OK, this is Nucking Futs. I've been one of those telling people who ordered in February to basically shut up (although I was nicer about it) because they ordered so late.

But like Uber, I ordered the instant this machine was available online and now my ship date is "oob 4/10" ??? THIS is crazy. I REALLY wanted this machine. I forked over the money and went for it instead of the 15" and was willing to wait. But I NEED (not want, but actually NEED) this machine before 10 April.

I'm having difficulty expressing my anger right now. Rrrrgh.

Gavin

You need one ...

But I NEED (not want, but actually NEED) this machine before 10 April.
[/B]

You want to try developing a Flash MX project on a G3/400. Then you'll know what NEED is :)

This delay is not good ... christ knows when I'll get mine (in the UK). I think a call to the AppleStore is needed.

He's fallen in the water.

The Apple store says 4-6 weeks now, so that number is falling. But then all I hear of is dates being pushed out.

Jane, are you sure yours is coming the beginning of March? Spymac says units won't be shipping until end of March or April. Is this crazy or what? I may just cancel my order as this is extremely disappointing on Apple's part.

As one who is also waiting, I have to say that I don't think I would have chosen any other product line that apple has right now. This is a long wait but when we actually receive the 17" powerbook, it's going to be better than anything else out there including the desktop in my opinion. The idea of cancelling this order to purchase a 15" is bogus. You're not doing yourself any favors. I see this one lasting for quite some time with that nice size screen.

Dont cancel. Just wait it out. You will be extremely glad that you did. I am one that also has made the paper copy of 15 x 10.5. :D If only it really worked.

i cant believe anyone would purchase a system
that isnt even available yet. didnt someone
say something about a three month wait?
anyway...i think it was a premeture announcement.

i would hate to make a system purchase now
and not receive it till three months from now.
the computer industry moves to fast for that.
i would rather expect three months from now
that they would have faster chips and things...

The trick is to balance your need/desire to have the fastest chip versus your need/desire to have the "best" machine.

For those of us waiting in line for the 17" Powerbook, I believe we have chosen the latter.

I'm typing on a Pismo 500 G3, and raw processor speed is pretty much last on my list of at least 5 things I'm looking to improve upon by moving up to the 17".

If Apple bumps the speed to 1.25 Ghz in say June, I won't be bummed. Provided the machines don't have major flaws (go AppleCare!), I'll be more proud to own one of the original 17" PowerBooks.

I've ordered this Because the computer industry moves so fast.

My Dual 1Ghz was stolen over Xmas - I NEED a new machine. But I hope/pray/expect new chip/design desktops from Apple this year. So - I buy a top range powerbook and I'll still have a stunning 2nd machine when I upgrade the desktop.

my original comment should of been directed
towards apple making you guys wait so long.
hope you get your system soon.

i just cant wait to get mine
i keep salivating everytime i see a pic

cmon...no matter how good the machine is...we know the real reason we forked over the 4 grand....its cuz its goregous and everytime we bring it out ...its gonna make everysingle person who can see....freak with jelousy. i just cant wait for that..cant wait to show it to all my microsuck supporting friends

vive la Apple!

Okay, I got pissed this morning. Checked inbox, here was an e-mail from Apple telling me they're sorry for the delays but my 17" powerbook is coming the third week of March. So i got all pissed and called and complained, and they told me it was shipping the second week.
So i suppose there's no point in waiting for the PB to come. I think i'm going to cancel my order and wait until the day I can walk into the Apple Store and get one.

the PB was gonna be my first mac and now im thinkin bout doing the same Jane
this wait is driving me insane
but i cant help but think that the day it does arrive ill finally blow my load ..:D and the wait woulda been worthwhile
mine now says 4/25
so if any1 gets it before me....please....and i mean PLEASE do us all a favor and post pics and do a nice lengthy review of it?

A nice SHORT thing I just came up with that makes no sense at all:
I love the 17" Aluminum PowerBook G4 from Apple. With the expansive 17" LCD, the backlit keyboard with the two ambient light sensors that constantly adjust the settings, Airport Extreme and built in Bluetooth, I can do virtually everything I want from Mail, iChat and Safari to Pro Tools, Final Cut Pro and iLife anytime I want, anywhere. Everything works beautifully on this wickedly fast machine with a 1ghz G4 processor. And for under 4 grand, it's worth it!
And of course it's the best machine i've ever used for programming.

better than a Powermac G4 with blazing fast dual 1.43 GHz G4 processors, a speedy 4x superdrive and iDVD for professional-looking home movies on DVD, half a terabyte of space across four cooking 7200 RPM 180 GB hard drives, and an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro to boot, all coming to you in living color through a 23 inch cinema HD display? man, that's an incredible 6.8 lbs of aluminum!

Does anyone know how long it will be before Apple stores get in the new PowerBooks?

i talked to my apple store guy a couple weeks ago and he told me that they will recieve a couple of them in around the 1st of march (prob. delayed further by now). he told me that they will have some to display and some to sell. he then told me that i should fill out the contact me thing on one of the display macs and that they would let me know when the pb arrives. he said to come right in tho cuz they will only hold it for me for about a day. this all sounds nice but i just dont buy it with all of the shipping dates being pushed back.. its too bad.

I was surfing the powerbook central and saw the following statement:

"I spoke to someone who is close to inside people at Apple and I hear that the 17 inch PowerBook is not shipping because after using the first few ones that were around, the users found that the screen was not placed on a rigid enough backing (the top of the PowerBook) and tended to crack. That could make sense considering the size of the screen and the Aluminum casing. I hear that they are trying to resolve the issue and that is what is holding the shipments back."

Übergeek, can you confirm this? Does the screen feel weak or soft? This could be a reasonable excuse for Apple to delay the shipments till they fix the problem. If it really is the problem that is.

Thanks
/ filipp

Just remember that it may take a while for you to be able to walk in to a store and get a 17" PowerBook. Your fastest option might be to just leave your order in place.

Unless you have other reasons for canceling it?

Apple has shipped limited numbers of 17-inch PowerBooks to corporate users, I'm told. A friend of mine (PC User) said he got one, and is very impressed.

He could just be an idiot and referring to a 12-incher, though.

LOL, hard to mix up 12 and 17 inchers...
Anyway, I was thinking of the same thing, since my supplier keeps saying on or before 28:th Feb. My powerbook is #2 order at the swedish distributors list, but I doubt that I will get mine before others though.

I guess of a scenario like this:
The american corporate resellers get the 17PB first, around last week of feb / first week of march.
A week or two later, other resellers get their, translated powerbooks.
When those lists are filled, they start shipping to individuals, mostly to appleStore-buyers.

Well, that's what I think.

P.S. Because of the hardware-delay, the manuals and other documents may already be translated when shipments start, then we can see the powerbooks poping up all around the world.

could be true but i played with a 12" and the back seemed extremely strong when compared to the 15". you had to put a lot of force onto the back to make the screen distort while on the 15" only a little force would make the screen distort. also isnt this alluminum stuff stronger than the old titanium?

fine, one of the best. The best laptop hands down though.
I checked out the LCD, it doesn't feel *that* bad, perhaps a little flimsy but strong.
And of course aircraft grade aluminum is pretty strong but titanium has that look I like. Both metals are highly durable.

Apple store order shipped today

Well, I just got an email from the Apple store saying my order had shipped today.

And, it was just the brenthaven case. Heartbeat, back to normal.
