My response

I am not sure either. Those with dual core and Quads should be having ZERO problems watching 720p/1080p. With the 7800GTX 512MB I can even watch 4096p videos though I don't have a monitor capable of such high resolution. I assume 4096p is retina?

Because playing a Youtube video or running a video player makes no use at all of 3 x of your CPU's - It only uses one, so for this particular topic a Quad has zero advantage over a DC - it's just CPU speed and (maybe) the type of GPU you have installed. Mine is a 2.3 (only 200hz slower than a 2.5) and it also runs HD video buttery smooth (on XBMC, but thats all I use) - So we're trying to find out why some people get HD playback issues and others do not.

Remember a Quad / Dual only makes use of more than one CPU when the app you are running is SMP aware - YouTube/Flash/MacTubes/etc. is not.

I can get screenshots on thursday.

If you really want to prove it. You should be taking a physical (not a screencast) video showing the About This Mac box, the machine itself, along with the display wire connected to the monitor, the system info plist, proving that you haven't changed the info that way, and say Twitter from the Mac App Store.

Yep, that's about it. That would shut us up.

I will get that done, but first I need to fix my dumb yaboot, my linux partition where the emulator is turned ubootable... Any ideas? It is basically a hackintosh running on emulation. How do I get a yaboot dvd? Is there such thing as a yaboot dvd, like grub for intel macs. It is lubuntu linux with the qemu installed.

It really should be against the rules here to spread lies and misinformation. Some users here might see your posts and get the wrong idea.

But what I'm really interested in seeing isn't any of the above, but how you managed to make your Quad G5 clock 4700 on Geekbench, which somehow is also simultaneously much faster but also unnoticeably different from your FX-8350.

Don't forget to take into account the few hours it'll take to get it all to boot.

Hello,
I have been looking at getting a Quad G5 and I just want to know anyone that has one, will I be able to play HD youtube video without stuttering? And also would I be able to play Netfilx or amazon videos without problems? The powermac would have 4 Gb of ram if that made a difference.

Thanks!

My Quad G5 has been my pro tower for many years, and I'm also an Amazon Prime subscriber.

Can I play HD YouTube videos without stuttering? Yes, in 1080p.
Can I play Amazon Prime videos without problems? Yes.

Apple may have left us out in the cold, but Late 2005 G5s are still more than able to pull their weight, providing the software is capable.

Yes, you CAN play 720p and 1080p based youtube videos and movies without a hitch. I think the whole 11,2 Dual Core series of G5's should be able to handle flash very well and depending on what codecs you use you also can display 4096p video as well..

Just the other day I was viewing a demo of a 4096p video on my G5 Quad.. It took a while to load, but it can be done and without choking.

Yes, Apple and everyone else might have left us, but the soul of the PowerPC still lives on... because it was and still is considered a REAL Mac where as the Intel Macs feel like overstuffed PC's with just OS X on them,

PowerPC macs were and still are unique. Nothing compares to their beauty in case design. Jonny Ive is to be rewarded for providing us with such nice case designs.

Today's Intel Macs are dull and boring.

Heh. A fellow PowerPC fanatic, I see. :D

I've had to move on from most of my other PowerPC machines because they're just too weak, although I retain my 1 GHz PowerBook G4 Titanium for OS9 booting fun and for writing because it has my favorite Apple portable keyboard.

I've got a hotrodded PowerMac G4 Digital Audio 733 that I keep around for fun (also scarfed up literally the last NewerTech Dual 1.8 7448 upgrade on the market to put in it last year). It's too old to use for work anymore so it's retired, but it's my Mac equivalent to a 60s muscle car you tinker with and keep running purely for fun. The Zip drive and the case are literally the only parts left in it that haven't been replaced or upgraded over the years!

I refuse to let my Quad G5 die or get retired yet though; this thing is still a godlike machine with tons of e-horsepower. Especially since I stuck the Velociraptor in it last year as the startup drive; breathed new life into it.

Hehe.. Thanks for the comment! Yeah, you could say I am a PowerPC fanboi though I also made a Hackintosh out of my Gateway P-7805u FX gaming laptop and it runs Mountain Lion, Lion, and Snow very well, almost as good as a real macbook pro.

Yes, the Quad G5 is still a beast of a machine and I use mine for everyday use. I don't plan on retiring mine at all. I also use a PowerBook G4 1.67 DLSD for my everyday use while on the road.

The best PowerPC machines I can recommend as having pure muscle to run todays stuff are:

MDD G4 dual 1.25 and dual 1.42 and the G5 dual core series, including the Quad.

What codecs are you using? Depending on how the 4096p video was processed, it will play it but takes a long time to stream it.

No 4096 here, but I have been playing 1080p buttery smooth on an apple alu cinema display on my quad using xbmc.

I have the ability to buy a Power Mac G5 Quad. I have never owned a mac, but I would like to get one.

The specs are:
G5 Quad 2.5Ghz
5GB Ram
500 GB Hard Drive
17inch Apple Monitor + KB & Mouse

I can get the whole package for $250, would you say that's a deal? I am worried about complications in using it software wise. Being locked down sucks. Can anyone make me feel better about purchasing it?

If you think Mac's are locked down you ain't seen nothing yet. There is little support for PowerPC and you're going to get frustrated. If you're bored get it but please keep in mind it's not a contemporary Mac. The quad will deal just fine with most stuff it'll even deal with flash once you get it sorted..Have fun

Hey peeps ^.^
So, I was wondering how the PM G5 performs with netflix?
And is there any sort of G5 I can hook up 4x 20" Alu ACD's to?
Thanks a bunch

It doesn't (directly) as netflix requires Intel Mac. Intell posted clever streaming workaround, though.

Any G5 is capable of doing that. PCIe one will need 2 graphics cards, AGP one will need 3 (1x dual DVI AGP + 2x PCI - there's no dual DVI PCI card that would work on a Mac AFAIK).

As we have all on here been saying to you.. If you want the G5 Quad or any PowerMac PowerPC machine keep in mind that its not contemporary and software will be hard to find for it.

But, if you plan on using it for everyday stuff and don't need high end software then by all means come aboard and enjoy! I can help you also as if you need anything I can provide it to you. The best version of iMovie for the G5 Quad would be iMovie 08 as 09 is Intel only.

Awesome! Thanks for the info, really considering giving up my PC workstation for a PM now :D

Wow thank you so much, such a helpful guy! :D <3
I'm about to create a thread about what I need :3
Edit: Thread made, I fear for I am becoming a PPC fanatic :D (and loving it)
