I'd go ahead and get one now. You're getting:

-10.4 Tiger (something a lot of us just paid $69-129 for)
-iLife 05' (something a bunch of us plunked down $50-79 for a few months ago)
-A core-image supported graphics card (so you get the cool dashboard ripple)
-A backlit keyboard (on the bigger ones...pretty freakin' sweet)
-A laptop that can screen span along with a ton of nice ports that don't need odd adapters.
-A bunch of other nice bundled software.

Fearing for the future will only make you unhappy now. Be happy, buy a Powerbook now.

If you can wait, do it.

Same dilemna

I faced the same dilemna.
To buy or not to buy.
The reason I purchased now is as follows:

1. There has just been a slight upgrade in pbooks (1.5 -> 1.67 processors)
2. The pbooks have been around awhile, so any problems have been sorted out ages ago.
3. I am a techno junkie, and usually adopt new technologies as they come out, but you can't spend your life keeping up with the Joneses.
There is always going to be something brighter, shinier and newer than the product you just purchased.
Prices will always drop the day after you get your goodies.

Buy now, the existing range of pbooks will still be good for another 2 or 3 years. Any new models that come out will be expensive and untested.

don't wait. jusst do it. you will be happy.

It seems like you are getting a LOT of mixed advice.

People have outlined the following for you:

On the "Buy" Side:

They were only updated a few months ago.
The power they already have is incredible.
The price is right.

On the "Wait" Side:

WWDC is only five weeks away.
There are three possible update options, all of which would be exciting.
The price could drop.

Clearly, you have been presented with options that have both positives and negatives. I would recommend waiting JUST until WWDC. I know it's hard to wait, I'm waiting myself... but I want to see.

I'm WAITING.

I am waiting too. Seems like the people that say buy, have already bought. Maybe they don't want to be the only ones left behind when the new pbooks come out, or maybe they just really think that is the best option right now.

BUT,
Didn't Steve say that there would be 12 new hardware changes within the next couple of months or something like that.

I think with apple stocks sliding that a new powerbook release, along with other new hardware releases might really help the company.

I bought in Jan right after the 12" went Rev. D. I don't look back at all. With that said, dual core or G5, this PB might find its way into another owner's hands. But at that point, you have to wonder how the laptops will stack up for price/features.

I recommend going to the Apple store. Play with a 15" Powerbook, if you feel like taking it home, go! If they get updates soon, your Book will still work fine. Remember there is always a second hand market/
