Thanks for your advice Forced Perfect, I have ordered an X800 card. I will let you know how I go.

If you can find the fan/heatsink from an X850 card on its own, I'd recommend getting it too.

Tomorrow (maybe) I will pull out my card and do an article on replacing the fan on the card.

It's MUCH better than the stock X800 fan.

I tossed together a quick article and took some photos of the fan mod (see attached file).

I'd stick it online, but I did it in iWeb and www.forcedperfect.net is still using my PHP-based site which I am too lazy to update. When I finally switch my site over to either iWeb or RapidWeaver (depending on which one sucks less) I'll stick it online.

This Safari web archive file should work... if the images and formatting don't work let me know.

Thanks for this Forced, I will look into replacing the fan when I can.
I was unable to get the card to work in "safe mode" using 10.4.

I am assuming that I put the new card in, and boot using safe mode and I should see at least some video, that allows me to log in and use the gui based Graphiccelerator to flash the card with the reduced rom file.

I am not sure what difference it will make but I will install 10.5 and give it another go.
Failing this I will try and find a PC with a floppy drive and flash it using a dos tool of some sort.

Before flashing the card you will NOT see any video at all. You must either use a second computer using Remote Desktop, flash it on a PC or use a program which will automatically flash it at startup. Google flashing instructions if you need help.

Goodmorning all,

I'd like to know which AGP card is the best for a PowerMac G5 2x2GHz mid-2005, AGP8x

I heard agout a sapphire radeon HD 3850 or XD 1650. Are those cards ok for PowerMac G5 ?

Thank you for your help.

To get already flashed cards look on ebay.

For old offical cards look on ebay.

Just beware of scammers and fakes as always.

Arf :( I thought new AGP card could replace my "old" card without flashing or what else ...

Thank you for your answers guys :)

I doubt you will find any still sealed in plastic except maybe a 9800.

For good cards likte the Nvidia 6800 Ultra or the Ati X800 I don't think you could them still new in the box.

The flashed 7800 is the best card you can get.

If the 3850 or 1650 were ever available from Apple in an AGP format they would work. Since they never were, they never will be.

7800 GS has such a loud fan that it sounds as if the hairdryer is still on in the bathroom.
I removed the POS fan, which is not controllable by the AGP G5, at all, and placed a silent, $2 Sunon case fan on top of the heatsink fins.
It had a two-pin power connector, so, rather than mod it to a 3-pin, I stripped the tips and spliced it with the Molex connector(which the 7800 needs) and let the 0.8W come from that. 9 Months, and no problems! This fan keeps my GPU around 50º. DO NOT try to use a low fan or no fan at all. I foolishly experimented with no fan, and just the decent copper heatsink....from 0-100 in 30 mins. Not good.
The case-fan takes up a bit of height, making the use of port 2/4 possible, but iffy, but most will not mind.

PS there are no aftermarket passive heatsinks that fit this card. Put up with the stock fan, or replace it, are the only options.

I don't consider 6800's any good.. 6800's were and are like the SUV's of AGP video cards, bloated and draw too much energy for middling performance; I've gone through 3 of them, one used, the other two brand new; if using them in a stock G4, the G4's power supply blows out and has to be replaced or you have to use fewer RAM chips.

If you use them in a G5 they burn out anyway because regular PC versions have an anemic stock cooler. The 6800's that Apple put in G5s had different, higher power coolers and drew power from that little aux slot intended to provide power for ADC monitors.

X800XTs are good but no one's managed to figure out how to flash a PC version with a ROM that will give you DVI support, you only can have VGA / analog out

I'm slightly offended, the 68000 was the gpu in my old 2.7ghz G5, it was a huge beast! Dual Slot. :p

Now I am rocking the Ati 3870 on my Mac Pro,

Just as an update to my original post about flashing a Radeon X800 with an X850 cooler.

After all this time it still works perfectly. (Yay? :p)

One thing I noticed is the cooler does like to clog up with some cat fur after a few months. So I wipe it off every 3-4 months. It doesn't cause any problems, but the reduced air flow forces the fan to run faster.

I still fully recommend using an X800 with an upgraded cooler (X850 ones kick ass!)

Still getting 20-30 FPS in Dalaran in World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King. My wife's PowerBook G4 (Radeon 9600 Mobile) gets 0-10. :p

I read on some forum they made progress on the digital output, but I have not looked into it fully as I am still using a crappy CRT.

Should have been clearer; I was ragging on using flashed PC 6800s; if you can still get Apple's 6800s or a good reference model with the original reference cooler, those are pretty good

Never get 6800s from LeadTek though, their cooler is massive and ridiculous and also sucks in a G5

Does anyone know if it's possible to reflash HIS Radeon 3850 512MB IceQ 3 for mac? This is the fastest (and quietest) AGP video card you can get so I'm wondering if this would be a possibility???

If so then this would be the best AGP graphics card you can put into pre-PCI Express PowerMac G5.

I'm currently running a GeForce 7800 GS in my PowerMac G5.

Maybe you stated this back in February but "this thread" started in April so I woudn't have seen your comment. Thank you for your NOT GONNA HAPPEN quote though.

A simple sorry bud but you aren't going to see this would have been good enough....

I am not sure what point you are trying to make.

In any case, TRY READING THE THREAD. It is only two pages and answers your question quite well.

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but it seems right

Hey guys, it's my first post here- but I'm a seasoned forum vet:

http://www.head-fi.org/forums/members/nick-214/

I recently inherited a G5 from a very benevolent professor, and am modding away (check my sig).

I went through every post well and good and know what I'm looking for, but eBay though in this surprise: Fancy Card?

Should I get it? I'm in the same AGP boat as everyone else.

Thanks!

NK

AT best you would get vga ou of that, and only if it has 4 RAM chips on front. if it has 8 on front it is a lost cause.

stick with cards that are reported working

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=380195357541

or one of the 256 meg 6800gt cards...much cheaper

or get a G70 7800gs

Thanks for the swift reply. Do excuse my ignorance, but why would it have DVI output if it can't do it? I also found This which I think is the same card:)confused:, the RAM in not sinked)...

Thanks

NK
