10GB or higher of shared data.

However, if you have less than 10GB of data, then your NEXT discount is only $15/mo. So that would cost you $360 ($15/mo. x 24 mos.). So in that case it would be worth being on contract for an iPhone.

For an Android phone the subsidy is usually only $350 from full-price. So it is never worth being on contract with an Adroid phone.

All this assumes you are on a shared data plan. If you are on an old minutes plan with a data package added on, you receive no discount for being "off contract". So you may as well upgrade your phone every 24 months.

I just got off the phone with AT&T.

I am on an iP6 contract until late next year. If I upgrade to the 6s +, I must pay for the phone in full.

Now according to this AT&T rep I can use the new iPhone 6s+ on my existing contract. My contract end date will NOT be extended and I won't have to pay an ETF for my 6. I have no idea what happens with the 6 though.

While I know AT&T wants to eliminate the 2 year contract, I'll call again a little later and see if I get the exact same information. This all sounds too good to be true to me so I want to triple check.

I wasn't planning on upgrading, but my vision is dictating the need for a larger screen sooner rather than later. If additional AT&T reps give me the same information, I'll post here.

EDIT:

REP #2 confirmed all of the information above ...

and my iP6 cannot be unlocked until the contract expires next October. That's the least of my worries.

Why do so many people want to do 2 year contracts or buy the phone for the full retail price? Just do Next 12, and you save 8 months of payments by trading your phone in next year when the iPhone 7 is out.

No disrespect here,

AT&T have confirmed I cannot join Next until May 2016. I need a larger screen asap. I am taking a hit (in that I did not wait for my iP5 contract to expire this June), but I will happily consider this a lesson learned. My eyes are a hell of a lot more important than an installment plan for a phone. While what you say makes perfect sense, it's not viable for me at this time.

What month/year did you get your iPhone 5?

I bought a 6 last October. Traded in my iP5 which I purchased three months prior to the 5s release as my 4s died. So it's a double hit $$$ until next October...

Yeah... this is money I could have used toward replacing my iMac but...

Hindsight and all of that.

Because it's half price with subsidy and I don't want to change my unlimited data plan.

I just bailed on AT&T after 6 years nothing but nasty in the past year and they certainly do not deserve any more of my hard earned d'oh ;). So I may just swallow my pride and do the JUMP on lease from T-Mobile for the 6+. That'll be less of a wash than if I buy another phone outright. And so I'll eat crow again (first time I've had poultry in a while, but hey...live and learn.)
