Meh. I'm not going to have it on my lap while I'm waiting for it to burn a DVD anyway. Of course, I'll have to make sure it's not sitting on anything combustible.

Well, my PowerBook G3 has warped the table it sits on already and that's with a cooler running G3 as opposed to the much hotter G4 systems...

Mmm... I can actually use my 667 TiBook resting on my knees and it doesn't get too hot for comfort. And that's wearing shorts. But I'm strangely heat tolerant (unless it's ambient heat, and that's a different story).

Apple something or other?

If the 15s are updated next Monday, I'm buying one.

As many others have mentioned, Panther will be coming out soon and we don't want to pay full price for it in a month if we get a new powerbook a week from now. Someone in my office mentioned something about Apple Up To Date program or something with a similar name. It supposedly allows you to get new stuff (such as an operating system) that you would have gotten if you had bought your laptop some amount of time later. Has anyone used this before? If so, how much did it cost to get Jaguar with it? The page is down now, so I can't look. Just curious. If it's only $30 bucks, it would be worth it for having the laptop the extra month.

I ordered a Ti-book from the university bookstore on 7/31. The shipping day was originally 8/1. Then it was delayed to 8/8 and then 8/11. I went to the bookstore today and the staff said apple told him now the powerbook will not be shipped anytime before 8/19. Clearly something is up next tuesday!

The ti-book was a great deal, 15.2' 1GHz model for $2035 with 3 years of Applecare. I am worry I cannot get the same deal when something new has come, but maybe with a little bit more money I can have a much cooler laptop.

We'll see......

he he ...

Actually that is one thing I really hope they have corrected in the new batch of PB's - heat problems... as well as course more speed, thinner, backlit, more memory, L3 cache, FW 800, ... ;)

stock dates, etc...??

can anyone speak from experience on the following subjects, assuming Apple makes an "available now" type announcement on Tuesday:

1. is it worth me, as another post said above, sitting by the laptop waiting untill the second the release the new PB to place an order online? If i wait a day or 2 do you think it would really make much of a difference in terms of when i get the unit? I guess what i am asking is, historically, when they release a new product that is said to be available "now" how soon do i need to order to get it immideatly before the shelves are empty?

2. Barring the above question, I have every intention of going to my nearest Apple store in Cambridge, MA to pick up my PB (after a call to make sure it is there of course) Can anyone offer an opinion of the Apple stores themselves getting product in a timely manner? i know CompUSA, etc, usually takes a long time to get product in. I assume the Apple stores themselves are quick to get in "available now" products? Are they near the same timeline as the actual Online stores?

Jaguar costed 20$ for systems that were sold up to 4 weeks before the jag release ( i am not sure if it was 4 weeks or 30 days but something like that)

Mmm...15" AlBook and Panther...match made in heaven? I'd say so! :D

Yep, and at this rate you'll be dead and presumably in heaven before you get either.

Unless of course you have been very very bad, in which case you might get sent to DELL! :p

I've sat here trying to think of something clever that rhymes with being in limbo, but I'm stumped.

So, all signs point to the 19th, or are they just selling too many PowerBooks to keep them in stock and Moto is slow as usual? I want to believe, too, but I'm worried.

If it's "shipping now" it will be probably be at least a few days before the Apple Store will get them in stock; and likely a few days before the online Apple Store will actually ship an order.

If it's "available immediately", often the new product has shipped in advance to retail Apple Stores and can be purchased that same day. If not, my experience has been that the Apple Store will put you on a hold list and call you when the item arrives so you have first right of refusal.

Supposing new PowerBooks are introduced next Tuesday, it remains to be seen if Apple will "announce" the new notebooks or ship them. If it's just an announcement, actual product may be delayed for a few days, or even as long as six weeks. Perhaps the new 12s will be available immediately, the 17s in two weeks, and 15s in a month. You see what I mean.

Also, it's far from a foregone conclusion that Apple will do anything next Tuesday. The shipping delay of current 15s until 19th August is certainly notable, but it depends on how you're interpreting the data. It could be numerous rumor sources indicate the 19th and the shipping delay supports the interpretation of this day as an announcement date. Or it could be that numerous reports of shipping delays until 19th August have spawned rumors that new PowerBooks will be announced on that day.

While it's always fun to see what Apple is announcing, I do find myself so much more serene on those occasions when I've neither recently bought nor am I planning to buy a new Mac.

I could only wish...but with heat issues, 2x seems to be the more optimistic expectation...4x would be dreaming!

One thing to keep in mind. Some people have reported greater success (meaning fewer errors) burning DVDs at 1x--even with 2x media and 2x drives. If time is not critical, IMO its best to burn at 1x--to reduce the risk of a coaster.

apparently this has turned into "Ye Olde Rhyming Thread" oh well, I am game:

Who left the Powerbooks on a Log
He sent them adrift
The consumers were mift
And pondered the rumors 'til Tuesday

Nope, I really like this little Sony sub-portable, 10.6" widescreen with 1280x768 resolution, a built-in optical drive (very rare among true subportables) all weighing just 3.11lbs, too bad it doesn't run OSX...
