There is no such thing as an “audio quality test.” That’s a purely personal opinion and not in any way an objective test. Even audiophiles are always arguing with each other over what sounds best.

That's not true. There is an audio quality test. Engineers literally mic the headphone output and measure it to see how accurate they are compared to the original signal.

Well, I certainly don't love my 2nd gen AirPods. I knew it was a risk because the apple earbuds don't fit well in my ears at all. The Airpods don't fit my ears in the slightest. I have to wear them sticking out all weird and ridiculous to get them to stay at all. Not seen one person have to wear them like that and I look like an even bigger idiot having to wear them the way I do.

I do love how easy they connect to all my devices, especially with my shortcut application I created on all my Macs to connect them with a single click. Its a bigger pain to connect them to my phone...

I much prefer sound isolating headphones and will prolly give the Powerbeats a try. (Since bluetooth is only for phone calls and working out. True music listening I will stick to my audiophile setup)

Not a fan of the 'in ear canal" sensation these provide.
airpods for me feel better than something buried in my ear. Never been a fan of those types of buds.

This is exactly why I'm glad there are different options. The in Beats/in ear type designs are the only ones that work for me. I can't get the regular wired ear pods or the air pods to stay in my ears why doing anything but sitting still. Really looking forward to trying a pair of these out.

No mention of the W1 chip anymore. Is is gone? I like it because it eliminates the dropouts I have with other Bluetooth devices. Does newer Bluetooth technology eliminate the need for the W1 chip?

Sign me up. These are the first Apple true wireless buds that offer the option to change to foam. Done. Sold.

Where does it say that comply foam tips are compatible? If so, that would be amazing for better sound insolation, feel, and bass boost.

The Powerbeats Pro case does not feature support for Qi-based wireless charging and must be charged with a Lightning cable.

No wireless charging really means a lack of Qi.

Once you start using wireless charging you want to put everthing on that pad. Can‘t understand how they would deliver such a huge (ok, by comparison) case without a charging coil and circuit.

Beats always sound better than airpods. Airpods are not bad but Beats have way more body, actually too much and they will destroy your ears at full volume. I would take the Beats for a simple reason... Airpods fall from my ears, there is no grip, if you walk... ok, but any sudden movement they fall.... Nah. Anyway, I still use my wired headphones anyway, they were like $30 and sounds good enough.

This must really hurt Jony Ive’s brain.

powerbeatsproivory-800x521.jpg

There’s no way he designed these. They’re nicer than the last model but this isn’t Ive’s style at all. I’m guessing someone else his junior in the design studio was given the lead on Beats gear.

Combine the iPhone‘s hearing amplifying feature with that color and you might get them prescribed...

Why do people buy airpods?? They look ridiculous, and more importantly there are much much better options
I hate having things tight in the ear. I've always liked the AirPods (and buds-type pieces) because they sit somewhat loosely inside the ear. With headsets that stick way inside the ear - you might get better sound isolation and audio quality but then you can't hear too good any ambient noise that might be important (say you're inside a health club and you can't hear the fire alarm or perhaps some crazy lunatic getting ready to drop a set of dumbbells on you).

I've already seen an accident in NYC where a jogger was hit by a car and found out she never heard the car coming because of her bose-like ear pieces.

I don't think AirPods look ridiculous but I rather err on the side of caution and be able to hear ambient sounds while listening to my music (if they did make me look like I'm wearing earrings)....

I'm not a fan of the in-ear design (same comment for the Galaxy buds). I really like the comfortable fit of the airpods and for my uses, they are perfect. I use the motorola s9 for the gym. As they are dated today though, they work for what I need them to and have some sweat resistance.

The only thing I don’t get about this is the lack of wireless charging? I mean do they expect us to buy both this and the Airpods? I’m sure there will be some 3rd party add on but it’s not a huge deal for me.

$250 is steep but this does everything I want from a daily pair of headphones, so it’s a day 1 purchase for me.

Also, I had the Power Beats 2 and I did not like the ear tips but I replaced them and they were perfect afterwards. This case seems to have plenty of room inside so those that want to do some customization should be able to do it easily.

Don't knock the Amiga. Mac didn't catch up to Amiga until the late 90s.
Good eye! More of an Easter egg than an insult. From my limited knowledge, the Amiga was an amazing computer—ahead of its time and a pioneer of a few standards that are still in use today (or their descendants are). I've seen some of the stuff from the Amiga demo scene, and it was amazing for the time. :)

I'm not much of a collector, but I'd be interested getting an Amiga; they seemed to occupy that short transitory period between green or amber text on black displays and full-color GUIs as standard.

I can tell you that my gen.1 AirPods were in my swimsuit pocket last summer in their case. I went into the hot tub potion of the pool and was in there about 15 minutes. All that happened is the case stopped operating, but the AirPods worked just fine after I blew them out.

I have actually ran my first gen AirPods through a full 50 minute clothes washing machine cycle, AND 40 minute dryer cycle when I left them in my pants pocket. Thought I had ruined them. Pulled them out, charged them (the washing and drying killed the battery), and they’ve been working good as new for over 6 months. I think they are much tougher than given credit for.

i've worked out using airpods without any issues, and another guy in the gym was doing backflips in them(successfully). so unless you're sweating so profusely that it's going in your ears, i would just stick to airpods for working out.

It's an assumption, but from the PowerBeats3, it came with 4 different size tips. Those were silicon, but it's common that you can get something like Comply Foam tips for common sizes. I'd expect the tips to be the same size, as well. That's an assumption, but they were T-400's.
[doublepost=1554346039][/doublepost]As an aside, the black ones had those purple-to-orange vector images to point out the button... I actually thought they looked rad with the design that had that colour ring.

Black might be too black here... I dug the PB3 with the red tones. Didn't like the tech/dropouts, but they were gorgeous. Maybe I'll just get red foam tips...

I’ve always been a behind the ear headphone guy. I bike & do a lot of outdoor physical activities, and apple’s regular wired earbuds never stayed in my ears. So the thought of having an airpod pop out of my ear while biking thru the streets of NYC kept me from ever buying them.

But these powerbeat pros look perfect for me. I was thinking of buying some of those cheap rubber behind the ear attachments for the airpods they sell on Amazon...but they aren’t the most elegant or effective solution.

The powerbeat pros are expensive...but In the end, their 9 hrs of listening time really sold me. That coupled with the behind the ear design for my active lifestyle was a no brainer.

I personally feel that declaring AirPods "casual" in their use case is a misrepresentation of their versatility. I have trained for and run three marathons in the past year with my AirPods paired to my Apple Watch and they were an indispensable companion.

As usual no actual testing of the playback sound quality, or the microphone quality.

Why even bother writing the article?

AirPods and Powerbeats Pro might not cater to the same segment of the users.

I use AirPods in my daily use, for consuming audio books and office calls. Not my usecase, but they'd be useful for runs and workouts as well - helping me be aware of surroundings while also listening to music. Music, as far as airpods go, isn't exactly a priority for me.

Powerbeats pro are probably for the ones who want a wireless solution for music listening and want to block out surroundings to a higher degree.
