Well it is bad, why no x800pro or GT6800non ultra/ ultra????????

STEV what are you thinking?

Well, PPC970FX, we'll introduce the 2.5'er before the WWDC, with an almost top level video card and than when everybody thinks I going to eat crow at WWDC I'm going to intro a 3.0 GHz with an x800. Mean while we've got about two weeks to clear the inventory of these 1.8 and 2.0 G5's. Al the s*ckers that were waiting for the upgrade will buy them now!!

woooooohooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

baby here i come.

new things to do this week: see bank re loan.

call apple.

ok, new systems gonna be 2 x 1.8ghz dual proc G5's.
2 x 23" displays
upgrade to ATi 9800 card in one, ATi 9600 card on the other.

(ne1 know a good place to buy cheap RAM (not paying apple prices ;), ditto whats a good hard drive to whack in as a secondary, big bastards.....)

gigabit ethernet cards

Adobe CS

yayyyyyy i just saved over $2000! not to mention the saved frustrations i'll have by getting these demon celerons out of my life!!

I'm slightly underwhelmed by this update. Not that I've been desperate for a bump to 3GHz, but the whole package seems a bit stagnant given it's the first proper update in a year. 25% processor speed increase isn't too shabby though I suppose. Disappointed with no PCI-X on base model and no PCI-Express either, but I guess it's not a mature enough technology yet for inclusion?

I still think Steve will pull a 3GHz model out of his ass at WWDC to keep us on our toes.

Just need to choose which model to get to replace a Quicksilver 867MHz here at work. Also been holding out for the very slim possibility of PowerBook G5s to replace an ageing TiBook 500MHz too. Think I'll sit tight until end of this month and see what else turns up.

ok, god to know

you are evil in a god way

i'm hanging.......

.......to get my order in, but this still won't see me laying out the best part of $20k of the hard earned until after the WWDC.

don't get me wrong, i'll prolly still get 1.8's (i'm in the market for two systems see? :p) with some tweaks as thats more than enough grunt for my work and i rekon saving $2000 on the boxes is pretty sweet.

that said, apple is prolly flogging the warehouse to make room, WWDC may still hold some surprises.

either way, given i currently run a celeron 500, win'98 and out-of-date software i admit a G4 system would probably be enough of a speed boost. but stuff it, i'm buying the 64bit technology. huge performance gain over my current system, no?

ahhh, paradise awaits and the M$-demons of my deskspace will be replaced by the angels of user-friendliness.

Relax People

Steve said 3 gHz by THE END OF THIS SUMMER, not the end of spring folks. And if they don't, it's not his fault, it's IBM's. He wouldn't have made that promise if the bigwigs at IBM hadn't promised HIM speed increases.

Sheesh.

Give 'em an inch, and they want a mile, every time. Remember, our market is much smaller than the PC market, so yeah, we have to put up with slow speed increases, longer wait times between new models, etc. I'm fine with that. I'd rather have a 3 year old Mac than a brand-spanking new PC anyday.

I'm not sure if some of you GPU complainers also noticed that the BTO 9800XT is actually running with 256 mb !! And it only costs about $80 AU to put in a 9600XT card, not too shabby.

deals at the apple store

i just picked up a dual 1.8 g5, the LAST version... its better and awesome deal!.

$1799 for the older one! don't miss out, try to contact your local apple store for a REAL G5 thats not stripped down.

I'm curious, have all the problems with Rev. A been corrected in Rev. B. such as noise and electrical?

Is there really a big difference between the 9600 XT & 9800 XT video card?

Should there be any concerns with the new water cooling unit in the new 2.5?

I don't know about the issues but I know that the Radeon 9800XT is a great card. Its performance is almost 80% better than the 9600 one.

My nine-month-old dual-2 has had zero electrical problems, and even with the audio hooked up via optical to a stereo, I've noticed no audio problems, so I suspect a bad bunch of parts that affected only some G5s. Or perhaps I got a good bunch of parts that helped only some G5s. In either case, I'd guess that the audio stuff has been solved long before now.

As far as electrical is concerned: as part of diagnosing a problem that eventually led to the true culprit (my 20" Cinema Display's power button), I was informed in November that they had a new series of power supplies for the G5, so I suspect that any problems were likely remedied by that, although, again, I've had no issues at all.

There is a big difference between the 9600XT and 9800XT (assuming they're annything like the 9600/9800 differences, or the 9x00XT differences in the PC world - the 9800XT is substantially faster. However, you need to decide if the speed bump is worth the $300 premium. Personally, my "ancient" 9600 (non-XT) still works fine in all that I do, including the occasional game (Halo, WCIII, etc). So my guess is that, unless you're an avid FPS gamer, the 9800XT would be a waste of your money. Just my opinion. YMMV.

As far as water cooling is concerned: it's been used for years in other equipment, so I think the basic technology is sound. I'd strongly recommend AppleCare in any event, and that would cover any problems shoudl they occur. However, given that the G5 case is stronger than most tank frames, I doubt anythings going to muck with the water cooler, and it's very unlikely that, internally, there will be corrosion issues. Again, it's possible, but that's what AppleCare is for. I don't think you need to worry about it.

Of course, if it's a big issue, I'll sell you my dual-2. :) We're both in the Boston area...
