I currently have the dual 500 sonnet card [brand new], but now I'm thinking I should sell it & wait for the 1ghz powerlogix card for the cube instead.......

is a 20cfm fan enough to cool the duet & gf3 card in the cube?

XLR8 ?

Anyone for info on XLR8 's reply to these cards?
I am running a Mach Carrier G3/450 at 500Mhz in my 8600/250.
Wondering if they do an upgrade like that for an G4-AGP, with like that I mean my expirience with the G3 card (almost plug and play and a noticeable speed gain)
:) ;)

so you really think a 1ghz apollo is better than dual 500mhz?

I just put in a request to purchasing to upgrade a 350 mhz G4 w/ the dual 500s for $599.

The 1ghz will be $749 and they do say 'ranging' from 750mhz to 1ghz for both the 100mhz bus and 133 bus... 750 starts at $449.

Hope they don't screw the UK like they usually do!

The cheapest I can get the 450Mhz Powerforce G4 Zif in the UK is £299 ($439) in the US it's only $319. I can't even buy the 550Mhz Powerforce G4 Zif, There's a UK distributor but no dealers stock it that I'm aware of but it's bound to be at least £299 + V.A.T. like the 450Mhz one.

I was looking at a cheap speed increase for my beige G3 later in the year seeing as affording to buy a new mac is out of the question for me in quite some time.

It seems for the price of an upgrade in the UK, it makes a lot more sense to just shop around for a used G4 tower. At least having an older mac would mean getting extra features like AGP and a reasonable ATA controller.

But that poses another problem, 2 old macs to get rid of when I buy new, I imagine I'd lose less in the long run buying a used G4 and forgetting about the upgrades altogether but whatever way I look at the pro and cons of the UK pricing of upgrade cards or even their overall usefulness, they're an expensive investment that shouldn't cost as much as they do over here.

Sorry to rant, it's just a bit unfair that's all.

Try OWC

Other World Computing, if they ship to you, has some great deals on G4 upgrades to the beige G3...for about $100 as I recall!

If you look at it like this:

750 = 7.5 x 100
1000 = 7.5 x 133

So, Cube owners may only be able to push their Cubes to 750MHz, especially when one considers the writing style of the press release. The article seems shady on details, so I wouldn't expect a Cube upgrade beyond 750Mhz, at least for a while.

That would be true only if the Apollo were limited to a 7.5 bus multiplier which they are not.

How do you think Apple are getting 1ghz and some overclockers up to 1.2ghz out of currently shipping Apollo based Macs?

That was merely an assumption based upon sketchy details from PowerLogix. Rather than my prediction, both upgrade cards will be available up to 1GHz, or until Motorola releases faster Apollo's.

Cards take forever to come out

The upgrade cards come out about everytime the speeds double. The last series was 400-500 and the new one is 750-1000.
