Promise of free upgrades, bull factor 10

Apple's policy has been:

Those who purchase a computer on or after the date of the new OS X update can get the new OS for $19.95.

As far as the video card, I am hoping for an ATI 9600, but I am thinking it'll be at most a nVidia GeForce 5200 FX or something. It seems like Apple is favoring the nVidia brand lately...oh well, anything will be better than the 8 meg ATI Rage 128 I have in my PowerBook now.

and all us that got already our machines would be drooling over yours till its time for us to upgrade !!! :p

I just got back from the local Apple dealer and they said they can't get get me a 15" PB until their Canadian distributor gets a new shipment in (said is not expected until August 28). Hopefully, this means an update is coming next week :)

Well, I have been drooling for about 3 years now...first they updated my Lombard with the Pismo, with more RAM, faster G3, firewire...then the G4....along with airport, then as time went on, L3, BT, even more RAM...and each update just more and more to want until now my G3 PowerBook is laughed at by even the oldest and slowest iBook consumer laptops...I just cannot wait for my new PowerBook....please let it be next week!

...In addition, I would also like to note that the 12" still only has a 16mb video card which is one reason why I did not purchase the powerbook when it was released...

um, what? the 12"PB has a 32 mb graphics card.

It better have those features after such a long wait.

I've posted this before, but this is what I want in order to shell out over 2 grand on this thing:

15.4" high resolution screen
Radeon 9600 Mobile
USB 2.0 and Firewire 400 and 800
Bluetooth and Airport Xtreme
2X Superdrive
1.3+ GHz G4
Backlit keyboard
True DDR RAM
Larger Hard Drive

That's really not too much to expect considering the time frame they've had.

Suppose Apple announces a speedbumped 12" PowerBook for the same price as the current 867MHz, but they continue to offer the 867MHz PowerBook, at a lower price. Would people who had ordered but not taken delivery get a choice of a lower price or a faster machine? What about people who had taken delivery less than 10 days before?

Does this kind of grandfathering only apply to Apple stores or does it also apply to purchases made through universities?

If it were me (and oh, it will be if this upgrade cuz it's ordered does happen), I'd definitely take the new 12" pb over the old one even if it was to be cheaper. I already got a steal on the one I ordered! Might as well keep the same budget and take more power rather than downgrade and save what, maybe a hundred bucks? It's just not worth it.

I don't see them putting the price too much lower on the older pbs if new upgraded ones are released because then it'd be a complete ripoff to buy an ibook...lol. They wouldn't want to sabatoge their ibook line, would they?

Hehe, yeah, good point. I actually had a friend who tried to convince me into an ibook...he questioned how I could take a pass on the "corruptable purity" of a fresh, white ibook. To me, the ibook vs. powerbook question all came down to media processing abilities and the pb looks like it'll be able to do that better.

that's not true. I mean it comes with 256MB DDR(although the current G4 does not take full advantage of it) it does come with a better graphics card it does have more HD, AE, bluetooth, it can have an SD, and for goodness it does have a G4 ie and Altivec processor. I mean it is not an iBook even a "glorified" one. I think this does not make justice of the form factor of it - it is smaller than the iBook it has a much better keyboard I mean way better I love the trackpad and the screen and the speed. I think it is worth the name PB. Given it's size it already fits a lot in there.

Can you post a photo of the coupon your friend received?

I will talk to him after work. I know it wasn't my imagination because he was bumbed that he couldn't wait til Panther came out to get his ibook. I will find out and post ASAP.

It just seems to me that we are looking at a future iBook G4 in the current 12" PowerBook...maybe not now...maybe not next week...but perhaps next year the "new" G4 iBook will look an awful like a reskinned 12".

Very nice :) This makes me sit here and think that I'm going to be so much happier with my pb than I would w/a maxed out 12" ibook. My friend who was trying to convince me into ibook over pb pointed out that the battery life is longer, the case is more durable, it doesn't heat up as much, it can probably do most functions besides altivec related ones just as fast, it's cheaper, etc. He made a good argument, but it just wasn't good enough to make me think ibook over pb. (The supderdrive is something that definitely screams for one to pick pb if they have a use for it)

The battery is longer on the iBooks and that is because mainly Apple used a lower capacity battery for the PB and I still haven't understood why maybe the battery is smaller than the iBook but it is a Li battery in contrast of a conventional one on the iBook as far as I am aware.

Now more durable casing? I dont know I mean my PB has been dropped twice I dont have a case or specific bag for it I just stuff it together with lots of other stuff in my back pack i have gone mountain biking with it it has travelled to USA once once in Greece and once in Scotland and it has not a scratch not one sigle scratch.

It does get hotter but I am pretty sure this is because Al is a much better heat conductor than plastic. I believe a 12" iBook in the same casing would be very hot too.

I have seen an iBook side by side with my PB and the PB feels quite a bit snappier I mean I didn't test it or anything but it did feel faster. Both had 256MB and the iBook was an 800MHz one.

And as about the 1x SD there is firmware to make it 2x and in any case the 15" SD is 1x and so is the 17" one right?

THE 19th IS A TUESDAY!

ANYONE ELSE NOTICE THAT!?

People are saying powerbook shiping delayed 'till the 19th, AKA NEXT TUESDAY!

ITS been so long without an update it has to happen Tuesday!

Yep, usually when there is a rumored "date", the first thing Macheads do is check the cal to see if it falls on a Tuesday. :D It seems almost like clockwork that Tuesday is the magical day.

Looks like nobody is expecting anything out of the ordinary from the new Powerbook - inceased speed perhaps, F800, airport extreme, backlit keyboard blah blah blah. Are there any thoughts that Apple may shake the market up a bit like they did with the 17" Powerbook launch...

.....how about a dual processor powerbook?
