I’d say it’s a non-issue. I compared my Oneplus One and 3 side by side and at 1080p could not notice any relevant difference between the IPS and AMOLED displays when it comes to clarity. The iPhone X should be fine.

That kind of brightness becomes mostly relevant only for watching HDR videos. Being able to go over 1000 nits is a plus for that.

Just like with the Apple Watch (1.000 nits), it's good to have in very bright light (direct sunshine).

Rene Ritchie said the screen is a diamond PenTile.

Why not quote the whole thing? It's short and intriguing:

"It’s a diamond but Apple’s doing a lot of stuff no other vendor has done with OLED before. Waiting to hit it with my loupe."

Complaining or raising a perfectly valid point about a characteristic of the screen whilst fully acknowledging that I haven't yet seen the device in person? If the forum isn't for discussing this sort of issue then what is it for? I have experience with a similar type of panel on another phone, I found that I preferred the LCD on the iPhone plus line, I posted to see if anyone else agreed. Some do, some don't, all PoVs accommodated and given equal air time... don't think that amounts to complaining but discussing what could potentially be a hitch for someone who is planning on spending $/£/€1,000 on this device. Sorry but really unable to see the problem here.

I think the difference is because up to about a year or two ago OLED in phones was sort of crap they were way too bright and the colors were all over the place. Then they really did start getting a lot nicer. Before staring at them basically gave me a headache. I think it's perfectly fair to say starting with the S8 or just before they started getting really nice.

Could be due to the camera taking the picture and not the display on the iPhone X.

Yeah I don't see how anyone comes to this conclusion, it's going to be a high PPI screen with better contrast and likely a better color reproduction. Not to mention this screen isn't going to have any downsampling since it's x3. I don't see how you come to a 'lower perceived resolution' unless you're just trying to troll.

No, it really can't be.

I don't think you understand that PPI is NOT the whole story. SPPI is far more important, and why OLED pixel methods ARE concerning.

Seriously? This is a normal effect of using a digital camera to take a screen shot of a screen! It is known as moiré.

From wiki's page on moiré:

Sorry to disappoint you, but, there is no such thing as cross-hatch gate.

The red fringing around the icon definitely isn't moire, though the cross hatch may be.

Me, I'm not on a crusade against all pentile, but at 450ppi, that does leave the strange situation of two of three colour channels being at the resolving power of the 8, not the 8 Plus, making that last the sharpest iPhone still.

We'll have to wait on production testing, but with diamond matrix pentile being known and 450ppi being known, I can't see how it'll be sharper than the 400PPI Plus that doesn't share subpixels.

I don't understand the complaints.
Prior to iPhone X - why doesn't Apple use OLED, its the future.
iPhone X - why is Apple using OLED, its crap compared to what they have now.

I've not heard one person complain about the samsung S8's screens, I'm sure if I google it, I can find someone complaining but my point is that its a gorgeous screen and apple is embracing the future, errr ummm present, since OLED is has been used for some time. The iPhone X's DPI and resolution are so high, I think complaints about a pentile matrix being used is unfounded and misplaced, especially since people haven't even been able to buy the phone yet.

First off, different groups of people can say different things...The "first the internet said X, then they said Y" thing, it's almost like the internet is a lot of individual minds.

Second, the GS8/Note8 have higher PPIs than the iPhone X at 500something, at 450PPI and two colour channels resolving 2/3rds of that, the X will likely be less sharp than the Plus, while the Note 8 still ends up on top through more sheer resolution.

On my 750P iPhone 7 I can easily see jagged edges without trying, so I was hoping the X would at least be Plus sharpness which is much better, but the X seems to be nearer the base 7/8 in end sharpness to a human.

The more people try to squeeze out of him, the more it sounds like he just means Apples usual calibration, and not any novel change to the underlying OLED technology over what Samsung makes

https://twitter.com/reneritchie/status/911382708391174145

"Samsung OLED is Samsung OLED But there’s tons Apple can do" - take that as you will, but it sounds like he's stepping down from any major customization.

That's true, I wondered what was causing the fringing around everything in that second image! 😱

There's red fringing around the icon and the numerals, orange fringing around the letters and a dark blue fringing around the icon on the left, with an aqua coloured fringing around the envelope in that icon!

Chromatic aberrations like that are sometimes introduced by over sharpening as an image is saved to jpeg though, so it could have possibly been introduced to the image in editing.

The high res photos from recently released reviews seem to confirm my fears, the graininess I found annoying in my Lumia 930 looks like it’s there on the X too 🙁 oh well, I guess I’m just going to stick with LCD as long as possible and hope they might crack blue diode lifespan in the meantime so we can return to regular subpixel layouts. If not I suppose i’ll have to get used to it, at least there’s the deeper blacks and richer colours to soften the blow somewhat.
